Ketan Desai’s election to university body challenged

Gandhinagar, November 29: The election of Ketan Desai, tainted former chief of the Medical Council of India (MCI), to the Gujarat University senate was Monday challenged in the Gujarat High Court.

Desai, facing a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe for corruption, was elected unopposed to the senate recently on the seat reserved for faculty of medicine.

The petition challenging his election was filed by Raghuvir Gadhiya, former senate member of the Gujarat University, through his lawyer Hitesh Dave.

Gold declines as stronger dollar reduces demand

London, November 29: Gold today fell USD 3.19 to USD 1,360.65 an ounce after the dollar rebounded against the euro, curbing demand for the metal as an alternative investment.

The dollar traded near a two-month high against the euro as European governments handed Ireland an USD 113 billion aid package.

The US currency has gained as concern that military action on the Korean peninsula will escalate boosted demand for the dollar as a refuge.

Lucknow, November 29: Denying that she was trying to ape her Bihar counterpart Nitish Kumar, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati asserted Monday that providing good governance was her goal right from day one.

“It is absolutely wrong to assume that taking the cue from Nitish Kumar, I have suddenly started devoting attention to issues related to good governance,” Mayawati told a hastily convened press conference here.

Fake faith healer held for raping seven girls

Mumbai, November 29: A fake faith healer, who allegedly raped seven girls after promising their mothers health, wealth and prosperity by his actions, has been arrested and was Monday remanded to police custody by a court here.

Mehndi Kasim Sheikh, 36, alias Baba Bengali, had raped the seven girls during different periods, allegedly with the consent of their mothers, after assuring that they would be blessed with happiness and prosperity, public prosecutor Satish Patil told the court.

Israel appoints new head of Mossad

Jerusalem, November 29: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has decided to appoint Tamir Pardo as head of the Mossad intelligence agency, replacing Meir Dagan, who steps down after eight years in the post.

A statement issued by Netanyahu’s office praised Pardo as “the right person to lead the Mossad in the coming years in light of the complex challenges facing the state of Israel”.

Pardo is a long-time Mossad official, and recently served as Dagan’s deputy, after holding senior and operational positions.

Sedition case registered against Arundhati, Geelani

New Delhi, November 29: Writer Arundhati Roy, Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani and others were today booked on charges of sedition by Delhi Police for their “anti-India” speech at a seminar here last month.

The filing of the FIR came following a directive from a local court on Saturday on a petition filed by Sushil Pandit who alleged that Geelani and Roy made anti-India speeches at a conference on “Azadi-the Only Way” on October 21, a senior police official said.

Abhishek Singhvi reinstated as Congress spokesman

New Delhi, November 29: Abhishek Singhvi has been reinstated as a Congress spokesperson after a gap of over one and half month since the party took him off as its public face following a controversy over his appearance in a lottery case in Kerala High Court.

AICC general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said “he (Singhvi) has told the party leadership that it was an error of judgement on his part. He has now been called back as party spokesperson. He will hold a press conference tomorrow.”

In the first week of October, Singhvi was barred from holding media briefings.

Religious leader Nityananda, aides charged with rape

Bangalore, November 29: Police in Karnataka have filed a chargesheet against controversial religious leader Nityananda and four associates for rape and unnatural sex.

The associates are Nithya Bhaktananda, Nithya Sachidananda, Nithya Sadananda and Maa Sachidananda alias Ragini, the Crime Investigation Department said in a statement here Monday.

The statement said the 430-page chargesheet was filed in a court in Ramanagara, near Bangalore, on Nov 27.

Nityananda, hailing from Tamil Nadu, has a sprawling ashram in Ramanagara district’s Bidadi area, about 30 km from Bangalore.

Jagan not to destabilise Andhra Pradesh govt : Cong MLAs

Hyderabad, November 29: Congress leaders and MLAs close to Jaganmohan Reddy, who resigned from the Lok Sabha and announced his decision to quit the party, today said the former Kadapa MP has no intention to destabilise the Andhra Pradesh government as it was formed by his father YSR Reddy.

Congress MLAs P Srikanth Reddy, Konda Surekha and Jagan’s close confidante Ambati Rambabu told reporters that the former Kadapa MP has asked MLAs not to quit their posts.

“Jagan has told MLAs not to resign. The MLAs are not quitting”, Srikanth Reddy, MLA from Kadapa district said.

Panaji, November 29: Indian actress Freida Pinto, who made it to Hollywood after the Oscar winning “Slumdog Millionaire”, says women are not treated like dolls in Bollywood and she is certainly game for a Hindi movie if a good one comes along.

“Women are not treated like dolls in Bollywood,” Freida said addressing a press conference on the sidelines of the 41st International Film Festival of India (IFFI), where her film “You Will Meet a Tall, Dark Stranger” directed by Woody Allen, is being screened.

Freida also accused the media of sensationalising her comments on Bollywood.

Gambling racket busted, 17 held

Hyderabad, November 29: Task force police arrested 17 men for carrying out a gambling business at farm house and recovered Rs. 42 thousand cash.
As per the tip-off from the police on learning about a gambling business South Zone task force inspector Mr. Srinivas along with his team including sub inspector Sheikh Haseeb Ullah raided a farm house and arrested 17 men.
Police sources said that the arrested persons were identified as Faiz Ali Khan resident of Chanchalguda, Mohammad Rashid Ahmed Khan, Afroze Khan, Asrar Ahmed Khan.

Hyderabad, November 29: The following is the text of an open letter written by Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy to Congress president Sonia Gandhi Monday while resigning from the Congress party and parliament:

Respected Madam,

I am writing this letter to you with a very heavy heart and deep anguish. I have been suffering humiliation in silence during the last 14 months. A malicious campaign was being unleashed against me, my family and lastly, against my late father and a great leader of masses Dr.Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.

Jaganmohan’s resignation will not affect us, says Congress MP

New Delhi, November 29: Congress leader V. Hanumatha Rao Monday said the resignation of party MP Jaganmohan Reddy will have “no effect on the Congress” in Andhra Pradesh, adding that the party was “very strong”.

Rao, a Rajya Sabha MP from Andhra Pradesh, said only a few people close to Jaganmohan may quit following his resignation, but that will not affect the party.

“In the Congress party, nobody will go against the Congress. Few close people (to Jaganmohan) may resign… no effect on the Congress party,” Rao told a TV channel.

“Congress is very strong,” he added.

A dangerous rowdy sheeter held

Hyderabad, November 29: Commissioner’s Tast force South team has arrested a dangerous rowdy sheeter belonging to Chatrinaka police station and recovered a dagger from his possession.

It is said that B Ramchandar resident of Uppuguda was absconding for the past few days playing a trick on the police. The task force police arrested him and recovered a sharp dagger from his possession.

Sources say that Ramchandar’s rowdy sheet had been opened in 1985 and he was involved in two murder cases besides three incidents of fighting.
