PM’s daughter to write ‘biography’ of parents

New Delhi, August 24: Daman Singh, the writer daughter of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, is planning to write a book about her parents which will “explore the experiences that make them what they are”.

“I see this (the book) as a way to try and understand them as individuals, not merely as my parents,” says Daman, the second of Singh’s three daughters.

For Daman, whose second novel “The Sacred Grove” released last week, her father is her favourite politician. “I admire his integrity the most,” she told PTI in an interview.

Malaysian Muslim prayer hall hit in fresh attack

Kuala Lumpur, August 24: A Malaysian Muslim prayer hall was vandalised Monday, police said, in the first incident since a spate of assaults on places of worship earlier this year that heightened ethnic tensions.

Eleven churches and two Muslim prayer halls were pelted with Molotov cocktails, stones and paint in January, as a row raged over non-Muslims using the word “Allah” as a translation for “God”.

In Monday’s incident, red paint was hurled on to the wall and window of a new prayer hall in the central state of Negri Sembilan, state police chief Osman Salleh told AFP.

Prophet website reaches 70 million visitors

Dubai, August 24: Two years after its launch, the website of Prophet Mohamed has reached 70 million visitors and ranked first in a regional competition.

The website, called The Prophet of God, was launched in 2008 in the wake of the Danish cartoons that sparked outrage all over the Muslim world, said site manager Mohamed Ashour.

Does SIT want to probe Ishrat case?: Guj HC

Ahmedabad, August 24: The Gujarat High Court today directed the state government to get the view of the special investigation team (SIT), probing some 2002 riot cases, if it was willing to take investigate the Ishrat Jahan encounter case.

The direction was issued by a division bench of justices Jayant Patel and Abhilasha Kumari, while hearing a petition seeking review of the high court’s order transferring the probe in the Ishrat case to Supreme court-appointed SIT.

Drugs for US kids tried on Indians

New York, August 24: A law intended to speed up development of new drugs for US kids has ended up financing clinical trials in poor countries, where the medicines might never become available.

That’s the conclusion of a new report whose authors say the situation raises ethical concerns. More than a third of the published trials performed under 1997 legislation called the Pediatric Exclusivity Provision were carried out at least partly in developing or transitioning nations, such as Uganda and India, researchers found.

Girl attempts suicide after boy circulates MMS

Jharkhand, August 24: A teenaged village girl in Jharkhand tried to commit suicide after discovering that a boy from her village her circulated a pornographic MMS involving her, police said on Monday.

A resident of Giddi village in Ramgarh district, around 45 km from Ranchi, Rajni (name changed) belongs to a very poor family. A student of Class 8, she tried to commit suicide by slashing her veins on Sunday.

She was, however, rushed to hospital in time and her condition is said to be stable.

Chinese students like to marry after graduation

Beijing, August 24: About 70 percent of Chinese college students want to marry immediately after graduation while 46 percent want a rich spouse, a study has found.

“I would rather cry in the back of a BMW rather than laugh on a bike,” said a participant in the survey conducted by matchmaking website hongniang.com.

It’s quite popular among youth to marry the rich, but it also reflected a gloomy view of marriage and love, People’s Daily reported quoting the study Monday.

Delhi assembly adjourned sine die

New Delhi, August 24: The monsoon session of the Delhi assembly was adjourned sine die Monday after a five-day meeting, which saw discussions on the Commonwealth Games and price rise besides law and order.

After a discussion on the Municipal Corporation of Delhi got over at 7 p.m., Speaker Yoganand Shastri announced adjournment of the house sine die.

He congratulated Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and opposition leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra among MLAs and officials for the effective running of the house.

5 Bangladeshi nationals arrested with fake passports

Lucknow, August 23: Five Bangladeshi nationals were arrested Monday at the Chaudhary Charan Singh Airport here with fake passports, police said.

The five men, who are being interrogated by police and intelligence officials, had managed to get the fake passports from Kathmandu in Nepal.

“The five reached here today from Saudi Arabia on an Oman Airways flight,” Additional Director General (law and order) Brij Lal told reporters here.

Preliminary enquiry revealed that the five had travelled from Lucknow to Saudi Arabia on the same passports.

Police clueless as Israeli drug dealer goes ‘missing’

Panaji, August 24: Israeli drug dealer Yaniv Benaim alias Atala who was alleged to have links with Goa Home Minister Ravi Naik’s son has gone missing for more than a month, according to police Monday.

Atala, who was arrested in March along with seven other policemen during the drug mafia nexus investigation, had been released on bail in June.

Speaking to reporters, Deputy Superintendent of Police Chandrakant Salgaonkar said that Atala was last seen at the resort he was residing in July 9.
