Hyderabad, July 30: Faced with defeat in the by-elections to 12 Assembly constituencies in the Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh, the ruling Congress and principal opposition Telugu Desam Party said the Telangana Rashtra Samiti’s victory was “very much expected.”

Chief Minister K Rosaiah issued a one-line statement saying: “We respect the people’s verdict.”

APCC president D Srinivas, who lost to his BJP rival Y Lakshmi Narayana in Nizamabad Urban, said “very strong Telangana sentiment” worked in the TRS’ favour, enabling it to sweep the by-polls.

I can’t be frightened: Narendra Modi

Bhavnagar, July 30: In the backdrop of CBI’s reported move to quiz him in Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter killing case, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said he cannot be frightened and would fight against “falsehood” 100 times.

“The war between nationalists and anti-nationalist demons has started in Gujarat. But remember this is Gujarat where anti-nationalists forces will be defeated”, Modi said addressing a rally in Palitana town of this district.

Hearing on SPS Rathore’s petition adjourned till Monday

New Delh, July 30:The day-to-day hearing on the revision petition of former Haryana DGP SPS Rathore challenging his conviction in the Ruchika molestation case could not take place in the Punjab and Haryana high court today as the judge was unwell.

Rathore’s counsel and wife Abha and the CBI had already completed their arguments, and it was lawyer of complainant Madhu Parkash who is being heard by the court.

As the case came up for hearing before justice Jitendra Chauhan, the parties were informed that the judge was not feeling well and would now take up the case on Monday.

Delete ‘newly added facts’ in paternity suit: Tiwari

New Delhi, July 30: Former Andhra Pradesh governor N.D. Tiwari Friday asked the Delhi High Court to direct the person claiming to be his biological son delete the newly added facts in the paternity suit.

Tiwari, represented by his counsel Chetan Sharma, raised objections to the additional facts incorporated by Rohit Shekhar in his fresh paternity suit. He said that Rohit should have sought the court’s permission to amend the suit with the new fact that he had tried to meet Tiwari at an airport in 2005.

Woman not allowed to teach after burqa refusal

Kolkata, July 30: A lady teacher in West Bengal’s first Muslim university, the Aliah University, was not allowed to teach after she refused to wear the burqa (veil) inside the varsity premises.

Sirin Middya, a guest lecturer of the university, along with eight other lady teachers got a ‘diktat’ from the leaders of the students’ union to wear burqa and attend the college.

Inflation will keep declining after July: Ahluwallia

Bangalore, July 30: India’s inflation rate, which peaked this month following the fuel price hike in June, will keep declining after July and moderate by December, Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwallia said Friday.

Pressurise India to resolve Kashmir issue: Pak

Islamabad, July 30: The Chairman of the Parliamentary Kashmir Committee today asked the global community to pressurise India to resolve the Kashmir issue according to the sentiments of Kashmiris.

In a statement, Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman said claimed India has miserably failed to overcome Kashmiris’ sentiments.

He said “India cannot keep Kashmiris as slaves for long time and will have to give them right to self- determination,” the Associated Press of Pakistan reported.

Scarlett’s mother deposes before Goa court

Panaji, July 30: Two and half years after her daughter Scarlett Eden Keeling was found dead on a Goa beach, Fiona Mackeown today narrated the deposed before a court here narrating the sequence events in the run up to and post-death.

Fiona, in her deposition before Goa Children’s Court, reiterated that police sub inspector Nerlon Albuquerque had initially tried to cover up the case.

“He (Nerlon Albuquerque) told me that she (Scarlett) had drowned during swimming. Scarlett was very good in swimming and so I did not believe him,” Fiona told GCC president P V Sawaikar.

ED to probe foreign fund trail of CWG

New Delhi, July 30: The Enforcement Directorate has started a probe into international monetary transactions pertaining to certain Commonwealth Games project contracts awarded to a London-based firm.

The ED will get in touch with the Games Organising Committee to obtain documents of the contract entered with the company, official sources said.

The agency would also get in touch with its London counterpart to ascertain the registration and financial transactions of the company in UK.

Integrated action plan to address naxal issue: Ahluwalia

Bangalore, July 30: An integrated action plan was being worked out to address the naxal issue affecting some parts of the country, Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia said today.

Efforts were being made to look at the development deficits in these affected areas and possible solutions to address it, he said during an interactive session here.

Ahluwalia said that though a lot dealt with security issues, it was not “purely a law and order issue” and involved other essential elements including institutional governance.

TRS wins six out of 12 seats in by elections, leads in 5

Hyderabad, July 30: Riding the crest of a separate statehood campaign, the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) today swept the by elections in the region winning six of the 12 Assembly seats and leading in five others.

