Pak plans to send commission to India to quiz 26/11 witnesses

Islamabad, August 29: Pakistan government plans to approach an anti-terror court, conducting the trial of seven suspects in the Mumbai attacks, to form a commission that can visit India to record the statements of key witnesses and officials, Interior Minister Rehman has said.

“We will request the court to form a commission and that commission can go (to India) and record the statement of witnesses, including the magistrate and police officers who recorded the statement of (Ajmal) Kasab,” Malik told reporters.

Dhoni loses top spot, Sehwag rises in ICC rankings

Dubai, August 29: Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni lost his number one spot but opening batsman Virender Sehwag gained eight places to return to the top-10 at eighth in the ICC ODI rankings issued today.

India held on to the second spot in the team rankings despite losing the tri-series final to Sri Lanka last night.

Sri Lanka, sixth before the series, are just behind India, and in front of South Africa, who drop to fourth, when the ratings are calculated beyond the decimal point.

Omar welcomes Centre’s efforts to address Kashmir issue

Tangdhar (JK), August 29: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today welcomed the Centre’s efforts to address the Kashmir issue in a peaceful atmosphere through dialogue process.

“I welcome the statement recently made by the Union Home Minister regarding Jammu and Kashmir. Right from the day I have taken over as chief minister, I am strongly advocating addressing of political issues of the state and restoring both external and internal dialogue channels,” he told a public gathering here.

Nithyananda followers file complaint against Lenin

Bangalore, August 29: Followers of self-styled godman Nithyananda Swami have filed a complaint in a local court against a former devotee, who shot the alleged footage showing him in a compromising position with an actress, seeking immediate action against him.

Failing to get their FIR registered, a follower along with a lawyer and a supporter proceeded to Magistrate Court in Ramanagara, yesterday and filed a private complaint against Lenin, the followers said in a press release here.

Shiv Sena not involved in ‘settlement’ issues: Thackeray

Nagpur, August 29: Shiv Sena today denied involvement of party legislators in “settlement” issues as alleged by NCP president and Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar.

Pawar had yesterday alleged that opposition parties in Maharashtra deliberately ask questions about builders’ dealings in the Assembly and later approach the same builders and “settle” the issues with them.

Pak Prez summons preliminary report on fixing allegations

Islamabad, August 29: Taking serious note of the ‘spot-fixing’ scandal that rocked Pakistan cricket team in the ongoing fourth Test against England in London, President Asif Ali Zardari today asked for an immediate preliminary report from PCB Chairman Ijaz Butt into the allegations.

The President’s spokesman, Farhatullah Babar said in a statement that Zardari was disappointed over the media reports of fixing allegations against some Pakistani players.

PDP flays decision to close Srinagar airport for 15 days

Srinagar, August 29: Expressing concern over temporary closure of Srinagar airport from September 1 due to runway repair work, opposition PDP today accused the NC-led coalition government of failing to protect the interests of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

“Decision to close Srinagar airport once again reflects that state government has failed to protect interests of the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” PDP General Secretary Mohammad Dilawar Mir said in a statement here.

Sonia all set to be Congress president for record fourth term

New Delhi, August 29: Sonia Gandhi is all set to be re-elected as Congress President for a record fourth term this week with the polls for the top party post likely to be an uncontested affair.

The last date for filing nominations for the election is September 2, a day on which several sets of nomination papers are expected to be filed on behalf of 63-year-old Gandhi.

Pakistan cricket hit by match-fixing scandal

Karachi, August 29: International cricket was today rocked by a match-fixing scandal with as many as seven top Pakistani players, including captain Salman Butt, being under the scanner for their role in ‘spot-fixing’ in the ongoing fourth Test against England at Lord’s.

In a dramatic development the Scotland Yard detectives visited the Pakistan dressing room immediately after the third day’s play to question the players after a British tabloid’s sting operation exposed the alleged nexus between players and the bookies.

Telangana students attack teachers in Osmania University

Hyderabad, August 29: In a new twist to the movement for a separate Telangana state, students from the region Saturday manhandled teachers from Andhra and Rayalaseema on the Osmania University campus here.

Protesting the spot evaluation of their B.Ed examination papers by teachers from other regions, the pro-Telangana students chased them away. A couple of teachers were also beaten up by the protesters.

The incident sparked tension on the campus, which has been witnessing violent protests and student suicides for a separate Telangana state since November last year.

Judge who disposed of 111 cases in one day faces lawyers’ ire

Hyderabad, August 29: When a judge in Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur district disposed of a record 111 cases in a single day last week, little did he realise that this will attract ire from members of his own legal fraternity.

While common people have welcomed his move to ensure speedy justice, it has left a section of lawyers at Mangalgiri city civil court fuming.

Junior Civil Judge J.V.V. Satyanarayana Murthy says he is determined to pass more judgments in bulk to provide much-needed relief to litigants. But the lawyers conveyed to him that at this speed they would turn jobless.

Four more encephalitis deaths

Uttar Pradesh, August 29: Four more deaths due to encephalitis were reported in this Uttar Pradesh town on Saturday, taking this year’s toll in its epicenter, Gorakhpur, to 215.

Three of the four victims were boys in the age group of 5-12 years, while one was a 3-year-old girl.

Gangotri, Yamunotri yatra resume

Uttarakhand, August 29: The pilgrimage to major Hindu shrines in Uttarakhand which has been affected due to bad weather and landslides during the last fortnight, resumed on Saturday with the opening of roads leading to them.

“The pilgrimage to Gangotri and Yamunotri was suspended after landslides triggered by heavy rains damaged roads at several places in Uttarkashi district. The vehicular traffic resumed on these roads on saturday,” official sources said.

Muggy day in Delhi, rains likely

New Delhi, August 29: Delhi woke up to a muggy Sunday morning as the humidity levels were high.

According to the weatherman, some parts of the capital could see showers later in the day.

“The skies will be cloudy with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers in some parts of the city,” said an official of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

The city didn’t get any rains on Saturday.

The maximum humidity was on the higher side at 94 percent, while the minimum was 62 percent.

Man gets bail as minor says she was not kidnapped

New Delhi, August 29: Delhi court granted bail to a young man who was put behind bars for allegedly running away with a minor girl and marrying her.

Juglu (20) was granted bail after the girl stated that she forced him to tie the knot and is now bearing his child.

The girl admitted that he did not entice her to run away and it was she who compelled him to marry her because she was afraid that her parents might marry her off to an old man.

Trial production of Etios in Sept

Japan, August 29: The world’s largest car-maker Toyota on Sunday said it will start trial production of its much anticipated small car ‘Etios’ for the Indian market from next month, three months ahead of its proposed launch.

The Japanese car major, which is present in India through a joint venture with the Kirloskar Group, is investing Rs 3,200 crore to set up its second manufacturing facility in Bangalore to roll out its first small car in India by December.
