Two more die in Srinagar

Srinagar, August 05: Two more deaths of civilians in Srinagar on Wednesday, increased the death toll in the violence hit Kashmir valley to 46 since June 11.

The latest victim, identified as Mohammed Yaqoob, 27, was killed late Wednesday in alleged firing by security forces in Nundrishi colony in Srinagar’s Bemina area.

Protests erupted in the area following the man’s death, officials said.

Earlier in the day, 17-year-old Iqbal Ahmad Khan succumbed to bullet injuries in a hospital here.

Istanbul, August 05: Imagine swiping a mobile phone to pay for all the things that you buy! This has just been made possible by latest technology that allows bank information to be stored in your mobile phones’ memory cards.

Global credit card giant Visa has entered a partnership with a Turkish bank to launch this technology, the first of its kind in Europe.

This technology is used to store bank information in memory cards placed in mobile phones and allow them to be waved in front of credit card payment points, Visa Europe, which has collaborated with Turkey’s Akbank, said.

DU student raped in a moving car

New Delhi, August 05: In a shocking incident, a Delhi University (DU) student was abducted and later raped by a middle-aged man near Bali Nagar locality of the national capital on Wednesday evening.

According to the police, the 17-year-old student was abducted from the college gate in Janakpuri by accused Mukesh Sehgal on Wednesday.

The 50-year-old Mukesh raped her in a WagonR car, which had tinted glass, near Bali Nagar area of the Capital, police said.

The victim was admitted to Pt Deen Dayal Upadhya Hospital, where medical report confirmed rape.

Swine flu clams one life in Lucknow

Uttar Pradesh, August 05: A 38-year-old man died of swine flu in this Uttar Pradesh capital on Wednesday, an official said.

Ram Shanker died at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), where he was admitted Tuesday.

Shanker was a native of Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur district and had arrived in Lucknow two days ago. He was staying at his brother’s place in the Jankipuram locality.

In an attempt to control the spread of the virus, a team of health officials visited the residence of Shanker’s brother but could not find anyone there.

Muslim College Opens in US With Hopes

California, August 05: Zaytuna College is a new four-year college in Berkeley, California. Zaytuna is seeking to become the first accredited Muslim college in the United States. The name comes from the Arabic word for olives.

The process of full accreditation could take several years. That will make it easier for students to get financial aid, and to have their education recognized by employers and other schools.

DMRC to build Jaipur Metro

Jaipur, August 05: Taking up its first independent project outside the national capital, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has agreed to the Rajasthan government’s proposal to construct a Metro rail in Jaipur, an official said on Wednesday.

A DMRC spokesperson said that an agreement to this effect will be signed on Thursday in Jaipur where Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and DMRC chief E. Sreedharan will be present.

Haryana cop arrested for taking bribe

Haryana, August 05: The Delhi Police on Wednesday arrested an inspector of Haryana’s traffic police for taking a bribe of Rs.14,000, an officer said.

According to the police, the accused was identified as Sat Narain Singh and he was caught red handed by a special team of Delhi police while accepting Rs.14,000 from a transporter near Ghevra turn, at the border of Delhi and Haryana, around 40 km from here.

Four Maoists arrested in J’khand

Jharkhand, August 05: Jharkhand police have arrested four Maoists including a top Maoist leader carrying a reward of Rs.5 lakh on Wednesday.

According to police sources, Rajesh alias Udayji a Jharkhand-Bihar Special Area Committee member of the outlawed Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) was arrested from Shams Kunj apartments in Bardaman compound colony.

Two more people wanted in more than a dozen cases were arrested along with Udayji.

In another development the police arrested Lalan Singh Kharwar an area commander of CPI-Maoist from Betha village of Garwah district.

Pleasant weather continues in Delhi

New Delhi, August 05: Delhiites woke up with a pleasant but gloomy morning on Thursday. The weather officials are predicting rainfall later in the day.

Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 27.5 degrees Celsius which is normal for this time of the season.

An official of the India Meteorological Department said that skies will remain cloudy with one or two spells of rain in some parts of the city. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 30 degrees Celsius.

Bus knocks 5-year-old boy dead

Hyderabad, August 05: A five-year-old boy was killed on the spot after being hit by a school bus at Nagole area in Hyderabad on Wednesday, police said.

The incident occurred at about 4 pm, when the boy, a first standard student of a private school, got down from the bus and was crossing the road to reach his home at Nuvalbanda locality (under Nagole area) when the school bus hit him resulting in severe head injuries and instant death, they said.

TV actress, family beaten up

Madhya Pradesh, August 05: A television actress and her parents on Wednesday were beaten up by her alleged boyfriend and his friends in Bhopal district in Madhya Pradesh.

Sehrish, who works in the television serial ‘Pratigya’, was beaten up by her alleged boyfriend Jahangir and his friends for rejecting his repeated advances.

Breast-feeding could save 37,000 babies in a year in Bangladesh

Dhaka, August 05: The lives of nearly 37,000 babies in Bangladesh in a year would be possibly saved by starting breast-feeding within an hour of birth, the government said Wednesday.

Referring to a report of ‘Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey’, Health and Welfare Minister AFM Ruhal Haque said this while addressing a function marking the World Breast-feeding Week-2010 here, Xinhua reported.

He said every year about 120,000 newborns die in Bangladesh within 28 days of their birth due to malnutrition.

Miraculous escape for Sharad Yadav

Patna, August 05: It was a miraculous escape for former union minister and JDU leader Sharad Yadav when his helicopter made an emergency landing in a field near Patna bypass on Thursday morning.

According to the report, the chopper, carrying Sharad Yadav and four others, made emergency landing after the chopper developed some technical snag.

However, Sharad Yadav along with others have been reported safe.

Sharad Yadav was on his way to Madhepura from Patna to attend a public rally when the leader escaped unhurt.

Kaneria vows to make a return in Pak side

Karachi, August 05: Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria has vowed to fight his way back into the national team after being released to join county side Essex ahead of their second Test against England at Edgbaston, which starts on Friday.

Kaneria was released from the touring squad in England after Pakistan suffered a humiliating 354-run first Test defeat at Trent Bridge on Sunday.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced that the tour selection committee has agreed to allow Kaneria to play for his county, Essex.

Fire breaks out in Chicago plane

Chicago, August 05: Passengers on a plane at Chicago’s O’Hare international airport were evacuated after fire broke out in the plane’s landing gear.

There were 188 passengers and 11 crew members on board the United Airlines Flight 949 from London’s Heathrow airport, airlines spokesman Mike Trevino was quoted as saying Wednesday by the Herald Sun.

Several people who exited the plane on emergency slides were being treated for minor injuries, Chicago fire department spokesman Larry Langford said.

Rupee down 7 paise in early trade

New Delhi, August 05: The rupee today down by 7 paise against the dollar in early trade weighed down by the US currency’s gain overseas.

At the Interbank Foreign Exchange market, the domestic unit was quoted 7 paise lower at 46.23 a dollar. The rupee had settled steady at 46.16/17 a dollar in the previous session.

Dealers said firming dollar against other currencies after stronger-than-expected US employment and service sector data put pressure on the rupee but higher opening on the stock market, capped losses.

RSS intervenes to rein in Karnataka’s Reddy brothers
