Engineering admission counselling to be delayed

Hyderabad, August 03: Counselling for engineering admissions is likely to be delayed further as the All India Technical Education Council (AICTE) is yet to communicate the final list of affiliated engineering colleges in the state to AP State Higher Education Council (APSCHE). Of the about 650 colleges that applied for renewal of affiliation, only 70 got clearance so far.

11 re-elected TRS MLAs take oath

Hyderabad, August 03: Legislative Assembly Speaker N Kiran Kumar Reddy administered the oath of office to the re-elected eleven Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) MLAs at his chambers in the Assembly today.

Before taking the oath the new MLAs paid rich floral tributes to Telangana martyrs at Gun Park opposite the Assembly. All of them, sporting pink kanduvas, reached the Assembly on foot from the Gun Park amid shouts of ‘Jai Telangana’ raised by their followers.

Traffic cop hangs himself after tiff with wife

Hyderabad, August 03: A traffic head constable of Cyberabad police today ended his life, reportedly due to family problems. Police said he had a tiff with his wife for coming home drunken, after attending the Bonalu festival on Sunday night.

The deceased, P Venkatesh (45) was working as a head constable in Uppal traffic police station.

He resided at Venkat Reddy Nagar in Ramanthapur along with his wife Vijaya Lakshmi and two daughters.

Venkatesh had gone to his relative’s house at Chilkalguda. He later attended the Mahankali Jatara and returned home in an inebriated condition.

Quota in legislatures: BC bodies plan demos

Hyderabad, August 03: Several BC organisations, including employees’ associations, in the state have decided to hold demonstrations in front of the Parliament on August 17 and 18 demanding 50 percent reservation for BCs in central and state legislatures. They would also demand reservation for BC employees in departmental promotions.

The decision was taken at a meeting held at BC Bhavan here today. Representatives of nearly 42 BC associations attended the meeting.

100 bars coming up; population no bar for City

The new development will be the result of a new policy the state government unveiled here on Monday. Babus claim it is intended to bring down the number of bars. N Korea vows retaliation over drills

Petition filed by woman SI over sexual harassment dismissed

Madurai, August 03: The Madras High Court bench today dismissed a petition filed by a policewoman, seeking action against three of her colleagues for alleged sexual harassment.

Justice M Jeyapaul, before whom the petition by the lady sub-inspector came up today, noted that the SP had ordered an enquiry, based on a complaint by her father against a constable, whom she had accused of behaving indecently with her. During the enquiry she had admitted that no sexual favours were demanded from her.

Amman, August 03: A young Iranian girl has received the top award at the 5th international Holy Quran competition for women held in the Jordanian capital of Amman.

Fatemeh Abduli was ranked first for memorizing 20 chapters of the Holy Quran in the 5th edition of Hashimiya International Quran Competition, IRNA reported on Monday.

The four-day contest which officially began on July 22 brought together women contestants from 30 countries.

After 62 years, Dhaka varsity to revoke Mujib’s expulsion

Dhaka, August 03: The Dhaka University is initiating steps to revoke an expulsion order issued 62 years ago against Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the man who later led the country’s freedom movement.

Then a student of the law faculty, Mujib led the strike by Class IV employees of the university for better pay and service conditions.

He was expelled May 19, 1948, Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), the official news agency reported.
