Towel recovered from woman’s stomach

Jaunpur (UP), August 07: A towel allegedly left by a doctor has been recovered from the stomach of a 38-year-old woman, officials said here today.

Geeta Devi, a resident of Roopchandpur village, was operated upon for tumour by a government doctor on July 7, they said.

After 10 days, she complained of severe ache following which an ultrasound test was carried out which revealed the presence of some substance in her stomach, they said.

When Geeta Devi was re-operated late last night, the doctors found the towel from her stomach, officials said.

Hyderabad, August 7 (Siasat News): Police Chhatrinaka has arrested a man selling illicit liquor and seized 500 packets and his scooter which had no number plate.

According to police, L Suraj Singh, 23, is the resident of Jumerat Bazar. According to ASI Khaja Moinuddin, he was arrested near Kandikal gate and was said to be involved in shifting the illicit liquor from Dhoolpet.

Minor girl kidnapped, raped

Chandigarh, August 07: A 14-year-old girl was allegedly kidnapped and raped by a man, police said today.

Mother of the victim has alleged in her complaint that her daughter, who lives with her in Daria village here, was kidnapped a few days back and later raped by Raju Masih.

A case under various Sections of the IPC has been registered against Masih, a resident of Kailash Nagar in Baltana village of Mohali district, police said.

Masih’s wife has also been booked and arrested, while her husband was absconding, police added.

UPA government policies aimed to help super rich: CPI-M

Vijayawada, August 07: Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) general secretary Prakash Karat Saturday slammed the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government saying its policies were designed to help only the super-rich.

“The Congress-led government’s policies are designed to help big businesses make super profits and to enable the transfer of resources to the rich and powerful,” Karat said inaugurating the party’s extended central committee meeting in Vijayawada.

He said the fiscal and taxation policies of the Congress-led government illustrate this fact starkly.

Pakistan’s Harkat-ul-Jihad Islami declared terror group

Washington, August 07: The United States and the United Nations have designated Pakistan’s Harakat-ul Jihad Islami a “Foreign Terrorist Organization” and targeted its commander Mohammad Ilyas Kashmiri, said to be an associate of jailed Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operative David Headley.

Kashmiri, 46, who was said to be in close contact with Pakistani-American Headley, a self-confessed key plotter in the 2008 Mumbai carnage, for terrorist activities in India was labelled a “Specially Designated Global Terrorist” by the State Department Friday.

Key accused in Allahabad blast surrenders in court

Allahabad, August 07: A man wanted in connection with last month’s bomb attack targeting Uttar Pradesh minister Nand Gopal Gupta alias Nandi, surrendered in a court here Friday, officials said.

Manoj Pandey surrendered before the court of chief judicial magistrate after which he was sent to 14 days judicial custody.

The state government had announced a cash reward of Rs. 1 lakh on Pandey July 29.

The police teams constituted to nab Pandey were caught unawares as he surrendered in court.

Sydney, August 07: A pair of high-heeled woolly Ugg boots to be worn by Australia’s representative at the Miss Universe Pageant later this month has come under fire on two fronts — tackiness and animal cruelty.

PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) asked Jesinta Campbell not to wear Ugg boots or a lamb’s wool shrug at the pageant in Las Vegas on August 23 because it was cruel and unethical, using Australian wool sourced from mulesed sheep.

Mumbai, August 07: Tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain, who has returned to music composition after eight years with the crossover movie “For Real”, says he doesn’t work on many films because it becomes a task. He is also impressed with the new crop of talent on the Indian music scene.

” ‘For Real’ is the third film that I have done music for. I am not in India most of the time; so working on Indian films becomes a task,” Hussain told IANS in an e-mail interview.

HP chief resigns over sexual harassment investigation

San Francisco, August 07: Mark Hurd, chief executive of computer giant Hewlett Packard (HP), has resigned following an investigation into charges of sexual harassment, the company announced Friday.

HP said the investigation determined there was no violation of HP’s sexual harassment policy but did find violations of HP’s Standards of Business Conduct.

Panorma, August 07: Miss Singaproe Universe Tania Lim will represent Singapore with an elegant silver gown designed on a budget of $500.

The gown was inspired by the modern architecture of Singapore, and designed by a 19-year-old student from the Raffles Design Institute.

Miss Tracy Wu’s design was picked from 35 submissions, including some from other international students.

The Chinese student, who hails from Guangzhou, said she took three weeks to complete the gown.

The silver shoulder piece on the dress incorporates the five stars and crescent moon of the Singapore flag.

