Pakistan facing multiple crisis: Ahmed Rashid

New Delhi, January 30: Well known Pakistani author Ahmed Rashid has said the country is going through a series of ”multiple crisis” that have all come together.

”There is an economic crisis, which is of an enormous magnitude now and there is a global crisis that is going to be a part of that. There will also be a very serious domestic economic crisis,” Mr Rashid said in an interview to a TV news channel.

Thousands march against corruption in Pune, Aurangabad

Mumbai, January 30: Marking the 63rd death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, thousands of people participated in a protest march against corruption in Pune and Aurangabad Sunday, an official said.

The march, that is taking place simultaneously in 60 cities across India, is part of an anti-graft campaign by civil society groups.

“In Pune, we have made it a ‘politics-free’ rally. All participants are volunteers from various fields and there is no celebrity participation,” said a volunteer.

Muslims equally involved in Telangana movement

Obama for true global partnership with India

Washington, Janaury 30: US President Barack Obama has reaffirmed his commitment to building a “true global, strategic partnership” with India at a meeting with National Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon.

Obama dropped in as Menon was meeting with his American counterpart Tom Donilon at the White House on Friday and stayed on for about 15 minutes reflecting his focus on strengthening the India-US relationship.

‘No call for OPEC extraordinary meeting’

Tehran, January 30: Tehran’s OPEC Governor Mohammad Ali Khatibi says there is no need for an extraordinary meeting despite the hike in global oil prices.

“As far as I know there has been no call for any extraordinary meeting for the time being,” Khatibi said in a telephone interview with Reuters on Saturday.

Holding OPEC’s rotating presidency this year, the Iranian Oil Ministry would be required to call for an extraordinary meeting before the planned June date if needed.

Iran arrests 20 over Chabahar attack

Tehran, January 30: Iranian security forces have detained 20 suspects in connection with a bloody terrorist attack in Iran’s eastern Sistan-Baluchestan Province, a senior Iranian judicial official says.

“The public and revolutionary prosecutor’s office of Zahedan demanded the execution of four of the perpetrators behind the Chabahar terrorist attack,” IRIB quoted Mohammad Marzieh, the prosecutor of Zahedan, as saying late on Saturday.

Nation pays homage to Mahatma Gandhi on Martyrs’ Day

New Delhi, January 30: India Sunday paid homage to the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi with prayer meetings and floral tributes on his 63rd death anniversary observed as Martyrs’ Day.

It was on Jan 30, 1948 that Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated here.

The day commenced with 2-minute’s silence at 11 a.m., followed by prayer meetings at the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

Hundreds of students chanted devotional songs at the prayer meeting organised by the Rajghat Samadhi Committee in the capital.

Iran, Armenia agree on pipeline building

Tehran, January 30:Iranian Oil Minister Massoud Mirkazemi says Tehran and Yerevan have agreed to construct a pipeline to transfer Iranian oil products to Armenia.

Mirkazemi made the remarks on the sidelines of a meeting with visiting Armenian Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Armen Movsisyan on Saturday, Iran oil ministry’s official website Shana reported.

The Iranian minister said the pipeline will begin from the northwestern city of Tabriz and stretch toward the Armenian border, noting that it can help Armenia meet parts of its needs for oil products from the Islamic Republic.

Thousands rally in support of Egyptians

Cairo, January 30: Thousands of people across the world have taken to the streets to express support for the anti-government demonstrations in Egypt as Egyptians continue the uprising in the country.

As the popular uprising against the government of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is continuing, demonstrations in Lebanon, Syria, Turkey, Germany, France and the United States showed that they’re fully behind the Egyptian uprising.

Similar demonstrations were also held in Jordan, Greece and other countries around the world.

Zero tolerance for domestic violence and sexual misconduct

New Delhi, January 30: In a sign that the Ministry of External Affairs is finally getting tough on sexual offenders within its ranks, Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao has issued a stern statement warning potential offenders of serious consequences.

Rao has written to all the heads of missions saying, “The Ministry will deal with incidents of sexual misconduct and domestic violence with zero tolerance and will take punitive measures against offending officials.”

Exiled leader to return to Tunisia Sunday

Tunis, January 30: Leader of Tunisia’s main Islamic party Rachid Ghannouchi is due to return to his homeland from Britain on Sunday after more than 20 years in exile.

Ghannouchi, who had received a life sentence from the Tunisian old regime for plotting against the state, can now return without any hindrance following the ouster of the country’s authoritarian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

Ben Ali and his family fled to Saudi Arabia on January 14 after days of street protests put an end to his more than two-decade rule.

Fire in Punjab and Haryana High Court

Chandigarh, January 30: A fire broke out in the old record room of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today but there were no reported casualties, fire brigade officials said here.

Five fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the blaze, which was brought under control after a few hours, they said.

The cause of the fire and the amount of loss is being ascertained, they added.

It is the need of the hour that every organistion and sincere persons come forward to settle household disputes, differences between spouses, inheritance tussles, dealing affairs and other issues, as the society is marred with these issues.

Therefore it is the need of the hour to strive for resolving those issues.

The effort to eliminate difference between the parties in the light of Quranic injuctions and sayings of the prophet (PBUH) is needed.

Russia identifies airport bomber as Caucasus man

Moscow, January 30: The suicide bomber who killed 35 people at Moscow’s busiest airport was deliberately targeting foreigners, investigators said on Saturday, which would mark an ominous new tactic by separatist militants in southern Russia if he was recruited by an Islamist terror cell.

Federal investigators know the identity of the bomber, a 20-year-old native of the volatile Caucausus region, where Islamist insurgents have been battling for years for a breakaway state.

German train collision kills 10

Magdeburg, January 30: At least 10 people have been killed and 43 others wounded in a train collision near the city of Magdeburg in eastern Germany, authorities say.

A local passenger train and a goods train collided head-on in the state of Saxony-Anhalt near the city of Magdeburg late on Saturday.

The cause of the crash is still unclear. Some 18 injured passengers are in critical condition. The wreckage caught fire after the collision.

The passenger train, the HarzElbeExpress, was travelling between Magdeburg and Halberstadt.
