Passport Facilitation Centre At Secunderabad

Hyderabad, July 23: Department of Posts in collaboration with the Ministry of external Affairs has opened a passport applications e-processing centre at Secunderabad HPO. The centre was opened today by Mr. K.V. sundara Rajan, Chief Postmaster General , AP Circle, Hyderabad.

Shankar Rao Seeks Sonia, Singh Intervention

Hyderabad, July 23: The CLP deputy leader, Dr P Shankar Rao, has faxed a letter to the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, and the UPA Chairperson, Ms Sonia Gandhi, pleading for their intervention to sort out the Babli project row between Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Speaking to the media at CLP office here on Thursday, Dr Shankar Rao said that the Maharashtra government was constructing about 14 projects across the Godavari river and utilising 102 tmcft of water illegally at the cost of the Telangana region.

Chief Whip Warns Nagam

Hyderabad, July 23: The Government Chief Whip, Mr Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, has warned the TDP senior leader, Dr Nagam Janardhan Reddy, either to control his language or face the wrath of the Congress activists. He said that Dr Reddy would be meted out a fitting lesson from the Congress activists if he continued to use the same language in future. The Congress leaders were not NTRs to tolerate their language and behavior, he warned.

TDP Seeks Jaya’s Support In Babli Fight

Chennai, July 23: The TDP has sought the support of the AIADMK on its fight against the Babli project, illegally being constructed by the Maharashtra government across the river Godavari.

The TDP MP, Mr Sujana Choudary, met the AIDMK supremo, Ms J. Jayalalitha, here on Thursday and explained to her the party’s stand on the project. He also explained to the former chief minister of Tamil Nadu that the Maharashtra government was constructing a number of projects illegally, impounding river waters due to Andhra Pradesh.

SC Okays By-Polls In Sircilla, Vemulavada

New Delhi, July 23: The Supreme Court on Thursday gave its green signal for holding the by-elections to the Sircilla and Vemulavada Assembly constituencies along with ten other seats for which by-elections are being held.

The Apex Court was responding to a Special Leave Petition filed by the Election Commission.

Apart from clearing the elections, the Supreme Court has also asked the opinion of the EC on Article 151 of the People’s Representation Act. The Court has sent notices to the Centre, Solicitor General, Attorney General and the TRS.

KCR Asked To Mind Language

Hyderabad, July 23: Strongly objecting to the TRS Chief, Mr K Chandrasekhara Rao’s allegations against the Congress, Dr Keshava Rao advised KCR to lead poll campaigning with dignity and decorum and shun from using vulgar language.

He said that the Congress was contesting in the by-elections following the high command’s decision only.

Rambabu Urges High Command To Reconsider Suspension

Hyderabad, July 23: Stating that he has not received any letter suspending him from the party so far, the PCC general secretary, Mr Ambati Rambabu, on Thursday alleged that some “wicked forces” might have deliberately misled the Congress high command against him.

Speaking to mediapersons here, Mr Rambabu said that he received the information about his reported suspension from the party only from friends, admirers and the media. He reiterated that he had never violated the party discipline and remained a loyal soldier for the last 20 years and never aspired for posts.

Salura Built After Fruitful Talks With Maha Govt: Ponnala

Hyderabad, July 23: The Major Irrigation Minister, Mr Ponnala Lakshmaiah, on Thursday, made it clear that the Salura Lift Irrigation Project under Bodhan mandal of Nizamabad district was constructed within the limits of Andhra Pradesh border.

Speaking to mediapersons here, Mr Lakshmaiah said that the State government held detailed talks with the Maharashtra government before taking up the work of Salura project. Besides, the Survey of India had given green signal for the project after holding comprehensive talks with the district Collectors of Nanded (Maharashtra) and Nizamabad.

Gaza hospitals overloaded with expired drugs

Gaza, July 23: Hospitals in the Gaza Strip are overloaded with expired drugs and medicines, Palestinian officials said.

The officials insisted Thursday that the drugs and medicines, which were donated to the Gaza Strip by aid organisations all over the world over the last two years, had expired, Xinhua reported.

Only 30 percent of the medical aid, sent to Gaza after the last Israeli military offensive 19 months ago, were used at hospitals and medical aid centres, an official in the Hamas-ruled ministry of health said.

Porn site blocking before Ramadan

Jakarta, July 23: The government announced plans to block porn websites before the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan starts around Aug. 10, an official says.