Somali forces destroy al-Shabab bases

Somalia, August 07: Several bases belonging to al-Shabab fighters have been destroyed during attacks by government forces in the Bakool region in central Somalia, says a senior Somali official.

Somali government troops carried out the massive operation during the past 24 hours, Deputy Interior Minister Abdi Rashid Xidig told a Press TV correspondent by phone late Friday.

In another development, Somalia’s pro-government Ahlu Sunnah Wal-Jama forces have vowed to wage war against their arch-rivals, Hizbul Islam and al-Shabab, in the coming Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Man records thrashing by wife, get Divorce

A man who was thrashed by his wife and had recorded the abuse using spy cameras to present it as evidence in his divorce proceedings has won the case and the legal custody of his 11-year-old son, reports Mumbai Mirror.

Purushottam Mahajan, 44, who was locked in divorce and custody battle with his wife Pallavi for over two years, installed secret cameras at their Aarey Colony house to capture how she abused him physically in his son’s presence. In November 2009, the video was uploaded on YouTube by an NGO to show how law was heavily loaded against men in cases of marital discord.

New Delhi, August 07: CBI told the Gujarat high court on Friday that it had evidence indicating former minister of state for home Amit Shah’s involvement in the killing of Tulsi Prajapati as well.

Shah is already facing charges of killing Sohrabuddin Sheikh and wife Kausarbi in fake encounters.

CBI also said documents pertaining to the communication in state CID about the interrogation of Prajapati had gone missing.

UAE confirms terror attack on Japanese tanker

Abu Dhabi, August 07: The United Arab Emirates Coast Guard Friday confirmed the terror attack on a Japanese tanker in the Strait of Hormuz last week, saying a boat loaded with explosives had hit the vessel.

The attack on the tanker caused no human injuries or spills of oil.

The tanker M. Star left the port of Fujairah Friday after repairing damage to its starboard side incurred when it was attacked July 28.

Investigations and an examination carried out by specialised teams confirmed that the tanker had been the subject of a terrorist attack, a source at the UAE Coast Guard said.

Illegal migration leads to exploitation of women: study

New Delhi, August 07: Poverty, landlessness and unemployment are pushing larger number of Indian and Bangladeshi women to different countries through illegal channels and subjecting them to exploitation and sexual harassment, a new study said here Friday.

The study titled ‘Gender dimensions of international migration from India and Bangladesh: Impact on the families left behind’ found that majority of women, who emigrate illegally, were subjected to isolation, low remuneration, exploitation and sexual harassment by their employers.

Women feared killed by in-laws appears in court

Mathura, August 07: A married woman who was feared to have been killed by her in-laws for dowry a few months back appeared before a court today with her three children.

Vandana Chaturvedi said in the court of ACJM Chandra Bhan that she had fled to New Delhi with her three children fearing harm from her in-laws but her father though she was killed and filed a complaint with the police.

103 people killed in flash floods in Leh

Leh, August 06: At least 103 people were killed and another 370 injured when flash floods triggered by torrential rains struck this Himalayan town in Ladakh region, northeast of Jammu and Kashmir, leaving a trail of death and destruction.

“We have recovered 103 bodies so far and at least 370 are injured. The number of missing cannot be ascertained as yet,” State Police Chief Kuldeep Khoda told PTI over phone from Srinagar. He said the toll may go up.

16 bodies found in Afghan

Kabul, August 07: Bodies of 16 people, including some foreigners, were found in northeast Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province Friday, an official said.

Local authorities Friday found the bodies in Kuran Wa Munjan district of the province, deputy provincial governor Shamsull Rahman Shams told Xinhua.

The 16 people visited the neighbouring Nuristan province and then went back to Badakhshan province, said Shams, adding that they did inform local government of their trip.

It is not clear why the foreigners were killed in the remote Afghan province.

Fatwa against Ladies judges, Deoband

New Delhi, August 07: Islamic seminary Darul Uloom Deoband has issued an edict saying that Muslim women should not become judges as it is forbidden in the religion.

The seminary posted the fatwa on its website after a question was posed to it on the issue.

The edict which said that women should not become judges has drawn sharp reaction from various quarters.

“Somebody’s qualification should be judged by education and upbringing and not by gender. This is bias,” said advocate and women activist Mumtaaz Akhtar.

NY airports to install full-body scanners

New York, August 07: New York region’s three major airports will next month install full-body scanners, which critics said would violate constitutional rights of American people, news reports said Friday.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which manages Newark Liberty in New Jersey and the John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia international airports, said the scanners will be put to use in September.
