20 robbers loot cash from train

Ghaziabad, November 02: About 20 robbers looted cash and other articles from the Saptkranti Express train in Ghaziabad, police officials said Monday.

The incident occurred 3.30 p.m. over Hindon river.

The police said 15 to 20 robbers barged into the pantry car of the train, and robbed cash and other articles from the employees. They ransacked the coach and threw the utensils, vegetables and other articles out of the moving train and fled after pulling the chain. The train was going from New Delhi to Muzaffarpur in Bihar.

Sharjah to take part in World Travel Market expo

Sharjah, November 01: The Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) will participate in the World Travel Market (WTM) expo in London from Nov 8-11.

UAE lifts ban on birds’ imports from Gulf countries

Dubai, November 01: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has lifted a temporary ban on the imports of birds and their by-products from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.

Rashid Ahmed Bin Fahad, minister of Environment and Water, issued a resolution which stipulated that all such inbound shipments should be subjected to veterinary quarantine laws and regulations in the country.

Human trafficking network busted in Delhi

New Delhi, November 02: Delhi Police Monday said they have busted a major human trafficking ring with the arrest of a man who transported illegal immigrants from India to Mexico, Canada and the US through Guatemala.

“Adil Vali Mohammad, 38, was arrested Saturday when 31 passports, apart from his own, were confiscated from his possession at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport,” said a police official.

Mohammad, a computer graduate, hails from a lower-middle class family from Mumbai, the police official said.

Abu Dhabi invests $30 bn in new oil projects

Abu Dhabi, November 01: Abu Dhabi has invested over $30 billion in new oil projects to boost oil production to 3.5 million barrels per day by the end of this year.

The investments were made between March 2009 and March 2010, oil industry sources said.

They said that due to the expansion in oil projects, investment opportunities would considerably increase in Abu Dhabi.

‘Israel killed 250 fighters during war’

Jerusalem, November 02: Israel killed 250 Palestinian resistance fighters during its December 2008-January 2009 war on Gaza, says the Palestinian resistance movement, Hamas.

Hamas’ Interior Minister Fathi Hamad said on Monday that “Israel targeted police headquarters and 250 martyrs fell and they were affiliated to Hamas and other factions,” the Palestinian Ma’an news agency reported.

The all-out land, aerial and naval bombardments, codenamed Operation Cast Lead, claimed the lives of more than 1,400 Palestinians, including over 900 civilians.

3 die in Orissa accident

Bhubaneswar, November 02: At least three people were killed when a multi-utility vehicle carrying them collided with a parked truck in Orissa’s Bhadrak district Tuesday, police said.

Three people were injured in the accident that occurred on national highway-five at district headquarters town of Bhadrak, some 142 km from here.

The victims were returning to their home state Orissa from West Bengal. The dead include two women.

The injured have been taken to a nearby government hospital. Their condition is stated to be stable.

Israel mulls leasing Palestinian land

Tel Aviv, November 02: The Israeli regime is considering renting Palestinian land based on a US proposal that has reportedly vowed support for continued Israeli military presence on the territory.

The offer holds that Tel Aviv should lease the Jordan Valley, which houses some 47,000 Palestinians and its greater part falls within the occupied West Bank, AFP reported on Monday.

The proposal had reportedly suggested a seven-year lease. Meanwhile, an unnamed cabinet minister said, “Anything less than a 99-year lease is not worth talking about.”

Poll results would not affect Obama agenda on Asia trip: aide

Washington, November 02: The predicted rout of US President Barack Obama’s Democratic party in Tuesday’s Congressional poll would not affect his economic agenda on his Asia trip, starting with India, according to a top aide.

“I think regardless of the election results, the President is committed throughout this whole trip and including the negotiations over the free trade agreement (with South Korea) to doing what is right for expanding US exports and creating jobs here at home,” Deputy National Security Advisor Michael Froman told reporters Monday.

New Delhi, November 02: A light fog enveloped the capital Tuesday morning, indicating that winters are close by. The weather office predicted the same pattern for the next few days.

“The sky will remain clear but a mist and shallow fog will be there early morning. In the late evening, there will be no fog but mist, keeping the evening chill,” an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official said.

The minimum temperature Tuesday hovered around 16 degrees Celsius – average for this time of the season. The maximum is expected to hover around 29 degrees.

24,000 Chinese Haj pilgrims to visit Makkah in 2010

Beijing, November 02: Over 24,000 Chinese Muslims will visit Makkah in Saudi Arabia for the Haj pilgrimage this year, Xinhua reported Monday.

A total of 11,200 Chinese Muslims have already left for the holy city, the State Administration for Religious Affairs said.

Thirteen thousand more are expected to leave on 41 chartered flights from Beijing, Lanzhou, Urumqi, Yinchuan and Kunming cities, Yang Shuli of the China Islamic Institute said.

Islamic leaders, doctors and officials are accompanying each group of pilgrims. China has about 23 million Muslims.

‘Babri Demolition Culprits Must be Brought to Book’

New Delhi, November 02: Hailing the Allahabad High Court verdict in the Ayodhya title suits, a Muslim forum said that any amicable settlement should not let those responsible for the Babri Masjid demolition go scot-free.

Describing the verdict as “a practical and humane approach, respecting all views,” the forum We the citizens of Lucknow appealed for peace in a statement issued here.

“A large section of people, both the Hindus and the Muslims, feel that the judgement is one which could best be given in the current scenario,” the forum said.
