Beckham planing to open pub

Washington, August 05: Footballer David Beckham and telly chef Gordon Ramsay are planning to open their own pub in Los Angeles.

And they might even call it The Queen Vic, after David’s wife Victoria, reports dailystar.co.uk.

David and Gordon have been close pals for many years and being regulars on the LA scene, the pair felt it was the best location because a string of expats live in the area.

A pal of David, 35, said: “He wants pie and mash, fish and chips and even chicken in a basket on the menu, just like the meals he eats when he’s in the Britain.”

Virender Sehwag hits 21st ton

Sri Lanka, August 05: Blazing Virender Sehwag smashed career’s 21st Test on the third day of final Test against Sri Lanka at P Sara Oval stadium in Colombo on Thursday.

Sehwag completed his ton in just 90 deliveries with 18 fours. The Indian Opener missed a ton in the second Test as he was dismissed fro 99 runs.

Sehwag was also toppled by Sri Lanka skipper Kumara Sangakkara from No.1 Test player in ICC rankings. Sangakkara smashed double hundred in the same match.

Jennifer Hudson to revamp her looks

London, August 05: Singer-actress Jennifer Hudson is contemplating a drastic makeover by shaving off her hair to revamp her look.

The “Dreamgirls” star has sported long locks for the past few months but she admits she is looking to revamp her look and is keen on a much shorter hairdo, web media reports.

“I am actually thinking about shaving my head. Because I feel I have got a good bone structure,” said Hudson.

Obama vows to fight India, China for new jobs

Washington, August 05: US President Barack Obama has vowed to give tough competition to India and China for millions of potential jobs in the American clean energy industry, once again raising the bugaboo of outsourcing.

“For generations, manufacturing was the ticket to a better life for the American worker,” he said at a meeting here Wednesday of the AFL-CIO Executive Council, America’s union movement.

“But as the world became smaller, outsourcing, an easier way to increase profits, a lot of those jobs shifted to low-wage nations.”

Kaneria vows to make a return in Pak side

Karachi, August 05: Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria has vowed to fight his way back into the national team after being released to join county side Essex ahead of their second Test against England at Edgbaston, which starts on Friday.

Kaneria was released from the touring squad in England after Pakistan suffered a humiliating 354-run first Test defeat at Trent Bridge on Sunday.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced that the tour selection committee has agreed to allow Kaneria to play for his county, Essex.

Sensex up 65 pts in opening trade

Mumbai, August 05: The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex today opened higher by 65 points on buying by funds and retail investors driven by firming global trends.

The 30-share index rose by 65.87 points, or 0.36 per cent, to 18,283.31 points. The barometer had gained nearly 350 points in the previous three sessions.

The wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty also surged by 16.55 points, or 0.20 per cent, to 5,484.40 points.

Earthquake shakes Papua New Guinea

Guinea, August 05: An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale rocked Papua New Guinea on Thursday morning, but there was no tsunami threat, Indonesia’s Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said.

The quake hit the region at 5.01 a.m. (2201 GMT Wednesday) with the epicentre at 549 km northeast of Port Moresby and at a depth at 74 km, web media reported.

Policeman appears before CBI in Sohrabuddin case

Gandhinagar, August 05: O.P. Mathur, former additional director general of police, appeared before the CBI Thursday for questioning in connection with the 2005 Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake shootout case.

Mathur was head of the state CID (Crime) department which was heading the investigation into the case before the Supreme Court handed it over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Mathur had been issued summons to appear before the CBI.

He was subsequently Ahmedabad police commissioner and retired from the post. He is presently in charge of the newly-set up Raksha University.

No Go Issued On 3 Month Ration Supply, Says Minister

Hyderabad, August 05: Denying news reports that appeared in a vernacular daily stating that the government issued orders to introduce ration supply once three months under Public Distribution System, the Minister for Civil Supplies, Mr Jupalli Krishna Rao, on Wednesday clarified that no such GO was issued, but only circulars have been issued to the district Collectors and district Civil Supplies Officers to send their views whether such a system would benefit the people and the government.

Sohrabuddin’s brother wants to appear in Shah bail plea

Ahmedabad, August 05: Rubabuddin Sheikh, brother of Soharabuddin Sheikh killed in a staged shooutout in 2005, has sought permission from a court to participate in the proceedings on the bail plea filed by former Gujarat minister Amit Shah.

Shah was arrested July 25 by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with Sheikh’s killing.

In a petition before special CBI Court Judge G.K. Upadhyaya, Rubabuddin said that granting bail to Shah would be against the principles of justice.

Life term for 3 in ‘honour’ killing case: SC

New Delhi, August 05: The Supreme Court on Wednesday awarded life sentence to three persons who caused the death of six persons of a family in a case of ‘honour’ killing at a village in Uttar Pradesh in 1991.

A Bench of Justices H.S. Bedi and J.M. Panchal reversed the order of acquittal passed by the Allahabad High Court after the trial court handed them the death sentence.
