London, August 03: Supermodel Gisele Bundchen has called for a “worldwide law” to ensure new mothers breastfeed their babies for six months after giving birth.

The 30-year-old became a first-time mother to baby Benjamin last year. She wants the US lawmakers to introduce a bill enforcing the practice to ensure newborns get the nutrients they need.

“I think there should be a worldwide law, in my opinion, that mothers should breastfeed their babies for six months,” contactmusic.com quoted her as saying.

40,000 Indians ‘disappear’ in Malaysia, visa on arrival scrapped

Kuala Lumpur, August 03: Malaysia revoked its visa on arrival (VOA) facility for Indians after 40,000 visitors from that country “abused” it and “disappeared”, Deputy Prime Minister Muhyideein Yassin has said.

The cases of Indians abusing the scheme topped the list of unauthorised immigrants from eight South Asian nations and China to whom the VOA was offered.

The facility has now been “scrapped permanently”, The Star newspaper reported Tuesday quoting the deputy prime minister.

Wife locks husband in laundry for 1 year

Paris, August 03: An elderly Frenchman has been released after being locked up for a year in the laundry room of his house in southwest of Paris.

French police rescued the unnamed 80-year-old man after his 45-year-old wife and her alleged lover locked, malnourished and physically abused him in his own home in the village of Arrou, media reported on Saturday.

The man is currently in hospital, recovering from a state of shock.

“The victim suffered violence and ill-treatment,” local gendarme commander Bruno Arviset told journalists.

Indian is Malaysia’s first woman mridhangam player

Kuala Lumpur, August 03: An ethnic Indian teenager in Malaysia has qualified as a mridhangam player, becoming the first woman to specialise in playing the traditional South Indian drum.

Arundhati Sekaran, 17, graduated from the local Indian music academy Sangeetha Swara Laya, affiliated to the Alagappa University in Tamil Nadu, India. The academy’s first convocation took place in Shah Alam near here Saturday.

She is a fifth form school student from Sungai Petani, Kedah state, Tamil Nesan newspaper reported.

SC declines to lift stay on Christian pilgrims to Jerusalem

New Delhi, August 03: The Supreme Court on Monday refused lift the status quo ordered by the Andhra Pradesh High Court on the government’s special scheme subsidizing pilgrimage by Christians to Jerusalem.

The Supreme Court, however asked the High Court to hear and dispose off the petition challenging the validity of the scheme announced by the government of former chief minister late YS Rajasekhara Reddy. The Apex Court also asked the High Court not to be influenced by its own observations in the interim order while disposing off the petition.

Babu seeks ban, white paper on iron ore exports

Hyderabad, August 03: Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu on Monday demanded that the government immediately ban all iron ore exports from the state. He also demanded that the government release a White Paper on all exports of iron ore from the state since the past six years.

Talking to media persons at the NTR Trust Bhavan, Mr Naidu said that Karnataka has banned export of iron ore after an estimated that 30 million tons was illegally exported from that State in the last few years.
