Three die of gas leak in Uttar Pradesh

Hardoi, January 29: Three people, including a woman, died and two others were hospitalised following a gas leak at a chemical factory here, an official said Saturday.

The gas leakage from Amit Hetro Chem factory in Sandila town is believed to have taken place early Saturday.

‘All the three, who died following the gas leakage, were sleeping in a flour mill situated a few metres away from the factory,’ Hardoi District Magistrate Awadhesh Kumar Singh Rathore told IANS.

Ajmer Dargah blast probe heading in positive direction: Min

Jaipur, January 29: The state Anti-Terrorist Squad’s investigation in the Ajmer Dargah blast case is heading in a “very positive direction”, Rajasthan Home Minister Shanti Dhariwal said on Saturday.

“Investigation by ATS in the Ajmer Dargah bomb blast case has so far been successful and the present investigation is also heading in positive direction,” Dhariwal told reporters on the sidelines of a function.

However, he did not divulge any fresh details about the case.

The ATS is currently interrogating the key accused Aseemanand here.

Two drug peddlers held with heroin worth over Rs.1 crore

Ghazipur, January 29: Two inter-state drug peddlers have been arrested here with heroin worth over Rs.1 crore, police said Saturday.

The two men, in their late 20s and natives of Uttar Pradesh, were nabbed Friday night from Tulsipur area following a joint operation by the special operation group (SOG) and district police. Heroin weighing 1.25 kg was recovered.

“Acting on a tip-off, we intercepted the two youths who were on their way to hand over the consignment to some of their clients,” Inspector D.P. Singh told reporters in Ghazipur, some 300 km from Lucknow.

DSP hurt in stone-pelting; T-activists caned at CM’S meet

Kondamallepalli (Nalgonda), January 29: The Devarakonda DSP, Mr Mohammad Ali, was injured grievously when the Telangana activists hurled stones at the Rachchabanda programme in Nalgonda district where the Chief Minister, Mr N Kiran Kumar Reddy, participated. The programme was concluded within two minutes. The police shifted the DSP to the local hospital.

Yerran asks CM to fill information commissioner posts

Hyderabad, January 29: The Telugu Desam party senior leader and former Union minister, Mr K. Yerrannaidu, has asked the Chief Minister, Mr N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, to immediately fill the posts of Information Commissioners which were lying vacant. In a letter addressed to the Chief Minister, Mr Naidu pointed out that though under the Right to Information Act, a maximum number 10 Information Commissioners could be appointed, not a single post was filled by him as the chairman.

Police prosecutors test on Feb. 20

Hyderabad, January 29: The Chairman, State Level Police Recruitment Board, Hyderabad, in a pressnote has stated that the written examination for the recruitment to the posts of Additional Public Prosecutors Grade II and Assistant Public Prosecutors in Andhra Pradesh State Prosecution Service mentioned in the notification dated 12-11-2010 will be held on February 20.

The chairman asked the eligible candidates to contact the DIG/IG of the respective ranges on February 14 and 15 in case of not receiving Hall Tickets i.e., Identity Card (Candidate copy) on or before February 11.

Suicide bomber kills Kandahar deputy governor

Kandahar, January 29: A suicide bomber on a motorcycle killed the deputy governor of Afghanistan’s southern Kandahar province and wounded at least five others on Saturday, officials said.

Violence in Afghanistan is at its worst since US-backed Afghan forces overthrew the Taliban in late 2001 with casualties on all sides at record levels.

Deputy Governor Abdul Latif Ashna was killed as he left his home in Kandahar city, capital of Kandahar province, to go to work, the Governor’s spokesman Zalmay Ayoubi said. The civilians wounded in the blast had been taken to hospital, he added.

Farmer immolates self to protest land acquisition

Lucknow, January 29: A farmer in Uttar Pradesh’s Mahoba district set himself on fire, protesting the acquisition of his agricultural land for an irrigation project and demanding higher compensation for the same, officials said Saturday.

Babbu Kushwaha, a resident of Jhir village, set himself ablaze Friday and was rushed to the Jhansi Medical College. He succumbed to his burn injuries Saturday.

31 AP girls get Fair & Lovely scholarships

Hyderabad, January 29: The number of students awarded the Fair & Lovely Foundation Scholarship in 2010 has gone up to 212 from 183 last year. Among these girls, 31 belong to Andhra Pradesh. These 31 girls got scholarships competing with three lakh applications Fair & Lovely received from all over India. Out of thousands of applications received across the country for Fair and Lovely scholarship, Andhra Pradesh contributed to more than 30 per cent applications with the balance 70 per cent coming from over 23 States from India.