“[Blocking porn websites] will have begin before Ramadan. If some of [the websites] remain accessible, we can at least say we tried,” Communications and Information Technology Ministry spokesman Gatot S. Dewabroto said Thursday.

He was quick to add that the government would be “very careful” not to stoke public fears of web censorship similar to China or Iran.

US Senate postpones climate action for lack of support

Washington, July 23: The US Senate has postponed action on overhauling climate and energy policy, the chamber’s top Democrat said Thursday, proposing a much scaled-back version in its place.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said it was “terribly disappointing” to put off action on climate change, but the Democratic Party had to be realistic that conservative political opposition meant “we don’t have the votes” to pass a broad bill.

US soldier, two civilians killed in Iraq violence

Baghdad, July 23: An American soldier and two civilians were killed and four injured in separate incidents of violence in Iraq, police and US military said Thursday.
A US military statement said that one of its soldiers was killed in a bomb explosion Wednesday in Diyala province, Xinhua reported.

The latest death brings the number of US soldiers who have been killed in Iraq to about 4,413, since 2003, the report said.

Taslima asked to leave India

New Delhi, July 23: As the government is yet to decide on her plea for residential permit, controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasrin may have to leave India soon and apply for a fresh visa because her travel document expires in the middle of next month.

The 47-year-old doctor-turned-writer is also trying for a permanent residency in the country. Her visa is valid till August 16. Her application for granting a permanent residency in the country has been hanging in balance for years together.

UAE’s date festival attracts many visitors

Abu Dhabi, July 23: Dedicated to promoting the country’s heritage and celebrating the harvesting of dates, the ongoing annual Liwa Date Festival in the UAE has been attracting thousands of visitors, the organizers said Thursday.

The festival is organized by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH) in Al Gharbia in western UAE. It will end July 26.

Cultural programmes and traditional handcraft exhibitions are being organized on the occasion.

Bangalore, July 23: Breaking his silence over actress Ranjita after her name was linked with him for alleged involvement in sleazy acts, self-styled godman Nityananda described her as a “sincere and a humble devotee” and said he was hurt by the pain caused to her and her family.

Father sells daughter for Rs 70,000

Islamabad, July 23: In what can be described as a blot on the father-daughter relationship, a Pakistani man sold his 13-year old daughter for 70, 000 rupees for marrying a 55-year old man.

Now, the girl, Sadia, has filed a petition in the Lahore High Court (LHC) seeking protection and action against her own father and other family members.

Sadia had escaped from her father’s custody just three days before she was about to be married, but what is more shocking is that even the local police officials sided with her family and have been constantly harassing her, The News reports.

Sohrabuddin fake encounter case: CBI summons Gujarat home minister

New Delhi, July 22: The CBI has issued summons to Gujarat minister of state for home Amit Shah to appear before the agency on Thursday in connection with the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case.

“Shah has been asked to appear before us today at CBI office in Gandhinagar,” CBI IG P Kandaswamy told PTI.

The minister has been recently skipping cabinet meetings and not attending office. He also skipped the cabinet meeting held on Wednesday.

IIM-Lucknow launches new professional course

New Delhi, July 22: In a joint initiative with Hughes Communications India Limited, the Indian Institute of Management Lucknow (IIM-L) Wednesday launched a new programme to equip professionals with management skills in all economic environments

The programme, titled executive Global Business Management, is a blend of lectures, case studies, assignments and sessions from senior managers in the industry and firms.

Hughes Communications is a networking services company in India.

No leather shoes in Himachal government schools

Shimla, July 22: Leather shoes are to be barred from government schools in Himachal Pradesh because they are not environment friendly.

‘We plan to exclude leather shoes from the uniform in all government schools as these are not environment friendly. Moreover, these are made by slaughtering animals,’ Director (Higher Education) O.P. Sharma told IANS.

He said tennis shoes would take the place of leather shoes.

‘Our department has written to all school principals to get their feedback,’ Sharma said.

India unveils $30 laptop

New Delhi, July 22: India Thursday unveiled a Rs.1,500 (around $30) laptop designed specifically for students.

‘If more companies decide to manufacture a similar device, prices will come down automatically,’ Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal said after unveiling the low cost-access-cum computing device here.

The device would be made available to students in 2011.

When the ministry floated the concept of a low cost laptop some years ago, officials said it would cost Rs.500 ($10). It will now cost about three times the initial projections.
