Book cases against leaders encouraging suicides: Lagadapati

Hyderabad, August 06: Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal on Thursday said that leaders of all political party were responsible for encouraging students’ suicides in the Telangana agitation.

Talking to media persons after submitting a power point presentation on issue of bifurcation of the state before the Srikrishna Commission, he accused the leaders for making emotional statements on Telangana issue and encouraging students to take extreme steps for the cause of Telangana.

Aus cops alert as Facebook chatter hints racial brawl

Melbourne, August 06: Police intensified patrolling in this Australian city following chatter on social network site Facebook about possible racial violence involving teenagers.

Facebook is buzzing with talk that a wild brawl involving gangs of high-school students and up to 100 onlookers Thursday was only the precursor to a larger fight. The website claimed the violence, thought to be race related, would continue Friday at Craigieburn railway station in Melbourne.

Woman should remove burqa, Aus court told

Sydney, August 06: A lawyer in an Australian court has argued that a Muslim woman should remove her burqa while giving evidence, just as she would have to while appearing in an Islamic court.

But the court in Perth hearing the lawyer’s submission Thursday rejected the argument as not relevant, Australian news agency AAP reported.

District Court Judge Shauna Deane said the defence counsel’s submission, that in Islamic courts women had to remove their burqas, was not relevant as the matter was not being heard in an Islamic court.

Teen, 13, was sex slave to grandpa

Betong, August 06: Media reported about a 13-year-old teenager in Betong, Sarawak, who was forced to be her step-grandfather’s sex slave for the past five years.

The rape went unreported because the girl feared that the man would refuse to pay her school fees.

The teenager, who said the sexual abuse started when she was eight years old, could not depend on her grandmother as the woman would always side with her husband.

B’desh Muslims alloted houses in Ayodhya, claims VHP

Faizabad, August 06: The VHP today claimed that Bangladeshi Muslims have been alloted houses in Ayodhya and threatened to launch an agitation to evict them, a charge refuted by the district administration.

Skirts cause outrage in Britain

London, August 06: Parents in Britain have criticised retail chain Tesco for selling a school skirt that is less than 30 cm long and a third shorter than normal school skirts.

The school skirt called a Hitch and Stitch is barely 29.5 cm and parts of it are hitched up and stitched in place to keep the hemline high.

Parents observed that the skirts “overly sexualises” girls.

Kuala Lumpur, August 06: The Malaysian government has announced aid of $1 million to help people in flood-hit Pakistan.

“The government of Malaysia hopes the contribution will help alleviate the suffering of flood victims in Pakistan,” New Straits Times said Friday quoting a foreign ministry statement.

The floods since July 22, Pakistan’s worst in 80 years, has so far claimed at least 1,600 lives and left almost a million homeless, the state-run Bernama news agency reported.

Teacher forced to smoke cigars as a punishment

Kuala Lumpur, August 06: The actions of a teacher who allegedly forced several pupils to smoke cigars as a punishment is unacceptable and a breach of the procedures.

Education director-general Tan Sri Alimuddin Mohd Dom said teachers must adhere to established guidelines when disciplining pupils.

“Pupils found smoking should be warned or sent for counselling,” he said, adding that any further action should have been left to the state Education Department.

Gangster gunned down in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow, August 06: A gangster wanted in over 20 criminal cases, including murder and abduction, was gunned down in Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur district but his aide escaped, police said Friday.

Akbar Khan, 35, who carried a reward of Rs.50,000 for his capture, was shot dead late Thursday during a gun battle with the police in Zafrabad area, some 250 km from here.

“While carrying out the routine vehicle checking drive, we stopped Akbar Khan and his aide, who were on a motorcycle. The duo started firing at us,” police inspector Ramesh Yadav told reporters in Jaunpur.

Jerusalem, August 06: A new Iranian website that denies and mocks the Holocaust with cartoons showing Jews as hook-nosed worms burrowing holes through a history book provoked outrage in Israel today.

The site, holocartoons.com, features caricatures including a Jew with a hook nose and a black hat emblazoned with a Star of David tracing fake bodies on the ground at a concentration camp. The website design uses Nazi imagery, with the icon for flipping pages marked with a swastika.