The ruling Congress and main opposition TDP drew a blank with Congress suffering a humiliation when its state unit President D Srinivas lost again in Nizamabad Urban seat, like in the last assembly elections.

Student killed, sibling injured in road mishap

New Delhi, July 30: A 11-year-old student was killed while his younger brother suffered serious injuries here today when a speeding truck hit a motorcycle they were travelling in, police said.

The incident took place in Burari at around 2:30 pm when the brothers were returning home with a school staff on his motorcycle.

The deceased has been identified as Gagan, a class VI student of a Gyan Bharti Public school in Naraina. His brother Ankit (10) suffered injuries in the accident,

Snake venom worth Rs one crore seized

Sirsi (Ktk), July 30: Cobra venom, valued at about Rs one crore in the international market, was seized and two persons were arrested in this connection, police said here today.

Prashant Srikant Shetty (27) of Marathikoppa of Sirsi and Irfan Ahmed Mahammad Iliyas (24) of Soraba were arrested yesterday for illegal transport and marketing of the venom, they said, adding one litre of cobra venom was seized from them.

Man spends four days in flat with bodies of his parents

Mumbai, July 30: In a bizarre incident, a 42-year- old man spent four days with the decomposed bodies of his parents in their house in suburban Goregaon.

The bodies of N Rajan (80) and his wife Chandra (70) were found in their first floor residence in Nandanvan building this afternoon, police said.

Police were alerted by their neighbours who complained about a foul smell emanating from the flat.

Telangana ‘sentiment’ triumphs in Andhra bypoll

Hyderabad, July 30: The “sentiment” has won in Telangana.

Those who sacrificed their (MLA) posts for the cause of a separate state have earned the “sympathy” and redeemed their seats with thumping majorities in the 12 constituencies that went for by-polls in the region.

That the victors as well as the losers attributed their victory or defeat to the “strong Telangana sentiment” only signifies this factor.

Governor of varsities talks tough at VCs’ meet

Hyderabad, July 30: Equally critical at the second meeting of the vice chancellors, governor and chancellor of the universities ESL Narasimhan has said that the significance of the PhD degree has been diluted over the last few years and that individual colleges have been making mockery of the system by dictating terms to universities.

In his first meeting with vice-chancellors in February, the governor came down very harshly on them for not running the universities in the way they should. He had asked them to set their houses in order by the time they attend the next meeting.

Website on anti-ragging measures planned

Hyderabad, July 30: As anti-ragging measures topped the agenda of the vice chancellors’ conference here today, the participants deliberated on how to make this academic year a ‘zero ragging year’.

A decision was taken to start a website entirely dedicated to the cause of anti-ragging wherein students can directly post problems and names of the offending seniors. The website would have a direct link-up with a central police station which would monitor it round-the-clock.

Techie, student and mother end lives

Hyderabad, July 30: In yet another suicide pact in the city, a woman and her two children including a software engineer, ended their life at Gudimalkapur today.

All the three hanged themselves to death in three different rooms of the house. The victims were identified as Vasantha (40) and her two children — Vamsi Krishna (25) and Harish (22). Tappachabutra police said Vamsi Krishna was a software engineer working in Infosys in the city while Harish was pursuing engineering in a private college.

R&D centre in bulk drugs to come up in City

Hyderabad, July 30: The union ministry of chemicals & fertilizers on Thursday said it will set up a national centre for research and development in bulk drugs with an estimated investment of Rs 45 crore. The proposed centre, which will come up at the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) campus in Hyderabad is likely to provide leadership in pharmaceutical sciences and other related areas.

Babus behind Bholakpur tragedy ‘bailed’ out

Hyderabad, July 30: The Hyderabad City Police on Thursday arrested five officials of the Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board holding them responsible for the supply of contaminated water, more than a year after it claimed the lives of 13 people in Bholakpur. All the accused were released on bail minutes after their arrest.

The arrested were Chief General Manager (Narayanguda division) P Manohar Babu, Deputy General Manager Rajasekhara Reddy, Deputy Manager Praveen Kumar, grade-1 technician Uma Maheshwar Raju and lineman David Raju.

Amani’s kin sent to judicial custody

Nellore, July 30: Film actress Amani’s brother Srinivas, his second wife Devikala and mother who were arrested in a dowry harassment case, were remanded in judicial custody for 14 days when they were produced in court today.

Amani, who is also an accused in the case, is still at large.

PM invites Maharashtra, AP CMs home

Hyderabad, July 30: As promised, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has invited the chief ministers of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh to his residence on Aug 2 to find a solution to the Babli dispute.

The Prime Minister’s decision comes after an all-party delegation from Andhra Pradesh headed by chief minister K Rosaiah invited his intervention in the dispute on July 26.
