Over 50 percent Bihar girls marry before they are 18

Patna, August 04: Bihar is one of the hotspots of child marriage in India as 51 percent girls there are married even before they are 18 years of age, officials said here Wednesday.

“Fifty-one percent of girls are married before they are 18 in Bihar,” said N. Vijaya Lakshmi, managing director of the Women Development Corporation of the state government.

In her welcome address at a day-long workshop on the prevention of child marriage in Bihar, she said the mean age at marriage for girls is 17.4 in the state as against 19.5 for the country.

Another woman dies of swine flu in Andhra

Hyderabad, August 04: Another pregnant woman died of swine flu in Andhra Pradesh Wednesday, taking the toll to 18 since June this year.

The woman died at King George Hospital in coastal city of Visakhapatanam. She was undergoing treatment at the hospital for the last few days and was from Araku valley, doctors said.

Two women have died of the virus in as many days. Nine of the 18 dead so far have been pregnant women. This is the fourth death due to swine flu in Visakhapatnam during the last one-and-half months.

36 civilians killed, 1266 security men injured in J-K in 3 mns

New Delhi, August 04: Government today said 36 civilians were killed and 1,266 security personnel were injured in different violent incidents in the Kashmir Valley in the last three months. “Between June 11 and August 2, 36 civilian deaths were reported.

1,266 were injured among security forces,” Minister of State for Home Ajay Maken informed Rajya Sabha in a written reply to a question. During June and July, 872 stone pelting incidents were reported in the Valley, he said.

Encounter between Maoists and police on in Chhattisgarh

Raipur, August 04: Security forces today launched a major operation at a Naxal hideout in the dense forests of Chhattisgarh”s Dantewada district where heavily-armed Maoists fired at them but there were no immediate reports of casualties. There was fierce exchange of fire in the operation which started around noon and was continuing till late in the afternoon.

75 Chhattisgarh cops missing after gun battle with Maoists

Raipur, August 04: About 75 police personnel were Wednesday reported missing after a “major” gun battle with heavily armed Maoists in a forest in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada area, officials said.

The gunfight began when Maoists attacked a search party of the state police in a thickly forested area of Gumiapal, close to Kirandul, about 420 km south of capital Raipur, an iron ore mining facility of India’s top iron ore producer NMDC Ltd.

“About 75 police personnel are missing,” a source at the police headquarters here said.

Iran president escapes attack

Tehran, August 04: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad escaped an assassination attempt Wednesday when a blast hit one of the vehicles of his cavalcade, a media report said. Iran’s Press TV, however, denied the report.

Al Arabiya TV reported the blast took place in the western city of Hamadan as the president was about to address a crowd. The attacker was arrested on the spot.

The bomb hit a car carrying journalists and presidential staff, Al Arabiya cited its own sources as saying.

No support for Modi in rescuing his friend: VHP

70 Muslim homes looted & burned police watched on

Jaipur, August 04: In a planned attack on Muslim families in Udaipur following murder of a person from the Meena community, at least 70 homes of Muslims were looted and then put on fire in the very presence of Police and civil administration of the district.

The incident took place in the last week of this past July leaving at least 500 Muslim families homeless in about half a dozen villages of Udaipur district in Rajasthan that is presently ruled by Congress.

Makkah Masjid Blast Key Accused Arrested?

Jaipur, August 04: The Rajasthan anti-terrorist squad (ATS) on Tuesday is said to have nabbed a key accused involved in Makkah Masjid and Ajmer dargah blast Ramji Kalsangra from Indore in Madhya Pradesh.

Ramji, who is wanted in other blast cases, including those at Makkah Masjid in Hyderabad and Malegaon, was on the run since his name came up during interrogation of other accused – Devendra Gupta, Lokesh Sharma and Chandrashekhar Barod – arrested earlier by Rajasthan ATS.

No ATS officer from Rajasthan confirmed the reports of Ramji’s arrest, claiming them to be “just rumors”.

Rights groups sue US over cleric‎

Washington, August 04: Two civil rights groups are suing the US to try to get a licence to represent the father of Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki in a case against the CIA.

Nasser al-Awlaki contacted the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) in July when his US-born son appeared on a CIA “capture or kill” list.

The US then labelled Anwar al-Awlaki a “specially designated global terrorist” – making it illegal to serve as lawyers for his benefit without a licence.

That has delayed his father’s case.

Makkah Masjid, Ajmer RSS bomber held in Indore

New Delhi, August 04: Ramachandra Kalsangra, an RSS sympathiser, is believed to have been picked up by the investigating agencies for his alleged involvement in the blasts in Rajasthan’s Ajmer Sharif and Hyderabad’s Mecca Masjid in 2007.

Intelligence sources said he was picked up by the investigating agencies a couple of days ago from Indore in Madhya Pradesh, which incidentally also happens to be his native place.

Rights groups sue US over cleric‎

Washington, August 04: Two human rights groups accused the Obama administration of trying block their efforts to serve as lawyers for the father of a U.S.-born Muslim cleric who wants to challenge a U.S. order to capture or kill his son.

The Center for Constitutional Rights and the American Civil Liberties Union said they agreed to pursue the case in July at the request of the father of Anwar al-Awlaki, a cleric born in New Mexico.

Gaza children set for second world record in just a week

Gaza, August 04: Thousands of children in Gaza attending Summer Games organized by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) appear to have doubled their own world record for the number of kites flown simultaneously. The world record breaker took place on a beach in northern Gaza in the same location where they set the world record just one year ago. UNRWA sources say the unofficial figure for the number of kites flown is over seven thousand two hundred.

Andhra’s interests not compromised on Babhali: Rosaiah

Hyderabad, August 04: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K. Rosaiah Tuesday denied that he compromised the interests of the state on the Babhali barrage dispute during a meeting with his Maharashtra counterpart in the presence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Addressing a news conference here Tuesday evening, he said Andhra Pradesh would continue to pursue the contempt of court case filed in the Supreme Court against Maharashtra for not abiding by its interim order.

Lok Sabha adjourned over Babhali barrage row

New Delhi, August 04: The Lok Sabha was adjourned Wednesday for half-an-hour following protests by the members of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the Shiva Sena over the Babhali dam dispute over the Godavari river.

As the house convened at 11 a.m., the TDP members came near Speaker Meira Kumar’s podium shouting slogans over the issue.

The enraged Shiv Sena members also started the protest, forcing the speaker to adjourn the house till 11.30 a.m.

Iran officials slam US admiral’s attack plan remarks

Tehran, August 04: Iranian officials lashed out on Tuesday at remarks by the top US military chief that Washington had a plan to attack Tehran, saying the US would suffer a defeat worse than in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, said on Sunday the United States has drawn up the plan to prevent Iran getting nuclear weapons, but was “extremely concerned” about the upshot of any such attack.
