Woman commits suicide along with infant daughter

Lucknow, November 27: Under distress due to poverty, a woman along with her infant daughter allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a train in Khaga area here, police said today.

The unidentified woman, who lived in a makeshift tent in Vijay Nagar locality, jumped in front of the goods train along with her daughter at Khaga railway station.

Police said the woman has left two children behind, who will be sent to an orphanage.

Labourer buried alive

Jaipur, November 27: A labourer was buried alive when a portion of well in which he was doing some work collapsed in Sirohi district of Rajasthan, police said today.

The incident occurred last evening when two labourers were working inside the well and suddenly a portion collapsed on them.

26/11 probe delayed because of India: Rehman Malik

Islamabad, November 27: Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik Saturday said a delay in investigations into the 26/11 Mumbai attack has been caused because of a lukewarm response from India.

“We have asked India to share some information with us to help us proceed with the probe, but the requisite information has not reached us as yet,” Malik said during a visit to the Federal Investigative Agency (FIA) office in Islamabad.

Britain will need 2 mn new homes for immigrants

London, November 27: Britain will need more than two million new homes over the next 25 years to cope with immigration, a media report said Saturday.

Official figures released Friday showed that Britain will have to provide homes for 83,000 migrant families a year if the influx continues at the current rate, reports Daily Mail.

Over a third of all the new houses and flats made available between now and the mid-2030s will be needed for individuals and families coming to Britain from abroad, figures showed.

Book the guilty in 2G spectrum scam: Ratan Tata

New Delhi, November 27: Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata has urged the Indian government to investigate and book the people who are guilty in the 2G spectrum scam.

“I wish the government would take a stand, bring an auditor in the thing, have an investigation, book people who are guilty,” said Tata in an interview to NDTV news channel.

Suicide rate among US soldiers doubles

Washington, November 27: US National Guard soldiers returning home to face further difficulties.

Statistics have revealed that the suicide rate among non-active members of the US National Guard has almost doubled this year.

Nearly twice as many American soldiers, who are not on active duty, have committed suicide in 2010 as the number that took their own lives last year, while the suicide rate among active duty soldiers has not increased, USA TODAY reports.

Child abuse racket busted in Britain

London, November 27: Police in Britain have busted a racket in which a gang of paedophiles sexually abused at least 30 girls as young as five years, a media report said Saturday.

Though the Operation Lakeland was launched after suspicions were raised by one of the victim’s parents, and police managed to halt the ring’s activities when they arrested gang leader John Barrett in December 2007, reporting restrictions were only lifted Friday, the Daily Express reported.

Students protest in OU, burn CM’s effigy

Hyderabad, November 27: Students strongly protested in Osmania University and burned effigy of chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy.

Recently police had arrested several leaders of Joint Action Committee and registered serious cases against them in connection with the protest in the University on the issue of sub-inspector’s written examination. The leaders were shifted to Cherla pally Jail and they have not been released yet on bail. Demanding JAC leaders’ release students have been staging protest for the last few days and have also made representation to the government.

Dolly Bindra re-enters ‘Bigg Boss 4’

Mumbai, November 27: Loud-mouthed Dolly Bindra is back in “Bigg Boss 4”. The actress, who created havoc in the reality show with her vulgar verbal attacks on co-participants, made a re-entry Saturday morning.

Dolly was thrown out of the show along with actor Sameer Soni after they got embroiled in a heated discussion and were on the verge of hitting each other.

While Sameer made a re-entry Nov 22, Dolly has been called back on public demand to add spice to the show, according to channel sources.

Dolly’s entry, in a wooden box, will be shown on Monday’s episode.

Indian consulate opens in Jaffna

Jaffna, November 27: India opened its consulate in this Tamil heartland Saturday, with External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna using the occasion to call for national reconciliation in post-war Sri Lanka.

On the penultimate day of his four-day visit, Krishna inaugurated the Consulate General in Jaffna that will be headed by V. Mahalingam, a former head of the passport office in New Delhi.

Present on the occasion were Sri Lankan Foreign Minister G.L. Peiris, Indian Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao, a former Indian envoy to Sri Lanka, and some Sri Lankan MPs.

Teenager held for trying to detonate car bomb

Washington, November 27: The Federal Bureau of Investigation has arrested a teenage American national of Somali origin with suspected links to Pakistan-based terror outfits for allegedly trying to detonate a car bomb at an annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Portland, Oregon.

