ICC unhappy with Mushtaq’s presence in England’s dressing room

London, September 04: In the wake of the spot-fixing scandal in the Pakistani team, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said it is unhappy with the presence of Mushtaq Ahmed — who was implicated in the 2000 match-fixing scandal — as England’s spin bowling coach.

ICC’s chief executive Haroon Lorgat said Saturday that the world body would have never employed the Pakistani because of his past links with match-fixing.

Telangana heading for showdown over state exam

Hyderabad, September 04: A showdown between Telangana activists and the Andhra Pradesh government appears certain as the Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission (APPSC) selection tests will be held Sunday despite a Telangana shutdown being called by some students groups.

Four students of the Osmania University here Saturday launched a fast for indefinite period, demanding that the APPSC preliminary exam be postponed until 42 percent of the jobs at stake are reserved for the Telangana region.

11 hurt as school van catches fire in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow, September 04: At least 11 students received burn injuries Saturday when a school van carrying them burst into flames following a gas leak from its LPG tank in Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh district, police said.

All the 11 students of a private school, who are in the age group of 8-13 years, are being treated in the Azamgarh district hospital and a primary health centre. Doctors said the condition of three is critical.

According to police, the accident took place in the Bilariyaganj area, some 300-km from here, where the van of the Ma Yashoda Inter College caught fire.

No curfew in Srinagar despite separatist shutdown

Srinagar, September 04: Authorities did not impose curfew or restrictions in Srinagar Saturday even though separatists called for a shutdown across Kashmir Valley.

“There are no restrictions anywhere in Srinagar city today (Saturday). Also, there are no restrictions anywhere in north and central Kashmir areas,” a police officer said here.

“Preventive restrictions have been imposed in Pulwama and Anantnag towns in south Kashmir only,” he said.

Jayalalithaa flays police inaction over hotel attack

Chennai, September 04: Opposition leader and AIADMK general secretary J. Jayalalithaa Saturday launched a scathing attack on the state police for failing to take action against those involved in an attack on a star hotel here late Tuesday.

A mob of nearly a hundred people, who claimed to be supporters of a senior official of the Sun TV, ransacked the Checkers Hotel damaging property worth several lakh of rupees.

Jagan leaves for Prakasam to resume ‘Odarpu Yatra’

Kadapa, September 04: Congress MP YS Jaganmohan Reddy on Friday left for Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh, from his family estate at Idupulapaya to resume his conroversial ‘Odarpu Yatra’.

Jagan stopped at Porumamilla in Kadapa district in the state on his way to Giddaluru in Prakasam, from where he would commence the ‘Yatra’.

He met the families of his supporters and also unveiled a statue of his father late YS Rajasekhara Reddy.

Exports from SEZs up 68 pc in Q1 at Rs Rs 58,685.46 cr

Hyderabad, September 04: Export from special economic zones (SEZs) grew 68 per cent to about Rs 58,685.46 crores in the first quarter ended June 30, 2010 as compared to Rs 35,013 crore in the corresponding period last year.

Exports from SEZs in the 2008-09 were about Rs 99,000 crore which increased to Rs 2,20,000 crores in 2009-10, registering a growth of 120 per cent.

These numbers were revealed at an Open House Meet organised here yesterday by the Export Promotion Council for EOUs and SEZs (EPCES) and Visakhapatanam Special Economic Zone (VSEZ).

Anti-mosque web game banned

Vienna, September 04: Austrian authorities have banned a far-right online game where players eliminate animated mosques and Muslims, the political party behind the game said.

The ”Bye Bye Mosque” game, which has had over 200,000 visitors since it was launched on Monday, has drawn sharp criticism from Austria’s Social Democrats and Green Party, as well as the Islamic and Roman Catholic communities.

Dentist buys ad asking Hillary Clinton to run again

Washington, September 04: A Chicago dentist is paying for a new ad advocating that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton make a second presidential run in 2012.

