India to expand railway connectivity with Bangladesh

Agartala, August 05: India will extend its railway network to two more places along the India-Bangladesh border to improve connectivity between the two countries, a railway official announced Thursday.

The two places are Sabroom in southern Tripura, 135 km from Agartala, and Akhaurah in western Tripura, just 6 km from the Agartala railway station – the newest station of the Indian railways, coming on the country’s rail map in October 2008.

34 villagers fell ill due to poisonous gas leak in China

Beijing, August 05: At least 34 villagers fell ill following a poisonous gas leak from a chemical plant in south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Titanium tetrachloride, a gas with pungent odor, leaked from Guinan Titanium Co Ltd in Daoshui Township of Wuzhou City on Tuesday, when the workers were cleaning the equipment, a statement from the city government said.

34 people in the nearby Fuwan Village were rushed to the town’s hospital after inhaling the gas, Xinhua newsagency reported.

S Korea kicks off military drill despite threats

Seoul, August 05: South Korea on Thursday launched its largest-ever anti-submarine exercise including live-fire training near the disputed sea border with North Korea, despite Pyongyang’s threats of retaliation.

The South has warned the North it will not tolerate provocations during the five-day naval drill in the Yellow Sea, being staged in response to what it says was a deadly North Korean torpedo attack on a warship.

Mosque targeted in arson attack

Berlin, August 05: A mosque in Berlin became the target of an arson attack, however no one was harmed, a local Berlin television station quoted police as saying.

Employees of the mosque in Berlin’s predominantly Muslim immigrant district of Neukoelln detected a fire in a building next to the mosque Sunday morning and alarmed police.

The fire which eventually extinguished itself, was reportedly lit in front of a basement window.

Authorities have begun their investigation of the arson attack.

Fourteen missing Bangladeshi fishermen in Indian jail

Dhaka, August 05: India and Bangladesh are working to repatriate 14 Bangladeshi fishermen who were washed into Indian shores after a cyclone in 2007 and were then jailed.

Hailing from Pathorghata in southern Barguna district, the fishermen were in mid-sea when Cyclone Sidr hit them. They are reportedly in a jail in Orissa, The Daily Star said Thursday.

A message from the Indian High Commission here reached the Pathorghata police station Monday.

Over 300 fishermen from Barguna district are missing since Cyclone Sidr hit the coastal region Nov 15, 2007.

Advani meets PM, discusses Kashmir situation

New Delhi, August 05: Senior BJP leader LK Advani along with a delegation of party MLAs from Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to discuss the prevailing situation in the Valley and demanded that the Centre should intervene to restore normalcy.

The delegation expressed its opposition to the proposed political package for the state which was discussed between the Centre and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

“It would be akin to rewarding the separatists and those creating trouble in the state,” a BJP leader said.

Islamic court judges get full power

Kuala Lumpur, August 05: Malaysia’s first female Islamic court judges have been granted powers equal to their male counterparts after fears were raised that curbs would be imposed on their authority, an official said on Thursday.

The government appointed two women as sharia judges in May but activists have questioned whether the country was really ready to empower women after a panel of judges tasked with deciding their powers said they could be barred from ruling on marriage and divorce.

Swine flu on the rampage; toll rises to 20

Hyderabad, August 05: The dreaded “swine flu”, a viral disease, is on the rampage in the State once again.

According to latest reports, 17 nursing students, suffering from swine flu symptoms, were being treated in the Gandhi Hospital in Secunderabad. The condition of three students is stated to be causing anxiety.

However, their blood samples have been sent to the Chest Hospital at Erragadda for medical analysis. The nursing students have complained that they were not being looked after well by the medical staff concerned in the hospital.

Flight from London in ‘accident’ at Zimbabwe airport

Harare, August 05: Ambulances rushed to Harare international airport Thursday after a Boeing 767 on a flight from London was involved in an accident while landing, aviation officials and witnesses said.

“I can confirm that a 767 plane coming from London has had an accident at Harare airport,” David Chawota, the head of Zimbabwe’s Civil Aviation Authority, told media.

“We are trying to establish what has caused the accident. We have set up an emergency help line desk to assist.”

Andhra High Court adjourns hearing on Raju’s bail plea

Hyderabad, August 05: The Andhra Pradesh High Court Thursday adjourned the hearing on the bail petition of B. Ramalinga Raju, the prime accused in the multi-crore Satyam fraud case.

Justice Raja Elango adjourned the hearing to Aug 12 as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sought time to file counter-reply to the bail plea of the former Satyam Computer Services Limited chairman.

Injured demonstrator dies in hospital in Kashmir

Srinagar, August 05: A demonstrator who was injured when security forces opened fire on a curfew-defying mob at Ganpathyar in the old city last night, has died in hospital.

Official sources said the injured man was admitted to SMHS hospital where he was operated upon by the doctors.

The man died this morning, a doctor said. The sources said security forces also opened fire at Bemina in the city outskirts last evening, resulting in injuries to three people.

The injured were immediately shifted to nearby SKIMS, Bemina, where one of the injured succumbed to injuries.

Man arrested with explosives

Lucknow, August 05: A middle-aged man has been arrested with a huge cache of explosives, including ammonium nitrate and detonators, from Uttar Pradesh’s Banda district, police said Thursday.

Ram Manohar was nabbed late Wednesday from Naraini area with ammonium nitrate, 200 detonators and 70 feet long fuse wires. His aide escaped.

“We cannot rule out the possibility of the man’s involvement with Maoists. Investigations are on,” Deputy Superintendent of Police Gajendra Singh said in Banda, some 300 km from here.

Viqar attended police press meets

Hyderabad, August 05: Syed Viqaruddin, the self-styled leader of fundamentalist outfit Tehreek-Galba-e-Islam, reportedly attended press conferences held by police officials using fake identity cards, police said.

Police sources said Viqar, before striking against the police twice, first at Santoshnagar and then in Falaknuma, had attended a few media conferences, including some convened by the Hyderabad police commissioner.

“Sometime in 2006 and 2007, he attended the press conferences organised by the police officers at the commissioner’s office (Basheerbagh),” sources said.

IB issues terror alert ahead of Aug 15

New Delhi, August 05: The nation has been put on high alert following intelligence inputs that Pakistan-based terrorists may strike in a desperate bid to derail the Independence Day celebration on August 15.

The Intelligence Bureau (IB) has issued terror alert for 12 cities ahead of 63rd Independence Day this year.

According to the IB inputs, the Pakistan-based militant outfit HuJI has prepared fidayeen team (Suicide attack team) to target 12 major cities in India.

Following the advisory, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Hyderabad have been put on high alert.
