Pooja Batra to star in US sitcom ‘Outsourced’

New Delhi, September 04: Remember Pooja Batra? The former Indian beauty queen and actress is Hollywood bound.

She is making a comeback to showbiz with upcoming American sitcom “Outsourced” and also helping Indian actors find a foothold there with her casting company.

Pooja, 36, who married orthopaedic surgeon Sonu Ahluwalia in 2003, is currently settled in Los Angeles and has been running her own casting agency – Glow Bell Inc. She will dazzle on screen after five years. Pooja has done over 21 movies like “Virasat”, “Haseena Maan Jaayegi” and “Nayak – The Real Hero”.

Maoists sorry for wrongly saying Yadav was killed

Patna, September 04: A day after the bullet-riddled body of Bihar cop Lucas Tete was found, Maoists Saturday apologised for wrongly saying that they had killed Sub-Inspector Abhay Kumar Yadav. The rebels said that the other three policemen they had abducted were safe.

Maoist spokesperson Avinash told a local Hindi news channel that he was sorry for the wrong information he gave Thursday about Yadav’s death.

The bullet-riddled body of Tete was recovered Friday morning in the Simratali forests of Lakhisarai district, about 150 km from state capital Patna.

KCR vows bandh, cops warn against disruption

Warangal, September 03: Warangal urban superintendent of police (SP) J. Prabhakar Rao warned Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC) members and students not to cause disruption during APPSC preliminary exam in 30 centres of Warangal, on September 5.

According to sources, more than 11,000 students are appearing for the Group I exam in Warangal.

Lucknow, September 04: In a role reversal, two prisoners took into “custody” two drunk constables who were escorting them for a court hearing and took them to a police station

in Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor district, officials said Friday.

The unlikely incident took place Thursday near a local court in this town, some 300 km from Lucknow, where two prisoners, booked under section 307 IPC (attempt to murder), were set free by the three police constables who had brought them from Jyotiba Phule Nagar district jail for the case’s hearing, police said.

Apex court stays tribunal’s order on military nurses

New Delhi, September 03: The Supreme Court has stayed an Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT) verdict directing the central government to treat all the commissioned officers of the Military Nursing Service (MNS) on par with the regular army.

An apex court bench of Justice Aftab Alam and Justice R.M.Lodha passed the order on a petition by the central government challenging the March 30 verdict of the principal bench of the AFT. The apex court passed the stay order on Wednesday but it was only made available Friday.

Delhi to have 42 Info-cafes to help tourists during CWG

New Delhi, September 03: Delhi will have 42 information kiosks-cum-food counters installed by a private firm to make the city “more hospitable” for tourists during the Commonwealth Games.

City-based Ved Pohoja Associates today said it is setting up the kiosks, branded ‘Tourist Info-Cafes,’ in several areas across the capital with support from civic agencies like MCD and NDMC.

Cargo plane crashes in Dubai

Dubai, September 03: A cargo plane crashed Friday evening in an uninhabited area in Dubai, media reports said.

The aircraft crashed on a highway near Dubai International Airport, Xinhua reported citing al-Jazeera TV.

No intimation from Karnataka police regarding questioning of Madani’s security men

Kochi, September 03: Kerala director general of police (DGP) Jacob Punnoose, today said the state had not received any intimation from Karnataka police regarding the questioning of personal security men of PDP leader Abdul Nasser Madani, an accused in the Bangalore blast case.

‘If there is any intimation in this regard from Karnataka police, Kerala police will give full support’, the DGP told reporters here.

Rathore’s parole plea rejected

Chandigarh, September 03: The authorities in Haryana’s Pachkula district Friday rejected the plea of disgraced former state police chief S.P.S. Rathore for parole to supervise the harvesting of crops at his agricultural land near here.

A meeting of district authorities decided to recommend to the Chandigarh administration that Rathore should not be granted parole from his 18-month rigorous imprisonment term that he is serving at Chandigarh’s high-security Burail jail following his conviction in the Aug 12, 1990 molestation case of teenaged tennis player Ruchika Girhotra.

