Singer who gave her lover HIV is spared jail

Germany, August 27: The German pop star Nadja Benaissa was handed a suspended two-year prison sentence yesterday for infecting her lover with HIV.

Benaissa, a singer in the band No Angels, had faced a maximum of 10 years in jail after she was found guilty of causing bodily harm to one man and attempted bodily harm to two others.

She admitted having unprotected sex while aware she was carrying HIV, but denied that she deliberately infected anyone. The court accepted she had shown remorse and that she did not believe she would pass on the virus.

Govt turns to Muslim MPs on Enemy Property Bill

New Delhi, August 27: Faced with the prospect of its ordinance lapsing, the government tonight scrambled to convene a meeting tomorrow of Muslim MPs from major parties to evolve a consensus on the Enemy Property (Amendment and Validation) Bill.

Sources said Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Bansal and Minority Affairs minister Salman Khursheed — he has also represented Amir Mohammad Khan, the “Raja of Mehmoodabad” who is at the centre of the controversy — will hold consultations tomorrow afternoon with Muslim MPs. Saudi cleric slammed over fatwa on women cashiers

Dubai, August 27: A conservative Saudi cleric was told to stop giving unauthorized edicts after he called for a boycott of a supermarket chain that employs women as cashiers, the office of the kingdom’s most senior religious leader said.

The move is the first public reprimand of a prominent cleric following a royal decree that limits the issuance of fatwas to the country’s most senior group of clerics. Fatwas are religious edicts that provide guidance in matters of everyday life to pious Muslims.

Gold medallist held for beating wife

Naples (Italy), August 27: A member of the Italian national water polo team that captured the gold medal at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona has been arrested in the southern city of Naples on suspicion of beating his wife, as well as other acts of abusive behaviour.

Francesco Porzio, 44, Wednesday allegedly kicked his wife in the face as she held their two-year-old child. Following the beating she barricaded herself in a closet and called the police for help.

247-kg woman’s big rescue

Bangkok, August 26: Overjoyed that she got to leave her flat for the first time in three years, 40-year-old Amnuayporn Thongprapai, who weighs 247 kilograms, said she was confident that doctors a Central General Hospital would help her walk again.

Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra, who was present while the woman was being helped out of her flat, said the Khan Na Yow district office had contacted the Social Development and Human Security Ministry asking that the woman be given a disability permit so she can be entitled to welfare benefits.

Major reshuffle in police, bureaucracy in J&K

Srinagar, August 26: Jammu and Kashmir government today carried out a major reshuffle in police and bureaucracy by replacing its Home Secretary Samuel Verghese and CID head K Rajendra.

The changes were cleared at a Cabinet meeting chaired by state Chief Minister Omar Abdullah here this evening.

Verghese, Financial Commissioner (Home), was shifted as Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Tribunal. He has been replaced by B R Sharma who held the post of Power Secretary.

Haj committee election upheld by court

New Delhi, August 26: The Delhi High Court has upheld the election of the office-bearers of Haj committee which coordinates the visit of Indian Muslims to the annual pilgrimage to Makkah and Madina in West Asia.

The Haj committee is administered by the ministry of external affairs under a parliamentary act. The ministry holds annual elections to the committee.

Toronto, August 27: An Al-Qaeda-linked terrorist plot in Canada unearthed Wednesday with the arrest two suspects has been traced back to Pakistan, Iran and Dubai even as police arrested another plotter Thursday.

Plane crash lands in California airport

Los Angeles, August 27: At least 15 people suffered minor injuries when a Jet Blue passenger aircraft crash landed at the Sacramento international airport in California Thursday, officials said.

A Jet Blue spokesman said the flight, carrying a total of 87 passengers and five crew members, reported an issue with the brakes. The plane blew two tyres while making the landing, Xinhua reported.

Airport spokeswoman Gina Swankie said all the people on board were evacuated via inflatable slides.

Another plane overshoots runway in China

Beijing, August 27: Another passenger plane overshot the runway during landing in a city in China but caused no casualties, just hours after an aircraft crashed killing 42 people and injuring 54, officials said.

The plane operated by Tianjin Airlines overshot the runway at the Wuyu International Airport in Nanning city in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Wednesday and slid on to the grassy patches. Several runway lights were broken but there were no reports of casualties or damages to the plane, officials said Thursday.

Abbas insists on resuming Israeli talks

Gaza, August 27: The remarks came after the PA police blocked a meeting by Palestinian parties opposed to direct talks with the Tel Aviv regime, with Abbas emphasizing on what he described as the “current opportunity to achieve peace.”

On Wednesday, over 200 PA police forces broke into a Ramallah hall where Palestinians opposed to the talks were meeting and started shouting slogans in favor of Mahmoud Abbas, accusing organizers of the summit of acting against Palestinians’ interests.
