Toxicity in toys no child’s play for Indian scientists

Hyderabad, August 01: Screening toys made in India and abroad for toxicity – as per the Supreme Court’s direction – is turning out to be easier said than done, as much of the estimated Rs.2,500 crore (over $535 million) market is unregulated, say scientists.

Experts from the National Institute of Occupational Health (NIOH), Ahmedabad, National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), Hyderabad, and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, have taken up the uphill task.

Mumbai local trains suspended on Harbour line

Mumabai, August 01: The suburban local train services on Mumbai-Harbour line came to a standstill on Sunday as a wall collapsed on railway track at Saunders station.

The daily commuters will face problems as Mumbai local services on Mumbai-Harbour line has been totally suspended.

The authorities have changed the routes of some trains while no trains are heading towards CST.

The wall collapsed due to heavy rain in the city.

3,000 people killed in Pak floods

Islamabad, August 01: As many as 3,000 people may have died in floods that have devastated Pakistan’s northwestern region, the local head of the country’s largest rescue service said.

Rescuers on Sunday were struggling to reach people in northwest Pakistan trapped by the worst floods in living memory which have killed more than 800 people so far.

A million people have been affected by the flooding, the United Nations said.

“The death toll could go as high as 3,000 because the level of destruction has been so great,” said Mujahid Khan, chief spokesman for Edhi rescue service.
