Defiant Jagan to go ahead with ‘Odarpu’ yatra

Hyderabad, August 22: Notwithstanding the Congress high command’s warning of disciplinary action, a defiant Y S Jaganmohan Reddy has decided to go ahead with his controversial ‘Odarpu’ yatra in Andhra Pradesh’s Prakasam district on September 3.

Jagan will embark on the third phase of his yatra, which has invited the wrath of the high command and Chief Minister K Rosaiah, on September 3, a day after the first death anniversary of his father and former Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy.

IGNOU launches PC hardware course

New Delhi, August 22: A certificate course in PC Hardware and Networking was launched in association with HCL Infosystems Ltd at the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).

“It is a state-of-the-art industry ready course created jointly by IGNOU and HCL. This programme is to be offered in Instructor Led Teaching (ILT) mode,” IGNOU chief public relations officer Ravi Mohan said.

The programme will be delivered in separate batches at Computer Division, IGNOU Main Campus as well as HCL Career Development Centre in Noida with the first batch commencing from Sep 15, he said.

Computer education compulsory in Haryana

Haryana, August 22: Computer education has been made compulsory by the Haryana government in all its colleges from this year.

Minister of State for Agriculture and Cooperatives Sukhbir Singh Kataria said in a statement that modern computer labs are being set up in every government college in the state.

A government spokesman said that as per the decision, students of B.A., B.Com, M.Com and BBA will also have to acquire knowledge of computers for attaining a degree.

Haryana has over 650 colleges and eight universities, including an all-women university near Sonipat.

Sehwag on second spot in ICC rankings

Naveen sees no wrong in Rahul’s Niyamgiri visit

Bhubaneswar, August 22: Even as his partymen were opposed to Rahul Gandhi’s proposed visit to Niyamgiri area where Vedanta is planning a mining project, Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today said Congress leader was free to tour anywhere.

“It is entirely up to him (Rahul) to go where he pleases,” Patnaik told reporters here.

Patnaik’s statement on Rahul’s visit on August 26 came a day after Kalahandi district unit of ruling BJD announced its decision to oppose the Congress leader’s visit.

Youth hurls shoe at Hooda

Haryana, August 22: A 21-year-old youth, frustrated at the Haryana government’s delay in giving him a promised job, hurled a shoe at Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda during a rally in this Haryana town on Sunday, eyewitnesses said, but police denied the incident.

The shoe fell quite some distance away from Hooda.

The youth, who was identified as Shakti Singh, a resident of Baniani village here, was overpowered by villages and handed over to the police, who detained him for questioning.

DMRC plans extra trips on Raksha Bandhan

New Delhi, August 22: The Delhi Metro will run 187 extra trips to avoid overcrowding on the Raksha Bandhan festival Aug 24, an official said on Sunday.

According to a Delhi Metro spokesperson, “The metro will provide extra 187 trips and the trains will run at peak hour frequency from morning 8 a.m. to 8.30 p.m. on Tuesday.”

Normally, 21 trains are withdrawn from the lines during non-peak hours hours 12.30 p.m. 4.30 p.m. But in view of the festival, these trains will be kept in service to provide 187 extra trips Aug 24.

Six people injured in Valley

Chattabal, August 22: Six people were injured, two of them seriously, on Sunday when police used force to quell a stone pelting mob in Srinagar, many areas of which are under curfew in the wake of a shutdown call by the separatists.

All the six received pellet injuries and were shifted to different hospitals for treatment, police said. They said that the personnel were conducting a flag march in northern part of the city when it came across an “objectionable” flag at Chhana Mohalla locality of Chattabal.

Punjab demand protection to Sikhs in Kashmir

Punjab, August 22: In the wake of recent threats to Sikhs in Kashmir asking them to embrace Islam or leave the Valley, various organisations in Punjab have appealed to the Centre and state governments to provide protection to the community.

“It is a question of Sikhs’ security which both the state and central government should seriously think about,” All-India Anti-Terrorist Front Chief Maninderjeet Singh Bitta said.
Bitta also demanding repealing of Constitution’s Article 370 giving special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

Four killed, 30 injured in Jharkhand

Jharkhand, August 22: Four persons were killed and 30 others injured when a mini-bus overturned at Behta in Garhwa district.

