ICC should take action against guilty players: Tendulkar

New Delhi, September 03: Indian batting icon Sachin Tendulkar on Friday said the International Cricket Council should thoroughly investigate the ‘spot-fixing’ scandal that has plunged the game into a crisis and take action against players who are found guilty.

“ICC should make a thorough probe in the ‘spot-fixing’ scandal and take appropriate action if the players are found guilty,” Tendulkar told reporters here.

“If the allegations are true, they will certainly bring disrepute to the game,” he added.

Mistaken alcohol use kills baby during surgery

New York, September 03: A seven-month-old baby died after doctors at a hospital in the US flushed his system with alcohol instead of saline solution during a heart surgery.

The incident, termed as a terrible mistake, occurred while Tressel Meinardi underwent heart surgery at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Ohio Aug 21, the Herald Sun reported Friday citing cincinnati.com.

The injection of alcohol caused organ failure in the baby, a resident of Richmond in Indiana state.

“There’s no question a mistake was made,” Coroner O’dell Owens said.

London, September 03: Pakistan High Commissioner to Britain Wajid S Hassan on Friday gave a new twist to the spot-fixing scandal involving the Pakistan cricket team, saying the three accused players were “innocent” and Indian bookmakers were involved in the whole murky episode.

“I found that all these three players were absolutely innocent. They were not involved, they have been taken for a ride and the agent ( Mazhar Majeed) was the culprit, in the sense that he was responsible for defrauding some Asian bookies,” Hassan said.

Another attack on Israelis in West Bank: Report

Tel Aviv, September 03: Israeli settlers in the West Bank escaped injury late Thursday after the third attack by militant Palestinians in the past 48 hours, Israeli media reported.

The concentrated attacks were seen as an attempt to undermine the Middle East peace talks that got underway Thursday in Washington between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

The shootings took place at the Ofra settlement in the West Bank. An Israeli army spokeswoman said no one had been injured.

Retired Army man dies after mob assault

Kolkata, September 03: A retired Army major died today after being thrashed by locals at Budgebudge in the outskirts of the city following a brawl over collection of water from a public tap. Jayanta Sarkar (52) had allegedly abused and slapped a little girl after a row over fetching of water from the tap last evening, DIG Presidency Range Siddhinath Gupta said.

Enraged over the incident, locals beat up Sarkar with lathis and iron bars, injuring him seriously. The retired Army officer succumbed to his injuries at the Budgebudge ESI hospital this morning, Gupta said.

Taliban claim responsibility for Pakistan attacks

Lahore, September 03: Pakistan’s Taliban on Friday took responsibility for triple bombings at a Shi’ite Muslim procession in the city of Lahore that killed 33 people.

“It’s revenge for the killings of innocent Sunnis,” a spokesman for Qari Hussain Mehsud, mentor of the Taliban’s suicide bombers, told Reuters by telephone from an undisclosed location.

24 Indians rescued from traffickers in Malaysia

Ipoh, September 03: At least 24 Indian men who were found locked up in a house in a Malaysian town have been rescued and two Pakistani men allegedly involved in a human trafficking racket have been detained, a media report said Friday.

Malaysian police found a clue to the Indian men’s detention from an Aug 30 media report from India and rescued the men from Sungai Siput town, 30 km from here, last Monday.

Bareilly, September 03: In a shocking case, a woman police officer was dragged on the road by her subordinates in a vehicle after she objected to extortion by them in the name of traffic checking.

Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Kalpana Saxena, who is in hospital with a fractured hand and injuries on her head, said she had received information from an Army jawan on Thursday evening that some traffic constables were demanding bribes from truckers near the Jat regimental centre here.

I Was Not Approached By Any Bookie: Ganguly

Kolkata, September 03: Sourav Ganguly on Thursday said he had never been approached by any bookie during his stint as Indian captain, even as the world cricket is rocked by ‘spot-fixing’ involving Pakistani cricketers.

“Three former India captains — Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble — too were never approached and such a situation was beyond their imagination,” Ganguly told a TV channel.

Urging the cricketers to be responsible, Ganguly said the International Cricket Council (ICC) was not a policing body and could not have a constant watch on the players.

Delhi University students vote to elect new union

New Delhi, September 03: Delhi University students today cast their votes to elect a new union in a poll which will decide the fate of 41 candidates.

Tight security arrangements have been put in place and Electronic Voting Machines were used for the polling.

“As many as 943 EVMs have been pressed into service.

There are 111 centres for the college elections and 130 for DUSU,” said Chief Electoral Officer Gurmeet Singh.

The massive explosion occurred on the Ring Road Friday morning, Geo News reported.

London, September 03: The London tabloid The Sun on Friday frontpaged a story saying that underworld don Dawood Ibrahim was linked to matchfixing by Pakistani cricketers.

The newspaper said, billionaire crime boss Dawood Ibrahim had ties with al-Qaeda.

Fugitive Dawood Ibrahim, 54, is said to head a rigging network that connects Britain to the Middle East, India and Pakistan, says the report.

On Thursday night an informed source claimed that Ibrahim was one of the only crooks in Asia capable of fixing international games.

ACP’s son and daughter-in-law commit suicide in Mumbai

Mumbai, September 03: The son and daughter-in-law of an Assistant Police Commissioner (ACP) allegedly committed suicide at their residence in suburban Malad here, police said today.

“The young couple– Abhijit (27) and wife Ashwini (21)– were found dead at their residence this morning. Abhijit, son of ACP Madhusudan Kurne, used his father’s service revolver to kill himself,” Additional Police Commissioner, Ramrao Pawar told PTI.

Preliminary probe has suggested that Abhijit may have shot his wife ahead of taking the extreme step himself, Pawar said.

Two-year-old kicks the butt

London, September 03: A two-year-old boy in Indonesia, who used to smoke 40 cigarettes a day, has quit smoking after entering rehab.

Child protection officials sent Aldi Rizal for therapy and, after three months of treatment, he has kicked the habit. He is now playing normally for the first time.

The rehab left Aldi confused. He cried after finishing his last cigarette and then beat his head on walls, The Sun reported Friday.

He had already started showing health complications with his heart developing a thicker lining. He often had a vacant or listless look.

Malaysian woman wins invasion of privacy case against doctor

Kuala Lumpur, September 03: A Malaysian woman writer has won a legal battle against her doctors who photographed intimate parts of her body prior to a surgery.

Surgeons must obtain the consent of their female patients before taking photographs of their intimate parts, ruled a High Court bench, The Star newspaper reported Friday.

Judicial Commissioner Chew Soo Ho allowed a claim for invasion of privacy filed by freelance writer Lee Ewe Poh, 50, against two doctors, Lim Teik Mau and Loh Guan Lye.

IMF to give Pakistan $450 mln in flood aid

Islamabad, September 03: The International Monetary Fund will give Pakistan $450 million in emergency flood aid and disburse funds in September to help the country’s economy cope with the devastation, the head of the IMF said on Thursday.

Severe flooding in Pakistan has destroyed cropland and livestock and displaced millions of people, causing damage that the government has estimated at $43 billion, or almost one quarter of the South Asian nation’s 2009 GDP.

Bihar cop killed: Worried families appeal to Maoists

Patna, September 03: Rajni Devi, wife of Sub-Inspector Abhay Prasad Yadav, reportedly killed by Maoist rebels in captivity, had been camping with her four minor children outside the CM residence for two days after meeting Nitish Kumar on Tuesday evening.
