College students in sex-for-money exploits

Beijing, August 27: Media reported that a group of college and university students in Penang, including foreigners, have been selling their bodies for fast money and luxury items.

It said the students, some of whom were from China, Japan and South Korea, were involved in sex-for-money exploits after lecture hours and during the weekends. Their activities were said to have been controlled by a syndicate.

Penang Family Health Development Association said the students earned thousands of ringgit per month despite entertaining customers only on weekends.

39 temples on government land face demolition

Ranchi, August 27: As many as 39 temples constructed on government land in Ranchi district of Jharkhand have been issued notices asking why they should not be pulled down, an official said Friday.

Some of the temples are more than 50 to 60 years old where thousands of devotees pray every day.

The authorities of the temples were earlier this week asked to explain why the temples should not be demolished as they have been constructed on government land.

Not breaking defence ties with China, says Antony

Hyderabad, August 27: Defence Minister A.K. Antony Friday denied that India was breaking defence ties with China.

“It is not the question of breaking ties,” Antony told reporters on the sidelines of a programme at Mishra Dhatu Nigam Ltd (MIDHANI) here.

“There are occasional problems but that will not affect our broader approach,” he said.

The defence minister was commenting on reports in a section of media that New Delhi is planning to break defence ties with Bejing amid reports that China denied visa to a senior army commander responsible for Jammu and Kashmir.

Rain toll reaches 13 in Karnataka

Karnataka, August 27: With three more death in Bangalore on Friday, the toll in rain related incidents in Karnataka rose to 13 in past one week.

Three persons, two in Bellary and one in Raichur died in house collapses due to heavy rains, revenue officials said.

Two women were washed away in flash floods in Chincholi taluk in Gulbarga district on Thursday night. Bellary district accounted for the highest fatalities of four, followed by Gulbarga (3) and Dharwad, Shimoga, Raichur, Tumkur, Koppal and Bangalore one each so far, they said.

Two roads cave in, traffic diverted in Delhi

Delhi, August 27: With just 37 days left for the Commonwealth Games, portions of two more roads caved in on Friday morning in south Delhi, leading to traffic diversions in the area.

A portion of the road caved in between IIT and AIIMS while another stretch between MCD office and Petrol Pump in Yusuf Sarai also caved in.

“Vehicular movement has been restricted from IIT towards AIIMS as the road caved in. People were advised to take Africa Avenue Marg or August Kranti Marg to reach Ring Road,” a senior police official said.

SPS Rathore applies for Parole

Haryana, August 27: The Former Haryana police chief SPS Rathore on Friday applied for nearly two weeks parole for looking after crops in farmhouses.

Rathore was convicted for molesting teenager Ruchika Girihotra and currently lodged at the Burail jail.

Rathore, 68, was sentenced to 18 months rigorous imprisonment by the district and sessions court of Chandigarh after being convicted for molesting the teenager in 1990. She committed suicide three years later.

Two arrested for altering age in passport

Uttar Pradesh, August 27: Uttar Pradesh police arrested two persons Amausi airport in Lucknow for allegedly providing wrong information about their actual age in the passports.

Arshad Jamal of Jaunpur and Abdul Rahim Khan of Maharajganj were arrested when they were about to board the flight for Saudi Arabia on Thursday, police said, adding the immigration officials have registered an FIR with Sarojininagar police station for against the duo.

One more case of swine flu in Himachal

Himachal, August 27: The number of H1N1 cases in Himachal Pradesh reached to 10 this year, after a man has tested positive for swine flu.

“A middle-aged man from Mandi district tested positive for swine flu and was admitted to Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMCH) on Thursday,” Vinod Mehta, swine flu nodal officer said.

He said the patient, a truck driver by profession, had recently returned from Delhi.

This is the second case of swine flu in the state within a week. A 34-year-old man died in IGMCH Aug 19 due to the flu.

Yamuna still flows above danger mark

New Delhi, August 27: The threat of floods still visible over low lying areas in the national capital as the Yamuna River flowed above the danger mark.

“The water level in Yamuna is still at Thursday’s 205.77 metres,” an official at the Delhi flood control room said.

