Honey becomes dearer as production declines

Rajhmundary, January 30: With hundreds of beehives getting damaged during the recent rains and cyclone, honey has become scarce in the state. The shortage of ‘rock bee honey’ (raw honey) is also driving up the price with the price per kilogram now being Rs 500 up from Rs 250 earlier.

JM Lyngdoh in Hyderabad march against corruption

Hyderabad, January 30: Hundreds of citizens and youth, among them former chief election commissioner J.M. Lyngdoh, joined hands to march against corruption here Sunday as part of a nationwide anti-graft campaign by civil society groups.

The participants marched along Necklace Road on the banks of Hussain Sagar lake in the heart of Hyderabad. Led by Lyngdoh, activists of Youth for Better India carried banners and placards with anti-corruption slogans like “Bring the Lokpal Bill”.

Petition for disclosure of Srikrishna report

Hyderabad, January 30: Justice L Narasimha Reddy of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on Saturday took on file a writ petition filed by former Congress MP Narayan Reddy seeking public disclosure of parts of the Srikrishna Committee report.

The judge asked the assistant solicitor general Poonam Ashok Kumar to request the Attorney General to assist the court in the matter in view of the far-reaching

constitutional issues.

The petitioner stated that according to information, the Srikrishna Committee had appended to its report, a note on the law and order and internal security in the state.

India among most corrupt countries, says Advani

New Delhi, January 30:Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader L.K. Advani Sunday said India had slipped three points to the 87th spot in worldwide transparency and corruption index. He attributed the fall to alleged corrupt practices in the 2010 Commonwealth Games (CWG).

4 Suri murder suspects held, Bhanu remains free

Hyderabad, January 30: The Hyderabad police on Saturday paraded four men who allegedly had a hand in the murder of Anantapur factionist Maddelacheruvu Suri but said the main suspect, Mallishetty Bhanu Kiran, was still on the lam. Also, police chief A K Khan said the motive behind the murder continued to elude his detectives.

Almost a month after Suri was shot dead in the heart of the city, investigators have only managed to gather information on 100 benami properties allegedly acquired by Suri. These properties have now been frozen.

Rachabandha: Officials greeted with stones, eggs

Hyderabad, January 30: For the fifth consecutive day today, Rachabanda programme was obstructed by Telangana activists across the T-region.

The programme turned into a battle zone at Gudur in Kamalapurmandal and Peddapalli. TRS activists hurled stones, tomatoes and eggs at the officials while the police chased the agitators away.

Knowing about the incident, a large number of villagers came to the venue and chased away the police and officials.

TRS activists stalled the Rachabanda programme at Gurajala, Upparapalli and other villages in Warangal district.

‘Tying monitors to Indian students unwarranted’

Hyderabad, January 30: It took the tying of radio trackers — described by critics as cattle tags — to the ankles of Indian students enrolled at Tri-Valley University (TVU) in California for the Indian government to spring to their defence, four days after US federal investigators found that it was a sham university engaged in immigration fraud.

Several Indian students detained this week for questioning as part of the investigation of TVU were released but made to wear the tracking devices, according to students Express spoke to on the phone.

Special trains to Ajmer from Hyderabad

Hyderabad, January 30: In order to clear extra rush of passenger traffic, the South Central Railway will run 16 weekly special trains between Hyderabad and Ajmer during February and March.

Hyderabad-Ajmer weekly special train will depart from Hyderabad at 21.35 hrs on February 4,11,18,25 and March 4,11,18 and 25 (Fridays) and arrive in Ajmer at 14.30 hrs on Sundays. In the return direction, the train will depart from Ajmer at 22.45 hrs on February 6,13,20 and 27 and March 6,13,20 and 27 (Sundays) and arrive in Hyderabad at 14.00 hrs on Tuesdays.

No change in EAMCET syllabus this year

Hyderabad, January 30: With the Eamcet-2011 scheduled for May 8, the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) vice-chancellor DN Reddy has written a letter to the education department to give an exemption in the eligibility criteria for engineering courses.

