Gadkari denies rift between BJP and Nitish Kumar

Bhopal, August 26: BJP President Nitin Gadkari today said there was no rift between the party and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on the issue of Gujarat CM Narendra Modi campaigning in Bihar.

“I had very cordial talks with Nitish Kumar on the issue of Bihar elections and Modi. BJP will contest the polls along with JD(U) and there is no problem in it. Talks are on with regard to seat sharing in the poll-bound state,” Gadkari told reporters here.

Madani remanded to Judicial custody till September 7

Bangalore, August 26: PDP leader Abdul Nasser Madani was today remanded to judicial custody till September 7 in connection with the 2008 Bangalore serial blasts case.

Madani, whose police custody expired today since his arrest on August 17, was produced before First Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Venkatesh Hulagi.

The police claim the interrogation of Madani has revealed his role in the serial blasts that had taken place in parts of the city on July 25, 2008, in which a woman was killed and 20 others were injured.

Telangana Cong MPs attack Jagan

New Delhi, August 26: Attacking Y S Jaganmohan Reddy for his defiant attitude, Congress MPs from Telangana region today said people who go against party chief Sonia Gandhi and her directives have “no place” in the party.

Bringing to the fore fissures in the already divided Andhra Pradesh Congress unit yet again, the MPs, including those who were once considered close to Jagan, said they will always stand behind Sonia Gandhi and not by “any individual.”

Rahman to launch Delhi 2010 theme song on Saturday

New Delhi, August 26: After much delay, legendary music composer A R Rahman will unveil the theme song for the upcoming Commonwealth Games on Saturday.

The Delhi Games Organising Committee today said that the Oscar award winner music director will be performing the song “Oh yaaro, India bula liya” on Saturday. However, the venue for the event has not yet been finalised.

The song has been composed and sung by Rahman.

The launch of the song got delayed after the Group of Ministers (GoM) overseeing the October 3-14 megaevent asked Rahman to change it a little bit.

Chiranjeevi re-elected PRP president

Visakhapatnam, August 26: Amid jubilation of party functionaries, Chiranjeevi was today unanimously re-elected as President of Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) at the ongoing plenary of the regional outfit here.

The filmstar-turned-politician was the unanimous choice for the top PRP post with three sets of nominations being filed and seconded by several party leaders.

Palestinians torch cars in Jerusalem violence

Jerusalem, August 26: Palestinians torched half a dozen vehicles in East Jerusalem on Thursday and threw stones and firebombs at Israeli police after Jewish settlers approached a mosque, local residents and police said.

There were no reported injuries in the incident in the volatile Silwan neighbourhood, where tensions have flared between Palestinians and a small group of settlers who have moved there in the past two decades.

Local residents said settlers tried to reach a spring, which religious Jews view as a biblical site, by crossing through a mosque courtyard.

Head constable commits suicide in Police Academy

Raipur, August 26: A Chhattisgarh police head constable today committed suicide at Chandkhuri Police Training Academy here, police said.

Jaswant Uike (37), who was posted at Sarguja, had joined the Academy a couple of days ago for a special training. Jaswant, who had reported for the group exercise this morning, was later found hanging from the ceiling fan of his room. Police was investigating into the reason behind his suicide.

Virat Kohli fined 15 per cent of match fee

Sri Lanka, August 25: India batsman Virat Kohli has been fined 15 per cent of his match fee for showing dissent at umpire’s decision after being given out during the tri-nation ODI match against New Zealand in Dambulla.

Kohli pleaded guilty to a Level 1 offence and accepted the proposed sanction from Alan Hurst of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees after play concluded last night.

He was found to have breached 2.1.3 of the code which relates to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision.”

Sohrabuddin case: Top cop Johri appears before CBI

Gandhinagar, August 26: After ignoring two summons, Gujarat’s Rajkot town Police Commissioner Geetha Johri appeared before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) here on Thursday in connection with the 2005 staged killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh and the later elimination of his wife Kauserbi.

This is the second time that she is being questioned by the CBI, the first time being in March this year.

Ahmedabad, August 26: IPS officer Geetha Johri, who was probing the 2005 fake encounter case of Sohrabuddin Sheikh and killing of his wife Kausarbi, today appeared before the CBI for questioning. Johri reached the CBI office in the old secretariat campus around 10:30 AM.

