HC dismisses Madani’s anticipatory bail plea

Bangalore, August 03: The Karnataka High Court today dismissed the anticipatory bail plea of Abdul Naseer Madani in the 2008 Bangalore serial blasts case, observing that a prima facie has been made out against the Kerala-based People’s Democratic Party leader.

In his order, Justice N Ananda described the blasts as a ‘terrorist act’ and said he was rejecting the bail plea considering the seriousness of the offences committed by Madani, who is an accused.

No night movement of trains in Maoist-hit areas till Friday

Bhubaneswar, August 03: The restrictions on the movement of passengers trains during night in Maoist-affected areas of Orissa and West Bengal will continue till Aug 6, the East Coast Railway said here Tuesday.

“In view of security reasons, running of the passenger trains on Kharagpur-Rourkela and Kharagpur-Adra section will continue to remain suspended up to August 6 during the night hours from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m,” the railway said in a statement.

Sessions court frames charges against Vaiko

Chennai, August 03: A sessions court here today framed charges against MDMK leader Vaiko for various offences, including sedition, for his alleged inflammatory speeches supporting the banned LTTE two years ago.

Vaiko has been charged under Section 12(A) of the IPC (waging seditious war against the government) and under provisions of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.

HC stays arrest warrant against Preity Zinta, Ness Wadia

Chandigarh, August 03: In a relief to actress Priety Zinta, one of the owners of IPL franchise Kings XI Punjab, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today stayed the order of a lower court issuing bailable arrest warrant against her and two other co-owners for allegedly not filing its balance sheet and annual returns.

The order of the lower court, passed on July 24, was stayed by Justice Nirmaljit Kaur of the High Court till September 22.

Take action against officials adding fake voters: Left

New Delhi, August 03: The Left parties Tuesday asked the Election Commission to take action against the officials responsible for “inclusion of fictitious names” in voters’ lists in West Bengal.

A delegation of Left MPs led by Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Sitaram Yechury met the Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi and submitted a memorandum.

SI arrested for molesting woman subordinate

New Delhi, August 03: A police sub-inspector was arrested here for allegedly molesting a woman subordinate and showing her obscene MMS clips in a building which houses the DCP office as well as police station.

The alleged incident took place on Sunday in the building which houses the office of Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Sharad Aggarwal and Rajouri Garden police station, a senior police official said.

The woman assistant sub-inspector had gone her office on Sunday to complete some pending work and the accused SI Mukesh Chabra allegedly asked the woman personnel to meet him.

EC asks Jharkhand to probe Rajya Sabha bribery sting

New Delhi, August 03: The Election Commission Tuesday directed the Jharkhand government to register a police case after a media sting showed some state legislators ready to sell their votes in the Rajya Sabha elections in June.

In a statement, the poll panel said what the sting operation, conducted by an investigative portal, showed amounted to an offence under sections 8 and 9 of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Telgi sentenced to 5 year RI in fake stamp paper case

New Delhi, August 03: A Delhi court today sentenced fake stamp paper scam kingpin Abdul Karim Telgi to seven years rigorous imprisonment in a case relating to recovery such instruments in 2005.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate in Karkardooma courts here awarded the prison term to Telgi, who is afflicted with HIV virus and lodged at a Bangalore jail, and imposed on him a fine of Rs five lakh.

US-led coalition is losing Afghan war, says Zardari

Paris, August 03: Coalition forces are losing the war against the Taliban in Afghanistan, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari said in an interview published in France today.

“The international community, to which Pakistan belongs, is losing the war against the Taliban. This is above all because we have lost the battle to win hearts and minds,” he said, in comments published in French by Le Monde.

Zardari told the daily that the US and NATO-led coalition forces had “underestimated the situation on the ground” in Afghanistan, Pakistan’s war-torn western neighbour.

Shoot-at-sight orders in Srinagar, four dead in violence

Srinagar, August 03: Amid spiralling violence, shoot- at-sight orders were today issued by police in curfew-bound Srinagar as three more persons were killed in firing by security forces on violent protesters who defied restrictions and clashed with them in the Kashmir Valley.

The shoot-at-sight orders were announced through public address systems fitted in police vans in areas of Dal Gate, Residency Road and All India Radio Crossing in the city, police said.

Gold declines marginally on weak global cues

New Delhi, August 03: Gold shed Rs 15 to Rs 18,125 per ten grams in the capital today on profit selling by stockists amid a weak global trend.

However, silver remained in demand from industrial units and coin manufacturers and rose by Rs 300 to Rs 29,300 per kg.

Marketmen said profit-selling by stockists on expectations that the precious metal will lose more ground in the coming days and a weak global trend led to a fall in the gold prices.

They said subdued demand at existing higher levels also influenced the gold prices.

Congress leaders soften stand on Muraleedharan

Thrissur, August 03: In an apparent softening of stand towards K Muraleedharan, son of veteran Congress leader K Karunakaran, who was expelled from the party, Congress in Kerala today said it would welcome help “from any quarters” during the upcoming local bodies polls.

Bill to amend NDMC Act introduced in Lok Sabha

New Delhi, August 03: A bill to give local representatives under New Delhi Municipal Council area more say in the civic body was introduced in the Lok Sabha today.

Minister of State for Home M Ramachandran introduced the bill seeking to amend the New Delhi Municipal Council Act, 1994.

The bill relates to changes in the composition of the NDMC by making the MP of the area its member with voting right and provides for increasing the number of members from 11 to 12.

It also provides for raising the number of representatives belonging to the scheduled castes from one now to two.

Airlines to compensate delays, cancellations: Praful

New Delhi, August 03: Airlines will soon have to compensate passengers for delaying/cancelling flights or denying them boarding passes, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha today.

In what is seen as a move to protect the interests of passengers, the minister said that the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is in the process of finalising a Civil Aviation Rule (CAR), and the comments received on the draft CAR are being compiled.

Ahmadinejad: Obama, capitalist pawn

Tehran, August 03: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has denounced the US administration for failing to implement the policy of change, saying capitalism in the US is nearing its end.

“US President Barack Obama was brought to power to salvage the capitalist system,” Ahmadinejad said in an address to directors and producers of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) on Tuesday.

The Iranian chief executive said that although Obama came to power with an emphasis that the wrong US policies should be reformed, he has failed to put into action his promises of change.

London, August 03: Muslim women should have the right to choose to wear the burqa, Conservative Party chairperson Sayeeda Warsi has said. “Just because a woman wears the burqa, it doesn’t mean she can’t engage in everyday life,” she says.

Warsi, the first Muslim woman to serve in the cabinet, defended the burqa Monday.

Eviction Of Encroachments At Chintalbasti Leads To Tension

Hyderabad, August 03: The evicting of encroachments on the footpaths at Chintala basti area in the
city led to some tense moments this morning.

As the personnel of the GHMC geared up to remove the encroachments, local corporator Sultana tried to obstruct them, leading to a heated argument between them. After discussions with the Corporator, the GHMC authorities agreed to give half an hour time to the encroachers to evict the place. Afterwards, policemen in large numbers reached the spot. The officials later completed the eviction peacefully.

Four More Swine Flu Cases Regeistered

Hyderabad, August 03: Four more cases of Swine flu were registered in the State on Monday. Two cases were registered at the Rainbow hospital in Hyderabad, one in Nampally area hospital and one at the Vizayanagaram district.

The Co- ordinator of Swine flu, Dr Shubhakar said that now the total number of people affected by Swine flu has reached 169 in the State. He cautioned the people to be alert in the wake of spread of this menace.
