More than 2000 see first show of ‘Zayed and the Dream’ in London

London, August 04: In a full house stage, the first show of the musical historical play “Zayed and the Dream” was shown Sunday at London Coliseum.

The 2360 seats of London’s oldest theatre were fully booked by Arab community members in England in addition to English and European play lovers in Briton.

The play produced by Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH) in coordination with renowned Lebanese Caracalla Dance Theatre.

Tehran, August 04: Iranian officials lashed out on Tuesday at remarks by the top US military chief that Washington had a plan to attack Tehran, saying the US would suffer a defeat worse than in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, said on Sunday the United States has drawn up the plan to prevent Iran getting nuclear weapons, but was “extremely concerned” about the upshot of any such attack.

CBI demand for Shah remand rejected

Ahmedabad, August 04: A CBI court Wednesday rejected the agency’s demand for a seven-day custody of former Gujarat minister Amit Shah, arrested for the 2005 killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh.

Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) special judge A.I. Raval’s ruling stunned the agency. “The CBI may challenge the decision. The CBI may go to the high court,” a source in CBI told IANS.

The CBI had July 23 produced a 3,000-page chargesheet and accused Shah of murder, abduction and conspiracy in the case of alleged staged shootout.

Shah has been in judicial custody since July 25.

Lebanese troops, Israeli officer killed in border clashes

Lebanon, August 04: Lebanese and Israeli troops traded fire Tuesday along their tense border in the fiercest clashes since a 2006 war, with two Lebanese soldiers, a journalist and a senior Israeli officer killed.

Each side blamed the other for causing the fight, with the Lebanese army acknowledging that it fired first.

A statement by the Lebanese army said troops opened fire on the Israelis after “a patrol crossed the technical (border) fence.”

The 25-year-old doctor killed her 24-year-old boyfriend in a hotel room in China after giving him sleeping pills.

It was reported that the doctor put the body parts in two big suitcases and called a taxi to send the bags to an abandoned house, where the parts were later buried.

Chidambaram to announce concession for J-K

Mumbai, August 04: Union Home Minister P Chidambaram is likely to announce some soft measures for Jammu and Kashmir when he makes a statement in parliament on Wednesday, an informed source said.

The discussions were held on Monday and Tuesday and more would be held on Wednesday before Chidambaram’s statement in parliament.

Some of the discussions included central government’s actions to restore peace and order in the state, said the source, who is in know of what may form the core of the statement.

Rupee down 12 paise in early trade

New Delhi, August 04: The rupee today depreciated by 12 paise against the dollar in early trade due to demand for the US currency from importers.

At the Interbank Foreign Exchange market, the domestic unit was quoted 12 paise lower at 46.28 a dollar. The rupee had closed higher by 8 paise at 46.16/17 a dollar in the previous session.

Dealers said demand for the dollar from importers weighed on the rupee. Early gains on the equity market, however, capped losses.

The Bombay Stock Exchange index, Sensex, rose by 57.28 points, or 0.30 per cent, to 18,172.11 points in opening trade.

Sensex open 57 points up

Mumbai, August 04: The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex opened higher by 57 points today on buying in IT stocks led by Infosys.

The 30-share index rose by 57.28 points, or 0.30 per cent, to 18,172.11 points.

Similarly, the broad-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty gained 13.70 points, or 0.23 per cent, to trade at 5,453.25 points.

Brokers said increased buying by funds and retail investors in heavyweight stocks, particularly technology companies, influenced the trading sentiment.

Solar tsunami to hit earth anytime

New York, August 04: Scientists have warned that a solar tsunami is likely to hit the Earth anytime this weekend.

Solar Tsunami is an unusually complex magnetic eruption on the Sun. Scientists have feared that a large cloud of electrically charged particles due to solar tsunami could hit the earth.

According to the pictures received from NASA’s new Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), a solar blaze, comparable to the size of the earth, erupting above sunspot.

Solar Tsunami, also called a coronal mass ejection, was directly aimed towards earth.

Last day to file income tax return

New Delhi, August 04: The last date for filing the Income Tax Return (ITR) for the financial year 2009-10 is August 4.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) on Saturday, extended the deadline for filing of income-tax returns. The CBDT took this decision due to by some technical snags in the e-filing system and also due to the bad weather in Delhi and around.

US imposes sanctions on 21 ‘Iran-backed’ firms

Washington, August 04: The United States today imposed sanctions on 21 firms it believes are front companies for the Iranian government, stepping up pressure on the Islamic republic over its nuclear programme.

Accusing Tehran of trying to dodge sanctions by setting up opaque trading companies, the Treasury Department named a host of banking, mining and other companies spread throughout Europe and Japan as government-backed.
