Afghanistan won’t allow Pakistan to erode sovereignty: Rao

New Delhi, August 08: Afghanistan is too independent to allow Pakistan to erode its sovereignty and the gradual progress the war-ravaged country has made, says Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao.

“Afghanistan is a fiercely independent country. And the take away we have had from meetings with the Afghan leadership in the recent past is that they are zealous about guarding that independence and in ensuring that the progress that they have made in Afghanistan over the last nine years is not eroded in any manner,” Rao told Karan Thapar on CNN-IBN’s Devil’s Advocate programme.

CBI continues to quiz Amit Shah

Gandhinagar, August 08: Former Gujarat minister Amit Shah continued to be quizzed by CBI officials here Sunday, a day after he was grilled for nine hours in connection with the 2005 killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh in a staged shootout.

The former minister of state for home was at the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office here in the morning for the final day of questioning. His two-day period of CBI remand ends Sunday night.

Al Qaida offering cash to ex-allies in Iraq

US citizens in S Arabia warned of attack

Riyadh, August 08: The US embassy in Saudi Arabia has urged American nationals living in the oil-rich kingdom to “exercise prudence” amid information that they may come under attack.

The warning, which was posted on the US embassy website, was the first of its kind this year, AFP reported on Saturday.

“We have received credible information that an unidentified extremist(s) in Saudi Arabia may be planning to attack Westerners working and living in Al-Qassim, Saudi Arabia,” the message read.

Lucknow, August 08: In a bid to improve the standard of education and to provide better educational opportunities to their youth, Muslim organisations in the country have taken an initiative to set up a separate board on the lines of ISC and CBSE.

“It has been decided to set up a Muslim Education Board on the lines of ISC and CBSE boards which will give affiliation to religious and non-religious educational institutions in the country,” member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board Maulana Khalid Rashid Firangi Mahali told PTI.

Plane crash kills two in US

Washington, August 08: A small plane crashed into a home in Pennsylvania state, US, Saturday, killing at least two people.

The plane – a twin-engine BE58 Beech Baron – crashed into the house in a rural area about 140 km from Pittsburgh, Xinhua reported quoting local police.

The federal aviation administration said the plane took off from Arnold Palmer regional airport in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. It went down 11 minutes after the takeoff.

Rescuers managed to recover the two bodies from the wreckage. It was believed that only two people were on board.

Over Enthusiastic Fan Injures Chiru

Guntur, August 08: The Praja Rajyam party chief, Mr K Chiranjeevi, was injured on Saturday because of the over-enthusiasm of a fan.

Mr Chiranjeevi, who was touring the district, was addressing a meeting when a fan threw a stick with a party flag at him to catch. The former megastar who had not observed the missile coming in his direction was hit on the head. He has sustained a simple injury.

The police, who swung into action, had taken the youth into custody. However, it is learnt that Mr Chiranjeevi had requested them to release his fan, as he meant no harm.
