China launches new satellite

Beijing, September 05: China successfully launched a new satellite into space Sunday, which will improve television and radio broadcasting signals in the country.

The “SinoSat-6″ was launched at 12:14 a.m. from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre in southwest China’s Sichuan Province. The Long March 3B rocket took SinoSat-6 into a geostationary transfer orbit 26 minutes after the launch, Xinhua reported.

Mel B denies marriage turmoil

London, September 05: Former Spice Girl Melanie Brown has shrugged off rumours about rifts in her marriage by posting a picture of her with husband Stephen Belafonte on Twitter.

The singer’s husband was said to have told a British tabloid last month that the couple’s union is over and Brown plans to return to Britain without him, reports aceshowbiz.com.

The claims forced Mel B’s representative to insist the relationship was “all fine”, but the pair has remained tight-lipped about the state of their marriage.

14 Al Qaeda men held in Yemen

Sana’a, September 05: Security forces have arrested 14 suspected members of the terrorist network Al Qaeda in a massive crackdown on the group in the restive southern town of Loudar, the Interior Ministry said early Sunday.

“Fourteen suspected Al Qaeda affiliates have been captured during a combing operation to trace remnants of the terrorist elements into their dens, after the crushing defeat they suffered in Loudar,” the ministry said in a statement.

Pak trio admit they took money from Majeed

Islamabad, September 05: Mired in a spot-fixing scam, the Pakistani trio of Salman Butt, Mohammed Aamir and Mohammed Asif have told the investigators that they took money from alleged bookie Mazhar Majeed but denied any wrongdoing.

The suspended trio, being grilled by Scotland Yard here, claimed the money they took from Majeed was on account of sponsorship contracts they had signed with different commercial organisations.

They insisted that they did not know that Majeed, working as an agent for them, was also a bookmaker.

I pray for abducted policemen: Rahul Gandhi

Samastipur, September 05: Amid the general public dissatisfaction over the Centre and state government’s apparent in-action in the Bihar hostage crisis, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi on Saturday, Sep 4 said that he prayed for policemen abducted by Maoists.

“I pray for the policemen taken hostage by the Maoists from Lakhisarai… I also pray for the one who was killed (by the Maoists),” Gandhi told a rally here.

Cong corporator Kidnapped

Anantapur, September 05: The Congress corporator, Mr Chavva Mohan Reddy, was allegedly kidnapped by some unidentified culprits here on Saturday.

According to the information, the corporator was kidnapped in Madanapalle of Chittoor district. The corporator’s relatives are alleging that one Dr Sudarshan Reddy’s group might have abducted him.

GHMC warns schools over fire safety measures

Hyderabad, September 05: Nizamabad Member of Parliament Madhu Yaskhi on Saturday said that he had submitted memorandums to the state government urging it to concede to the demand of 42 per cent quota in jobs for the Group-1 qualifiers from Telangana region.

Four killed as security forces clash with Yemen militants

Sanaa, September 05: At least two soldiers and two separatists have been killed in clashes in the southern Yemeni provinces of Lahej and Abyan, security sources said Saturday.

In the restive al-Habileen town of Lahej province, members of the separatist Southern Movement ambushed and burned a police vehicle, killing one soldier and wounding three others late Saturday, the sources told DPA.

Thousands of people have attended rallies in Paris and 130 other French towns to protest at the government’s policy of deporting Roma people.

Police say turnout across France was slightly more than 77,000 while organisers put the figure nearer 100,000.

With polls suggesting at least 65% of French people back the policy, the government played down the protests.

Majority in Kashmir not anti-India: Advani

New Delhi, September 05: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani Saturday said a majority of people in Jammu and Kashmir do not nurture any anti-India sentiments.

Writing in his blog, Advani said surveys conducted by even pro-Pakistan persons have found that most people in the state do not support merger with Pakistan.

“Not many outside the state are aware of the state’s diverse demography,” Advani said in his lengthy blog on Kashmir.

Delhi to host conference of world renowed spinal cord injury experts

New Delhi, September 04:The national capital is all set to host a conference of experts in the realm of spinal cord injuries from around the world.

An International Spinal Cord Society (ISCoS) spokesperson today said the combined 49th ISCoS, 10th Spinal Cord Society and ninth Asian Spinal Cord Network annual meet will take place in Delhi from October 29-31.

The conference will include lectures by experts on latest research in the field of treatment of spinal cord injuries and ethics in spinal cord injury management among other topics.

Hold Kashmir dialogue without preconditions: Karat

New Delhi, September 04: Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) general secretary Prakash Karat Saturday met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and asked him to “take a bold initiative for a political dialogue” without preconditions with the people of Jammu and Kashmir to find a solution to the problems of the state.