Clinton, who accepted the top diplomat’s job under Obama after her Democratic rival’s victory in 2008, has said she will not run for president again.

The ad initially aired Wednesday in New Orleans, according to CNN, which first reported the story.

It’s a practice which dates back 1,400 years, since the Prophet first built the mosque.

Dr Mohammad Khoja, who researches the history of Madinah, says there are parts of the mosque named after families, who for centuries have been bringing food to feed those who attend Iftar. “The families make budgets in which every member contributes. They buy food and serve the visitors,” he said.

Kochi, September 04: A 22-year-old aeronautical engineer, who was given police protection after her relatives threatened her for not using the purdah, says she hasn’t done any wrong by refusing to wear the veil.

Muslim wants to quit US military

Washington, September 04: Private First Class Naser Abdo said Islam is a peaceful religion and he believes US-led wars are not legitimate for a Muslim to take part in, reported.

“A Muslim is not allowed to participate in an Islamicly unjust war,” Abdo said, adding, “Any Muslim who knows his religion or maybe takes into account what his religion says can find out very clearly why he should not participate in the US military.”

Ahmed Bukhari urges calm over Ayodhya verdict

New Delhi, September 04: India’s chief Muslim cleric appealed Friday for calm over an expected court ruling on a bitterly disputed religious site that triggered massive Hindu-Muslim riots in India 18 years ago.

The Allahabad High Court in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh is due to rule later this month on the contested ownership of the Babri Mosque site in the temple town of Ayodhya.

In 1992, the 16th-century mosque was razed by Hindu zealots who said it was built on the ruins of a temple marking the birthplace of the Hindu warrior god Ram.

Hindu groups call bandh to protest priests’ killing

Nagpur, September 04: Hindu groups Saturday called for a bandh in Yavatmal district of Maharashtra to protest the killings of two temple priests.

Calling for a district bandh, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Bajrang Dal alleged that the murderers were criminals staying in the temple. The two priests and a security guard of the Mahadev temple in Arni, 200 km from here and close to the Andhra Pradesh border, were found murdered Friday.

The biggest fireball I ever saw: Dubai crash witness

Dubai, September 04: “The biggest fireball ever seen” and a “massive 20-storey tower of smoke and flames” was how witnesses described the crash of a Boeing 747-400 cargo plane in Dubai, in which two crew members were killed.

The United Parcel Service (UPS) Flight 6 took off from Dubai International Airport Friday night for the company’s hub in Cologne, Germany, when it crashed at around 7.45 p.m. near the Nad al Sheba Military Camp, The National reported.

Both the pilot and the co-pilot died in the crash.

Joseph John, an academic, was driving with a friend when he saw the explosion.

Heavy rainfall forecast for Andhra

Hyderabad, September 04:Heavy rains may occur in some parts of Rayalaseema region and four districts of coastal region of Andhra Pradesh over the next two days, the weather office said yesterday.

The Meteorological Department issued a warning for occurrence of isolated heavy to very heavy rains over Rayalaseema and in the districts of Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam and Nellore of coastal Andhra.

Telangana issue hits recruitment exam of officers

Hyderabad, September 04: The examination for recruitment of Group-I service officers in Andhra Pradesh scheduled for September 5 has come under a cloud with students and political leaders from Telangana demanding postponement of exam till the share of Telangana in recruitment is decided.

The Students from Telangana region have said injustice has been meted out to the region in the past and demanded at least 42 per cent reservation in recruitment.

Those from non-Telangana region have opposed any such move.

Two pilots killed in cargo plane crash in Dubai

Dubai, September 04: Two pilots were killed Friday when a Boeing 747 cargo plane crashed on a road just two minutes after it took off from Dubai airport, police said.

The plane which took off for Cologne in Germany came down in a ball of fire at about 8 p.m. near the Nad Al Sheba military camp close to the Global Village, just 20 km from the airport, according to Khaleej Times.

Both pilots died and their bodies have been recovered, police sources said.