The arrest of Mohamed Osman Mohamud, 19, on Friday evening was the culmination of a long-term undercover operation during which he had been monitored closely for months as his alleged bomb plot developed.

He expressed surprise that the antiques in the museum had been collected by the personality whose language was Urdu but unfortunately his language has been neglected and the details have been written in English, Hindi and Telugu. Over 50 % Indians suffer from tooth problems

New Delhi, November 27: Over 50 percent of Indians suffer from tooth decay problems and nearly 77 percent have not visited the dentist in the past one year, a study revealed Saturday.

“Nearly 53 percent Indians suffer from common tooth problems such as bleeding gums, bad breath, sensitive teeth, receding gums and decayed teeth,” revealed a nation-wide study by AC Nielsen.

The study also showed that only 23 percent of Indian mothers are aware about the importance of taking children to the dentist at least once every six months.

Britain steps up security, fearing Mumbai-like attack

London, November 27: Gun-totting British policemen have been deployed in many shopping centres in Britain to combat the threat of a Mumbai-like massacre ahead of the Christmas holidays, a media report said Saturday.

Armed patrols have been stepped up to protect potential terrorist targets such as shopping centres. Among them are the Westfield mall in Shepherd’s Bush, West London, and Kent’s Bluewater complex, the Sun reported.

Andhra CM calls on PM, Sonia and other Cong leaders

New Delhi, November 27:Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi here today and discussed the Party affairs in the state and the formation of his Council of Ministers.

Mr Reddy, who arrived here this morning after taking over from Mr Rosaiah on Thursday, also met Home Minister P Chidambaram.

While sources said Mr Reddy discussed his state’s political matters, officials described it as ”customary” courtesy calls after taking over as the Chief Minister.

British family shares home with 80 animals

London, November 27: A British family shares its home with an amazing collection of 80 exotic animals that include boa constrictors, pythons and tarantula spiders.

Alan Hewitt, 44, and his wife Heather, 40, have 20 snakes, 15 reptiles, 25 mammals and birds and invertebrates as their pets at their home in in Morley, near Leeds, The Sun reported Saturday.

The couple run a sanctuary – the Morley Exotic Animal Rescue – for rescued pets and now have a collection comprising 35 different species.

Bomb plot at US Christmas lighting ceremony foiled

Washington, November 27: A Somalia-born US citizen was arrested as a plot to bomb a Christmas tree-lighting ceremony was foiled in Oregon, news reports from the northwestern US state said.

Mohamed Osman Mohamud, 19, was arrested moments before the ceremony took place Friday night in Portland, the US Attorney’s Office in Oregon said.

US judicial officials said Mohamud drove a van to the square where the lighting took place, believing he was going to detonate a bomb, but the explosives were dummies provided by Federal Bureau of Investigation agents.

30,000 Indian students have left Australia: Student federation

Thiruvananthapuram, November 27: A spate of attacks, tough visa norms and denial of permanent residency have caused around 30,000 Indian students, mostly based in Melbourne, to leave Australia in the past year, claims the Federation of Indian Students in Australia (FISA).

The figure is quoted in the latest issue of Indian Student, published from Melbourne, a copy of which is available with IANS. The magazine in its editorial says it appears Australia is no more a favourite destination for Indian students with this huge exodus in a year’s time.

London, November 27: Jessica Alba’s two-year-old daughter Honor loves to try out her mother’s clothes and jewellery, the star revealed.

“I just wear whatever is easy and matches somewhat. My daughter is normally in the wardrobe with me, pulling all my shoes out, trying on the jewellery,” contactmusic.com quoted Alba as saying.

WikiLeaks release may harm ties with India, says US

New York, November 27: The US has alerted India on an upcoming publication of classified documents by online whistleblower WikiLeaks, which it says may harm American interests and create tension with its “friends”.

“We have reached out to India to warn them about a possible release of documents,” State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said.

“We do not know precisely what WikiLeaks has or what it plans to do. We have made our position clear. These documents should not be released,” Crowley said.

It is not known what the documents are about, or whether India is mentioned.

No work, no pay

New Delhi, November 27: As the war of nerves in Parliament on whether ‘to have or not to have’ a JPC on the 2G-Raja spectrum scam continues, the Congress MPs decided to shame the Opposition by forgoing their daily allowance as no work is taking place following disruptions.

The winter session of Parliament failed to transact any substantive business for the 11th eleventh day on Friday. When the session is on, a fully functioning Parliament approximately costs the taxpayer a whopping Rs 7 crore a day.