The river crossed the danger level of 204.8 late Friday night.

About 71,675 cusecs of water was released in the Yamuna from Hathnikund barrage upstream in Haryana Thursday morning but over one lakh cusecs was released in the Yamuna Barrage and Okhla Barrage.

Diarrhoea claims four lives in Orissa

Orissa, August 27: Four persons died and 98 patients have been hospitalised after being affected by diarrhoea in Orissa’s Kandhamal district.

Of the 98 people hospitalised, 11 are serious, official sources said.

The deaths were reported since last one week in five remote villages under Daringibadi public health centre, additional district medical officer (ADMO-Public Health), Jatin Patnaik said.

The disease had taken an epidemic form in Hatimunda village in Hatimunda GP where one person died and about 20 others were affected.

Deaf and dumb bike lifter arrested

Jaipur, August 27: Police arrested a deaf and dumb youth in Jaipur for allegedly stealing motorcycles.

“Banwari Lal (22), hailing from Phali town of the district, used to lift bikes and sell to his friends only on Rs 1,000 per bike who then used to sell the vehicle again,” SP Jaipur East Hawa Singh Ghumaria said, adding five bikes were from Lal’s possession.

Lal was arrested from Malvia Nagar area when he was about to lift another bike. The accused, who has studied upto 7th standard, used to contact his friends and strike deal through SMS, he said.

Man poisoned daughter to death

Madhurai, August 27: In a shocking case off honour killing, a man poisoned her daughter to death in Madurai, police said.

A father in Madurai allegedly injected his 18-year-old daughter with lethal substance for having too many boyfriends.

Madura police said that it is suspected to be a case of honour killing as the father of victim was upset over her too many boyfriends. However, the investigation into the matter is on.

SC allows HI to field team in CWG

New Delhi, August 27: The Supreme Court on Friday allowed the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and Hockey India (HI) to field the Indian team for men and women hockey in the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

“We direct as an interim measure that IOA and HI will field the Indian team for men and women hockey in the Commonwealth Games,” a Bench comprising R V Raveendran and H L Gokhale said.

The order was passed after Hockey India’s rival Indian Hockey Federation admitted that it was not affiliated to the International Hockey Federation (FIH).

RS adjourned as BJP, Shiv Sena protest over ”saffron terror”

Patna, August 27: Nowithstanding the claims of Union Home Minister P Chidambaram that ‘saffron terrorism’ was behind many bomb blasts across the country, the RJD yesterday accused the Congress of giving patronage to the right wing brigade.

Deputy leader of the state assembly Shakeel Ahmed Khan accused the Congress party of giving patronage to ‘saffron terrorism’ and no action was being taken against them even though they were out to break the secular fabric of the country.

SC reprieve for gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli

New Delhi, August 27: Gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli today got a reprieve with the Supreme Court upholding the quashing of MCOCA and other criminal cases registered against him by the Maharashtra government.

A bench of Justices P Sathasivam and B S Chauhan dismissed the state government’s appeal challenging the Bombay High Court’s decision to quash the FIR registered against the former MLA in connection with an extortion case.

The apex court said it found no basis to interfere with the decision of the Bombay High Court.

Muslims in British jails may launch terror strikes when freed

London, August 27: Some 800 Muslims lodged in British jails may have been turned by fellow inmates into fanatics ready to launch terror attacks, a media report said Friday.

An alarming report by defence experts warns that the security services face a “significant challenge” in spotting and keeping tabs on possible suicide bombers and other jihadists as they would be freed from prison over the next five to 10 years, Daily Express reported on its website.

Chopper crashed in Bangalore, pilot safe

Bangalore, August 27: A Chetak helicopter crashed at Rotary Wing Academy in Bangolaroe on Friday.

However, the pilot of the chopper was stated to be safe.

According to the sources, the mishap took place during training session at Rotary wing Academy.

Meanwhile, an inquiry has been ordered into the matter to probe the reason behind crash.

Further details are awaited.

The HAL Rotary Wing Academy, Bangalore was established in February 2000 for helicopter flying training of abinitio civil pilot trainees.
