Ajay fined for smoking publicly

Mumbai, September 02: Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn has been fined Rs.100 for smoking in the courtyard of a multiplex in Panaji, police said Wednesday.

“The notice will be issued today (Wednesday). We are acting on a complaint filed by the state health department (Directorate of Health Services, DHS),” said Deputy Superintendent of Police Deu Benaulikar.

Oldest American city turns 445

New York, September 02: St. Augustine in Florida, the oldest city in the US, will celebrate its 445th birth anniversary this week.

St. Augustine will commemorate its founding by Spaniard Pedro Menendez de Aviles with the inauguration of the Nombre de Dios Mission Museum and the celebration of a Mass of thanksgiving, among other events.

The anniversary will be marked with a historic recreation of the arrival in 1565 of Florida’s first governor, Menendez de Aviles.

Chinese girls taught to say no to sex

Beijing, September 02: Girls in a province in southwest China are being given tips on how to say no to boys asking for sex.

Girls in Yunnan province are being given a booklet that teaches about chastity. The Yunnan provincial education department has asked all local high schools and universities to “teach girls how to reject sexual requests until marriage”, the Global Times reported citing the Chuncheng Evening News.

Authorities have introduced a textbook on sex education titled “Focus on the Family” published by a US-based Christian organisation.

Pakistani Taliban added to US terror list

Washington, September 02: The United States has designated the Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP), or Pakistani Taliban, linked to the botched Times Square bombing attempt by a Pakistani American, as a Foreign Terrorist Organization.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Wednesday also designated two senior TTP leaders Hakimullah Mehsud and Wali Ur Rehman as specially designated global terrorists as the US imposed financial and travel sanctions on the Pakistan based group that trained Times Square suspect Faisal Shahzad.

Woman ends life at Mumbai airport

Mumbai, September 02: An unidentified woman today committed suicide at the Sahar International Airport here today, police said.

The woman, in her 20s, jumped off the departure bridge of the airport this evening, DCP Satynarayanan Chowdhary said.

She was alone at the time of the incident, he said.

Shane Warne says match-fixers should be banned for life

Melbourne, September 02: The former Test spinner said those behind the damaging scandal that had rocked world cricket should never play again.

“They should be thrown out, simple as that,” Warne said.

“I don’t think there is any other way to do it, if they have been involved in throwing games.

“They should be banned for life … anybody who is involved should be thrown out.”

Warne, who commentated for the Australia-Pakistan match that is now under investigation, said it would almost make sense if the allegations were proved to be correct.

Special law to construct Ram Mandir: RSS

Bhopal, September 02: RSS would prefer framing a law for the construction of Ram Temple at Ayodhya even if the judgement on the issue of the disputed structure goes in their favour, former RSS spokesman Ram Madhav said here today.

“I am convinced that the judgement would come in our favour, but even then we would like to go for framing of a law by the Parliament for the construction of Ram Temple in Ayodhya as there is no guarantee that it will be constructed after the verdict as other party will challenge it in higher court,” Madhav told reporters here.

Pietersen sorry after Twitter outburst

London, September 02: Kevin Pietersen on Wednesday apologised to England’s selectors before claiming that he understands why he was omitted from the squad.

Pietersen was dropped on Tuesday for the two Twenty20 and five ODI matches after a poor run of form with the bat which has seen him fail to pass 100 in almost two years.

The 30-year-old caused controversy when he accidentally posted a foul-mouthed outburst on micro-blogging site Twitter following the decision, slamming the selectors for dropping him for the series.

Teens held in NY for harassing Muslims

New York, September 02: A group of teenagers in western New York has been arrested for allegedly harassing worshipers and firing a shotgun outside a mosque.

The five teens allegedly beeped their car horns and yelled obscenities during a religious service, according to Eyewitness News, a local media outlet.

Tim Weader, 17, Dylan Phillips, 18, Jeff Donahue, 18, and Anthony Ogden, 18 along with Mark Vendetti, 17 have been charged with disrupting a religious service, which is a misdemeanor charge.

No such term as saffron terror: BJP

New Delhi, September 02: The BJP on Wednesday strongly objected to the use of the term “saffron terror” by Home Minister P Chidambaram in Parliament, saying there was no such word and the “sacrosanct” colour cannot be associated with terrorism.

“There is no term as saffron terror. We have effectively said this in both Houses of Parliament… saffron is sacrosanct for India. It cannot be associated with terrorism,” Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj said.

240 victims of mass rape in Congo: UN

London, September 02: The UN Wednesday said the number of civilians who had been brutally gang raped recently in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo now exceeds 240.

The UN alleged July 30 that Congolese militants of the Mai-Mai group and Rwandan rebels of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) descended upon villages in Kibua and the Walikale areas of the North Kivu province and engaged in the violent assault of at least 154 civilians.

Cong MPs of T’gana pleads for putting off of Group-I exams

Hyderabad, September 02: Eleven Congress MPs from the Telangana region today requested the Chief Minister Mr K Rosaiah to give necessary instructions to the A P Public Service Commission to postpone the Group-I service examinations by two months.

In a letter sent to the Chief Minister, the MPs pointed out that the students were associated with the Telangana agitation in a peaceful manner and were not able to prepare themselves well for the Group-I service Examinations. In view of this, they want the examination be postponed by two months.

Over 1.5 lakh submissions to Srikrishna Panel over bifurcation

Warangal, September 02: The Srikrishna Commission has received about 1.5 lakh submissions from the people in Andhra Pradesh over the contentious issue of bifurcation of the state.

Revealing this to media persons on Wednesday, Chairman of the Commission for Consultations over the Situation in Andhra Pradesh Justice BN Srikrishna, assured that the Panel’s report would be submitted before its year-end deadline.

Justice Srikrishna further said that of the 1.5 lakh representations received by the Panel so far, over 3,500 submissions contained elaborate details, facts and figures.

Four held for attack on non-T evaluators in OU campus

Hyderabad, September 02: The city police on Wednesday arrested four students allegedly belonged to a group of Osmania University Students’ Joint Action Committee (OUSJAC) for attacking ‘Non-local’ lecturers who had come to evaluate B Ed answer scripts on the Osmania university campus on August 28.

The police identified the ‘vigilantes’ as Saidulu, Jagan, Srinivas and Veerababu. The attackers alleged that non-local lecturers were evaluating with bias and it was harming interests of Telangana students.