The mishap took place when the driver tried to negotiate a bend on the road, Superintendent of Police (Garhwa) Richard Lakra said.
The passengers were on their way to attend a meeting of Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantric) president Babulal Marandi.
The injured were admitted to local hospitals, he added.

FIR lodged against unnamed people

Lucknow, August 22: No one has been named in a first information report (FIR) lodged in the deaths of four infants during a routine immunisation drive in Lucknow, police said on Sunday.

Lucknow deputy inspector general of police Rajiv Krishna said: “The family welfare department has chosen to file an unnamed FIR. Let us see what emerges out in the police investigation.”

Shortage of rainfall in 26 districts

Madhya Pradesh, August 22: As many as 26 out of 50 districts in Madhya Pradesh have been facing deficient rainfall this monsoon so far.

“Thirteen districts are facing over 30 per cent deficiency of rainfall while another 13 districts recorded less than 30 per cent less rainfall so far in this monsoon which normally ends in the first fortnight of September in Madhya Pradesh,” Meteorological Department officials said.

No flood threat in Punjab

Punjab, August 22: More water was released from the Bhakra Dam into the Satluj river by the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) on Sunday, but officials said there was no threat of floods in Punjab.

“BBMB had released 50,000 cusecs of water in the Satluj river yesterday (Saturday) and have again released 6,000 cusecs this (Sunday) morning. But, there is no need to panic as the situation is under control. All districts are safe and there is no threat of floods,” Punjab chief engineer (irrigation) Amarjit Singh Dullat said.

Massive landslides hit Chamoli

Uttarakhand, August 22: Several houses flattened in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district due to massive landslides on Sunday.

Landslide occurred in Chandoli and Karchuna villages of Chamoli Pokhri block due to heavy rains on Sunday.

Several houses have been flattered and farmlands were destroyed due to landslides in the two villages.

On the other hand, a man was killed in Pauri district on Sunday when a stone fell off from a cliff due to landslide.

According to the experts, the artist managed to achieve his trademark smoky effect, known as sfumato, on the painting by applying up to 40 layers of extremely thin glaze thought to have been smeared on with his fingers.

Mumbai, August 22: Southern star Rana Daggubatti, who will make his debut in Bollywood with “Dum Maro Dum”, says that he didn’t face any problem while shooting an intimate scene with his co-star Bipasha Basu.

“I was most comfortable doing it. Bipasha and I got along from day one. By the time we came to the love scene, we were friends and very comfortable with one another as co-stars,” said Rana.

Kerela, August 22: Member of Parliament (MP) Shashi Tharoor and Sunanda Pushkar tied the knot at his ancestral home near Palakkad in Kerala on Sunday morning.

The rituals were performed as per Kerala Hindu tradition in his 200-year-old ancestral home. Tharoor tied the ‘thali’ around Pushkar’s neck, exchanged garlands and handed her ‘podava’ or a new set of clothes around 8.30 a.m.

While Throor was clad in traditional Malayali atire of Kurtha and mundu, Sunanda, who hails from Kashmir, turned up with jerried off-white ‘veshti-mundu set’.

American soldier killed in Iraq

Baghdad, August 22: The US army says in a statement that an American soldier has been killed in southern Iraq while the last combat brigade left the country a few days earlier.

“A United States Forces — Iraq — soldier was killed today in Basra province,” the army said on Sunday,

The statement gave no further details, AFP reported.

The latest death brought the American killed in Iraq to 4,417 since the US-led invasion in 2003, according a tally based on the independent website www.icasualties.org.

Teenager jumps into well with two infants, kids die

Varanasi, August 22: Two children died when a 17-year-old mentally challenged girl jumped into a well along with them at a village in the district, police said today. Sita, the mentally challenged girl, was playing with her relative”s one-and-a-half month old daughter and their one-and-a-half-year old nephew yesterday.

She took both of them in her lap and suddenly jumped into a well, police said. The children died instantly while Sita was admitted to a private hospital, they said.