Maoists call 48-hour shutdown to protest Azad’s ‘murder’

Kolkata, September 03: Koteshwar Rao alias Kishenji, leader of the outlawed Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), has called a 48-hour shutdown from Sep 13 in eight states demanding a probe into what he alleged was a “cold blooded murder” of party colleague Cherukuri Rajkumar alias Azad by Andhra Pradesh Police.

The shutdown will be observed in West Bengal, Bihar, Orissa, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, in Gadchiroli, Bhandara and Chadrapur districts of Maharashtra and in Balaghat district of Madhya Pradesh.

Jagan embarks on controversial yatra

Ongole, September 03: Notwithstanding reservations of the party high command, Congress MP Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy today resumed his controversial yatra in Andhra Pradesh’s Prakasam district.

With close relative and Mines Minister Balineni Srinivasa Reddy standing by his side, Jagan began his yatra at Giddalur by unveiling a statue of his late father Y S Rajasekhara Reddy.

Sehwag’s uncle commits suicide

New Delhi, September 03: A 72-year-old uncle of cricketer Virender Sehwag allegedly committed suicide in his residence in south-west Delhi, apparently depressed over prolonged illness, police said today.

Bhagat Singh was found hanging at his residence in Laxmi Garden in Najafgarh on Tuesday night by his son Lalit Singh, who informed police.

His body was taken to Rao Tula Ram Hospital where his post mortem was conducted.

Singh, who had kidney-related problems, was apparently depressed over prolonged illness. However, he left no suicide note.

Tete’s killing shows real face of Maoists : DGP

Ranchi, September 03: Condemning the killing of Bihar Military Police havildar Lukas Tete, Jharkhand police chief Neyaz Ahmed today said the incident has exposed the Maoists.

“What message do they want to send by killing a person having three daughters. This shows their real face,” the DGP told PTI.

An alert was sounded across the state soon after the news about Tete’s killing reached here.

The body of Tete, who was among the four policemen of the Bihar Military Police kidnapped from Lakhisarai district on Sunday, was found this morning.

Chopper carrying AP minister suffers technical problem

Hyderabad, September 03: A technical problem in a helicopter today forced Andhra Pradesh Major Irrigation Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah to abruptly abandon his air travel and continue his journey by road, police said.

The minister, who set off in a private helicopter from Hyderabad, was scheduled to visit different irrigation projects in Nizamabad and Karimnagar districts of the state.

According to police, the minister first visited the Sriramsagar project (SRSP) in Nizamabad district following which he proceeded towards Karimnagar.

Heavy rainfall forecast for Andhra

Hyderabad, September 03: Heavy rains may occur in some parts of Rayalaseema region and four districts of coastal region of Andhra Pradesh over the next two days, the weather office said today.

The Meteorological Department issued a warning for occurrence of isolated heavy to very heavy rains over Rayalaseema and in the districts of Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam and Nellore of coastal Andhra.

AP police tightens security for APPSC examinations

Hyderabad, September 03: Elaborate security arrangements have been made to ensure peaceful conduct of Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission (APPSC) examinations for Group-I services at 445 centres across the state on September 5, a top official said today.

In view of the Osmania University Students Joint Action Committee (OUJAC) threat to ‘shutdown’ Telangana on September 5 demanding for postponement of the exams, state DGP K Aravinda Rao has directed the Commissioners of Police and District SPs to make necessary security arrangements, the official said.

UPA govt soft on terror: BJP

Bangalore, September 03: BJP today accused the UPA government of going “soft” on terrorism and naxalism.

“The Congress-led government at the Centre is displaying confused and soft attitude towards terrorism and naxalism,” BJP Vice President Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said at a press conference here.

“The National Advisory Committee has members who support Maoists,” Naqvi alleged.

Despite opposition parties extending support, the government has failed to tackle these issues, he said.

Food inflation up at 10.86 pc in third week of Aug

New Delhi, September 03: Annual food inflation rose marginally to 10.86 per cent for the week ended August 21, after the previous two-week decline, despite a fall in vegetables prices.

Food inflation had softened to 10.05 per cent for the week ended August 14 against 10.35 per cent in the previous week.

On an yearly basis, potato became cheaper by over 51 per cent, while vegetables overall saw a decline of 9.90 per cent. Onion prices also fell by 8.97 per cent, official data released today showed.
