Women held for robberies

Hyderabad, August 24 (Siasat News): The Habeebnagar police arrested 2 women burglars and recovered 66 tolas of gold, 1.14 kgs of silver ornaments and Rs. 70,000 from them.

The arrested women are Chemchu Laxmi, 25 and G Renuka, 45. They robbed the houses in S R Nagar, Panjagutta and Habeebnagar, the police said.

Gaza, August 24: Speaking at a mosque in Jabaliya, Haniyeh said that negotiations with Israeli would not restore the Palestinians’ rights or their occupied religious sites, Ma’an news agency reported.

Haniyeh also praised the steadfastness of the Palestinian people in the face of Israel’s blockade of the Gaza Strip, saying the Palestinians were a “model for the Arab nations and Islamic countries.”

‘Iran, Latin America ties a priority’

Tehran, August 24: President Ahmadinejad made the remarks at a meeting with the new Peruvian accredited ambassador to Iran, Javier Paolini Velarde, on Tuesday.

“There is a great potential for expansion of mutual ties (between Iran and Peru) which can be employed to the interests of the two nations,” ILNA quoted President Ahmadinejad as saying.

Ramalinga Raju appears before a local court

Hyderabad, August 24: B Ramalinga Raju, the tainted founder of Satyam Computer, today made a dramatic appearance before a local court, which is trying India’s largest corporate fraud running into about Rs 14,000 crore.

Raju, the prime accused in Satyam accounting fraud case, had been avoiding appearance in the court since September last year citing health reasons.

Raju, who was granted bail by the Andhra Pradesh High Court last week, was accompanied by his doctor.

Flight returns to airport due to engine problem

Thiruvananthapuram, August 24: A Dubai-bound flight of Emirates Airlines with 186 passengers onboard returned to the airport after take off this morning due to a problem in the aircraft”s engine.

Former Union Minister Shashi Tharoor and his wife Sunanda Pushkar were among the passengers onboard the flight, airport sources said.

The flight is expected to leave later in the day.

Mumbai, August 24: A lot has been spoken about the kiss between Pakhi Tyrewala and John Abraham in their upcoming movie, Jhootha Hi Sahi.

Turns out that the hype was needless, as the lead pair does not lock lips in the film after all. Though Pakhi was initially reluctant to share details about the much-hyped kiss, she gives in saying, “I think I should clarify that there is no kiss between me and John. Diamonds worth Rs 6.6 crore stolen from jewellery show

Mumbai, August 24: Six foreigners are under the scanner in connection with the theft of diamonds worth Rs 6.6 crore from an international jewellery exhibition here, police said.

The precious stones, which were kept in a box, belonged to an Israeli firm and were on display at the India International Jewellery Show (IIJS) organised at suburban Goregaon.

The incident came to light last evening when it was found that a box containing 887.24 carat diamonds was missing from the exhibition held under stringent security and surveillance, Additional Police Commissioner Ramrao Pawar told PTI.

Washington, August 24: Sohini Chatterjee, an Indian American lawyer involved in development work worldwide, has been appointed as Senior Advisor in the Office of Donor Engagement in the US Agency for International Development’s newly created Policy Planning Bureau.

Chatterjee will work closely with USAID administrator, Dr Rajiv Shah, the highest ranking Indian American in the Obama administration, and another Indian American, Nisha Desai Biswal, recently appointed as the Assistant Administrator for Asia in the agency.

14 feared dead in Nepal plane crash

Kathmandu, August 24: Fourteen people, including six foreigners, were feared killed when their small plane crashed in bad weather in Nepal on Tuesday, a government official said.

The Angi Air plane, returning to Kathmandu after failing to land in Lukla in eastern Nepal because of bad weather, crashed near the outskirts of the capital, Home (interior) Ministry official Jai Mukunda Khanal said.

Lukla is the gateway to Mount Everest.

”I have really worked hard for my position and fame. I don’t think I will lose it that easily. I have always devoted equal time and energy to Tollywood (Bengali film industry) because Bengal has always been my forte and it’s very important to me,” Rituparna told IANS in an interview here.

Several dead in Congress-CPI(M) clashes in WB

Kolkata, August 24: Four persons were Monday killed in a clash between CPI(M) and Congress supporters in Murshidabad district, police said here.

The supporters of the two parties clashed at Ghughupara under Islampur police station over the election of a school management committee, IGP (Law and Order) Surajit Kar Purakayastha said.

Three persons were detained for interrogation in this regard.

Egypt deputy minister detained over van Gogh painting theft

Cairo, August 24: Egypt’s top prosecutor ordered on Monday the detention of the deputy culture minister for four days in connection to the theft of a Vincent van Gogh painting, the state owned news agency reported.

Thieves made off with the canvas, known by the titles of “Poppy Flowers” and “Vase with Flowers,” on Saturday from the Mahmoud Khalil Museum in Cairo. None of the museum’s alarms and only seven of 43 surveillance cameras were working at the time of the robbery.

Another rainy day for Delhiites

New Delhi, August 24: Delhiites woke up to yet another rainy morning on Tuesday which brought with it attendant problems of waterlogging and traffic snarls in several areas.

The rain gauges measured 20.8 mm of showers for a period of 24 hours ending 8:30 am. The city received 4.8 mm of rains after 5:30 pm yesterday.

The Weather Office said the capital has received 670.3 mm of rains since July 5 when monsoon reached the capital.

Mexico’s Jimena Navarrete wins Miss Universe pageant

New York, August 24: Mexico’s Jimena Navarrete Tuesday won the Miss Universe beauty pageant held in Las Vegas.

Miss Jamaica Yendi Philipps was the first runner-up. The top five also included Miss Australia Jesinta Campbell, Miss Ukraine Anna Poslavska and Miss Philippines Venus Raj.

Navarrete received the Miss Universe crown from Stefania Fernandez, who won last year’s pageant representing Venezuela.

Eighty-three women were contesting for the title of Miss Universe.

Telugu film actresses arrested for prostitution, released

Hyderabad, August 24: Telugu film actresses Saira Banu and Jyoti and seven others were caught in a prostitution racket busted by Hyderabad police here Monday. The two were later released while the other seven were sent to judicial custody.

Saira, who played the lead role in a few Telugu films, and Jyoti, a supporting actress in many films, were arrested along with a woman from Uzbekistan and their customers from an apartment in the upscale Kundan Bagh neighbourhood.

Quit smoking for better sex life: Study

Hong Kong, August 24: Are u an active smoker? Giving up will improve better sex life, says a study from Hong Kong university.

The University found 53.8 per cent of smokers treated for erectile dysfunction were cured within six months when they quit nicotine habits.

“Men who quit early have a 91.5 per cent greater chance of a better sex life”, Sophia Chan, a professor who helped conduct the survey said.

She also said that erectile dysfunction was “very prevalent” in China and Asia and programmes to help smokers quit should be extended across the region.