As per the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) norms, a minimum of 50 percent score in (mathematics, physics and chemistry) in the Intermediate exams is essential for eligibility to engineering courses.

Washington, January 30: A US pastor banned from entering Britain is to send his son as his representative to deliver his words to the audience there following a Home Secretary decision that he ‘is not conducive to the public good’.

‘Dozens of bodies’ found in Cairo

Cairo, January 30: Dozens of bodies have reportedly been found on a road near a prison in eastern Cairo as Egypt faces mass anti-government protests.

“Dozens of bodies were seen lying on a road near Cairo’s Abu Zaabal prison,” an Egyptian security source told AFP on Sunday without further explanation.

The report came as heavy gunfire was heard overnight at the prison after a group of detainees fled the detention center.

‘US’ weapons witnessed in Egypt

Cairo, January 30: A lot of anger has shifted to international influences in Egypt as protesters witness “made in USA” labels on the weapons used against them, says Media correspondent.

Jihan Hafiz told Media that in Egypt “the police used excessive force to disperse protesters” as over one hundred people have already lost their lives in the past days.

Andhra minister gets threat call, cops detect detonators

Hyderabad, January 30: A day after a minister in Andhra Pradesh received threat calls, police Sunday seized three detonators from Mahabubnagar district.

The devices were seized on Izza-Gawal Road in the district, where Information and Public Relations Minister D.K. Aruna was to participate Monday in the “Racchabanda” programme launched by the government to redress public grievances on the spot.

The recovery was made after an anonymous caller told the minister Saturday that she would be targeted.

Egypt bans Al-Jazeera channel as protests escalate

Moscow, January 30: The Egyptian authorities have imposed a ban on the work of the Arabic TV channel Al-Jazeera in Egypt amid escalating anti-government protests in the north African country, Egypt’s state television announced on Sunday.

According to the announcement, the accreditations of Al-Jazeera journalists in Egypt have been annulled and the TV channel’s access to satellite communication has been closed.

Al-Jazeera was a major news source for Egyptians, as it had the largest ramified network of correspondents across Egypt.

Egypt military moves into Sharm el-Sheikh

Cairo, January 30: The Egyptian military moved into the Sinai resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh Sunday in an effort to control unrest in the tourist areas, while Cairo airport was flooded with foreigners trying to leave the country in a hurry.

The US embassy in Cairo has advised US citizens to leave the country as soon as possible owing to the unrest, according to broadcaster al-Arabiya.

Saudi Arabia and Turkey said they were sending planes to evacuate their citizens from Egypt.

School kid booked for blasphemy in Karachi

Karachi, January 30: A schoolboy has been arrested and slapped with charges of blasphemy here for writing derogatory remarks on his answer sheets against the Prophet, a media report stated Sunday.

The case has been filed at the Shahrah-e-Noor Jahan police station against Muhammad Samiullah, an intermediate student.

He was arrested on Jan 28, 2011 on the complaint of chief controller intermediate board, who alleged him for writing derogatory remarks in his answer sheets against Holy Prophet Muhammad, reported the Daily Times.

Special plane to bring back Indians from Egypt

New Delhi, January 30: India is sending a special commercial flight Sunday to bring back Indians wanting to return home from Egypt that is in the middle of a political upheaval.

An Air India flight with a capacity to carry 300-odd passengers is being sent to Cairo to enable Indians living in or visiting Egypt to return to India if they desired so, government sources said here.

Some of the 3,600-odd Indians, who live in Egypt that is facing political unrest at present, have expressed their interest in returning home and the flight is arranged based on their request, the source said.

New Delhi, January 30:Actor Arshad Warsi is all praises for actor Ronit Roy, who won best supporting actor Filmfare Award, for which he too was nominated.

“I lost the award to a very competent actor and I am truly happy for Ronit Roy,” Arshad wrote on microblogging site Twitter.

While Arshad was nominated in the best supporting actor category for “Ishqiya”, Ronit walked away with the stauette, nicknamed Black Lady, for his performance in “Udaan”.
