Tehran, December 30: Amid reports about the suspected death of Iranian prisoner Ali-Reza Asgari in an Israeli prison, an Iranian lawmaker says the United Nations and the Israeli regime should be held accountable on the case.

“The UN and Zionist regime (Israel) are responsible for the life of Mr. Asgari, the former deputy defense minister of our country, in prisons of the regime,” Mohammad Karim Abedi told IRNA on Wednesday.

Why unsafe Delhi schools not demolished, asks rights body

New Delhi, December 30: The Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR) has issued a notice to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), asking why there is a delay in demolition of 35 MCD school buildings that have been declared unsafe.

This, the commission said, was a violation of the Right to Education (RTE) Act. The DCPCR is responsible for monitoring the implementation of the RTE Act in Delhi.

Srikrishna report on Telangana to be made public Jan 6

Hyderabad, December 30: The B.N. Srikrishna Committee report on Telangana has been submitted to the home ministry and would be made public Jan 6, union Home Minister P. Chidambaram said Thursday.

Justice B.N. Srikrishna, the retired Supreme Court judge who headed the panel to look look into the demands for separate statehood to Telangana, handed over the report to Chidambaram in his chamber at North Block at about 3 p.m.

Israel’s ex-president convicted of rape

Jerusalem, December 30: Former Israeli President Moshe Katsav has been found guilty of raping and sexually abusing several women during the time he was holding office.

The Tel Aviv district court on Thursday convicted Katsav on two counts of rape and other sex abuse charges, declaring that the ex-president’s version of events was “riddled with lies.”

The verdict was handed down more than four years after complaints surfaced severe sexual offenses against his employees, Israeli daily Ha’aretz reported.

Musharraf rejects Bhutto terror role

Karachi, December 30: Pakistan’s ex-President Pervez Musharraf denies responsibility for the assassination of former Premier Benazir Bhutto, insisting he will not appear before an inquiry commission probing the terror effort.

“It was not my responsibility to provide security to Benazir Bhutto; who told her to come out of the roof top of her vehicle?” Musharraf said in an interview with a local TV channel late Wednesday.

He said that the president was not supposed to provide security for anyone.

Mastermind behind Rs.300 crore Citibank fraud held

Gurgaon, December 30: Citibank manager Shivraj Puri, accused of cheating investors of Rs.300 crore, surrendered before police and was taken into custody Thursday, almost two days after one of India’s biggest banking frauds earlier estimated to be worth Rs.100 crore came to light, officials said.

“Puri surrendered at around 12.30 p.m. He has been taken into custody and will be presented before the court later in the day,” Gurgaon Police Commissioner S.S. Deswal told reporters. He said that more arrests could be made after Puri’s interrogation.

RAIN LASHES JEDDAH

Jeddah, December 30: Heavy rain lashed Jeddah Wednesday flooding main roads and causing traffic chaos. Saudi Arabian Airlines (SAA) also announced that it has stopped all flights at King Abdul Aziz International Airport until the weather improves.

Sehwag ruled out of ODI series against SA

Cape Town, December 30: In a major jolt to the Indian team preparing for the ODI series against South Africa after the last Test is over, star opener Virender Sehwag was virtually ruled out of the 50-over series owing to injury problems.