The Central investigating agency had summoned the officer, who is currently posted as Commissioner of Rajkot, to appear on August 10, but Johri had then requested for more time as she had returned from a long leave.

PM wants ‘non-lethal ways’ in Kashmir, calls for task force

New Delhi, August 26: Calling for ‘non-lethal ways to manage protests’ in Kashmir, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Thursday asked the home minister to establish a ‘high-power task force’ to devise ways of controlling crowds. He also reached out to Maoists, renewing his offer for talks on the condition they abjure violence.

Addressing the 45th annual meet of the chiefs of state police and central security agencies, the prime minister said the situation in Kashmir was a ’cause of serious concern’ and called for devising ‘non-lethal ways to manage protests’.

78 years without water!

Bangalore, August 26: Could a woman who claims to have had no water for the last 78 years hold the solution to manage water shortage better? Unlikely, but what could be only termed as a miracle unless medical science proves otherwise, 92-year old Narasamma from Hanamant Nagar has been doing just that.

Kashmiris want ‘azadi’, not jobs, says BJP

New Delhi, August 26: Kashmiris are demanding secession from India and not jobs or economic development, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said Thursday and slammed the government for its failure to handle the unrest in the Kashmir Valley that has seen 64 people killed since June 11.

During a debate in the Lok Sabha on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi asked Home Minister P. Chidambaram to tell Kashmiris unambiguously that their demand of “azadi (freedom) or autonomy is not viable”.

‘What if US is seen as exporter of terrorism?’

Washington, August 26: Citing the case of Pakistani-American David Headley, a classified CIA document released by whistleblower organisation Wikileaks asks what would happen if foreign countries began to view the US as an “exporter of terrorism”.

The document prepared by the CIA’s “red cell”, a unit responsible for preparing analysis papers from an adversarial perspective, notes that a number of Americans have travelled overseas to commit violent acts, like Headley, who has pleaded guilty to conducting surveillance in support of the 26/11 Lashkar-i-Taiba (LeT) attack in Mumbai.

Police serve notice to Raj Thackeray

Mumbai, August 26: The city police today served a notice to
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray for his alleged
involvement in threatening to auto and taxi drivers.

”A notice under section 149 of the Criminal Procedure Code
(CrPC) was served to Raj Thackeray warning him against giving
any provocative or inflammatory speeches regarding his latest drive
against auto and taxi drivers,” said S R Unavane senior inspector
of Shivaji Park Police Station.

The notice refrains Thackeray from ”committing a cognizable
offence in future,” Unavane added.

London, August 26: Marriage seems to be bad for your sex life. Couples who have sex over four times a week before their wedding, barely have it once a week three years after tying the knot, a survey in Britain has found.

Researchers found that before marriage, couples can hope to have sex more than four times a week. But after three years of married life, there is a dramatic drop in their sex life and most couples have sex just once every seven days.

The survey was conducted among 3,000 married couple.

Sikkimese minor girl sold in Haryana brought back by CID

Gangtok, August 26: A 15-year-old girl from Lower Bardang in East Sikkim, who had been sold by a tout at Jharjar in Haryana, has been rescued and brought back to her home by the CID unit of Sikkim Police.

The girl was sent for medical examination to SNTM hospital and later handed over to her parents by the CID.

A CID team had gone to Jarjar last week to rescue the girl following a compliant lodged by her parents at Singtam police station against one Anita Biswakarma from Temi on July 23.

‘Sexual abuse in US immigration jails’

Washington, August 26: The Human Rights Watch (HRW) report, however, underlines that the actual number of abuse cases may be much higher since many victims get deported and denied the chance of filing complaints.

According to the report, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) “has refused to issue binding legal regulations to address problems with detention conditions.”

The language crisis in British schools

France, August 26: For the first time ever, French has slipped out of the top 10 of the most popular subjects at GCSE – the most obvious sign of the seemingly inexorable slide in languages take-up in schools, which employers say will damage British students on the international jobs market.

Fewer than one in four youngsters (22.7 per cent) now sits French, with the numbers falling from 341,604 students in 2002 to 177,618. This year alone, there was a further 5.9 per cent fall. German has slumped from 130,976 to 70,619.
