Digvijaya Singh blasts RSS for ‘sanghi terror’

New Delhi, January 29: Mocking the BJP’s Ekta Yatra , Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh on Friday said the saffron party should instead ask the RSS to hoist the national flag at its headquarters in Nagpur.

He said the real intention of the party in hoisting the Tricolour is to stoke trouble in disturbed areas under the garb of patriotism.

Singh also came down hard on the Sangh Parivar and even coined a new term for Hindutva terror. He said the bomb blasts at Malegaon, Mecca Masjid and Ajmer should be cited as instances of ” sanghi” terrorism.

London, January 29: Singer Katy Perry has admitted she doesn’t like to go on a diet plan.

The “Firework” singer is currently on a strict eating regime in preparation for her album “Teenage Dreams Tour”, but revealed that she occasionally lets herself have “cheat days” where she allows herself a burger, femalefirst.co.uk reports.

Dhaka artiste sings non-stop for 5 hours

Dhaka, January 29: Renowned Bangladeshi exponent of Hindustani classical music Dada Tapan Kanti Baidya has sung non-stop for five hours, hoping to set a world record.

At the solo musical soiree last Wednesday, Baidya performed well past midnight to the accompaniment of seveal instrumentalists – Tapan Sarkar (pakhawaj); Devbrata Chowdhury and Dilip Chakroborty (tabla); Dilruba Aktar, Mozaffor Hossain, Tapasi Ghosh and Prodip Sarkar (tanpura) and Mintu Krishna Paul, Mohammad Sakur and Shantanu (harmonium).

Farmer immolates self to protest land acquisition

Lucknow, January 29: A farmer in Uttar Pradesh’s Mahoba district set himself on fire, protesting the acquisition of his agricultural land for an irrigation project and demanding higher compensation for the same, officials said on Saturday.

Babbu Kushwaha, a resident of Jhir village, set himself ablaze on Friday and was rushed to the Jhansi Medical College. He succumbed to his burn injuries Saturday.

Protests continue in central Cairo

Cairo, January 29: Protest demonstrations continued Saturday in central Cairo after the government-ordered overnight curfew expired, with the military taking charge of security after Friday’s violence.

While the atmosphere was still described as tense, the streets were calm as the Egyptian military were seen taking a non-aggressive posture as they kept watch, eyewitnesses said.

The riot police – who had borne the brunt in the violent clashes the day before – had been consigned to side streets, away from the main Tahir Square.

CBI files chargesheet in Adarsh case

9-year-old girl raped

Azamgarh, January 29: A nine-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a teenager in Kotwali area, police sources said here today.

The girl was forcibly dragged into a field by one Pawan Chauhan (16) in Hafizpur village last evening, they said adding the incident occurred when the victim was on her way to attend a house warming function.

Chauhan was later caught by local residents and was handed over to the police, they said, adding the girl, who hails from Bihar, was initially admitted to the district hospital from where she was referred to Varanasi in a serious condition.

College security supervisor booked for molesting student

Mohali (Punjab), January 29: The security supervisor of a law college here has been booked for molesting a first year student, police said Saturday.

Amandeep Singh, in his late 30s, is the security supervisor of Army Institute of Law. The victim, a resident of Gurgaon, was staying at the college’s hostel.

“The girl says she had gone to a beauty parlour on Jan 23. She came back at 8 p.m., missing the 7.30 p.m. deadline to enter the hostel,” police officer Harbans Lal told IANS.

Nine killed in Kabul attack

Kabul, January 29: A suicide bomber blew himself up inside a Western-style grocery store on Friday in Kabul, killing at least nine people in what was the deadliest attack in the capital against a location frequented by foreigners in just over a year.

Three foreign women and one child, whose nationality was not known, were among the dead, Kabul police chief Mohammad Ayub Salangi told reporters at the scene. Six others were wounded, including two who suffered critical injuries, he said.

The Taleban claimed responsibility, saying the attack was against a US-based security contractor.

18 acquitted in Kandhamal riot cases

Bhubaneswar, January 29: A fast track court in Orissa acquitted 18 people in two cases of rioting in the Kandhamal district in 2008, a lawyer said on Saturday.

While 10 people were booked for burning the house of Sramika Digal, eight people were booked for torching John Nayak’s house. Both the incidents took place at Pipudidei village Aug 26.

Judge Sobhan Kumar Das delivered the verdict Friday in both the cases at the district headquarters of Phulbani, some 200 km from here, defence lawyer Ajit Patnaik told a news agency.

KU students boycott PG exams

Hyderabad, January 29: Demanding introduction of Telangana Bill, thousands of students from city PG colleges and university campus came out on the road after boycotting their PG exams on Friday.

Due to mass boycott, only 5.68 per cent of students i.e. 864 students out of 15,206 registered students appeared on the first day of KU PG first semester exam.

The PG third semester is scheduled on Saturday.