One held for stealing ATM card & drawing Rs 6 Lakh

Hyderabad, January 29: A man, who had stolen ATM card of Mr C.P. Jaiswal, DGM Accounts in Sirpur Paper Mill in Adilabad district and drawn around Rs 6 lakhs from ATM centers of different banks in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra, was arrested in Hyderabad while he came here along with his accomplice to commit the offence.

Japan girl wins ITF women championship in Kolkata

Kolkata, January 29: Second seed Mari Tanka ranked 460 in the WTA rankings of Japan upset the top seed Dalila Jakuoppovic of Slovenia ranked 394 in the finals of the 10,000 US dollars ITF Women’s Tournament at Jaidip Mukerjea Tennis Academy today.

The match was a close affair and the Japanese won 6-4 6-3, which lasted 90 minutes, Tanaka led 5-0 in the first set after wich Jakuoppovic pulled up to 5-4 but could not win the set. In the 2nd set also Tanaka had an early break and finally won 6-4 6-3. It was a very hard hitting match from the base line and the crowd appriciated it very much.

Lahore shooting: US asks Pakistan to intervene

Islamabad, January 29 : The US has asked Pakistan to intervene in the Lahore shooting case in which a US consulate official fatally shot two men who allegedly tried to rob him. The Pakistan Army chief has told the interior minister to handle the case with ‘extreme care’.

Davis Raymond, an employee of the US consulate in Lahore who has been arrested, shot dead two youths while a third was crushed under a vehicle immediately afterwards Thursday.

Philippines catches fake nuns going to Lebanon

Manila, January 29: Six women were detained at Manila airport after being caught trying to sneak into Lebanon dressed as nuns in a bid to get around a travel ban to the country, according to the immigration bureau.

The women on Saturday were pretending to be on their way to Hong Kong for a religious seminar but their unusual dress and behaviour alerted officials.

Under questioning they eventually admitted they were actually on their way to Lebanon to work as domestic helpers.

Two women murdered in city

Hyderabad, January 29: Bodies of two women were found in separate places in the capital city on Friday. Police who recovered the bodies have concluded that both were murdered for various reasons.

Police found the charred body of a woman behind the Kabbadi court behind the Thallagadda burial ground. The body was identified as that of Rajvi of Markandeyanagar.

The police have recovered the body and started investigation to trace the culprits and motive for the crime.

Moily flays BJP govt; seeks CBI probe into church attacks

Bangalore, January 29: Union Law Minister M Veerappa Moily today accused the BJP government of having “hijacked” the judicial commission that gave a clean chit to the party and Sangh parivar outfits for attacks on churches in Karnataka in 2008 and said a CBI probe should be ordered into the case.

“Ruling BJP has hijacked the commission and had failed to protect minority Christians in the state,” Moily said over the findings of B K Somashekara Commission of Inquiry.

Srinagar, January 29: Terming as “illegal and unconstitutional” the actions of J-K authorities to prevent it from hoisting the tricolour at Srinagar”s Lal Chowk, the BJP today said it would file cases against the state government and move a breach of privilege motion in the assembly. “BJP will file cases against the Omar Government for disrespecting the national flag in Kashmir, torturing workers, denying permission to MLAs to fly to Kashmir and also our right to hoist the tricolour in Kashmir,” BJP state president Shamsher Singh Manhas told reporters here.

CBI FIR Names Ashok Chavan

Mumabi, January 29: The CBI today registered a case against some retired Army officials and bureaucrats of Maharashtra government in connection with the Adarsh housing society scam.

The case was registered after the CBI last week received flak from the Bombay High Court for its tardy probe in the case.

According to sources, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan figures in the FIR registered at the special designated court in Mumbai.

The CBI FIR names former Major General M M Wanchoo besides R C Thakur and Kaniah Lal Gidwani as main conspirators.

HC throws out ‘frivolous’ petition against SRK

Mumbai, January 29: The Bombay High Court today dismissed a PIL against Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan for alleged violation of construction norms as “frivolous” and imposed a cost on the petitioner for wasting its time.

Activist Simpreet Singh had filed a PIL against the actor alleging that a building, an extension of his bungalow ‘Mannat’, a heritage property, had been constructed in gross violation of Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) and other rules.
