Hyderabad, July 31: The Congress MP from Vijayawada, Mr Lagadapati Rajagopal, has said that the party would pick up in the 2014 general elections.

Obama calls for release of US detainees

Washington, July 31: US President Barack Obama has called on the Iranian authorities to “immediately release” three US citizens currently held in Iran on suspicion of spying, saying they never worked for the US government.

Ahead of the one-year anniversary of the hikers’ arrest on Saturday, Obama said the three committed no crime and were simply adventurous young people.

On Friday, the US Senate introduced a resolution marking one year since the hikers were detained and calling on Iran to “immediately and unconditionally release” them on humanitarian grounds, AFP reported.

Israeli jets hit Hamas targets in Gaza, nine hurt

Gaza, July 31: Nine Palestinians were injured late Friday when Israeli warplanes struck three separate targets in the Gaza Strip, which is ruled by the Islamic Hamas movement, medics and witnesses said.
The witnesses said they heard three successive explosions in western Gaza City in a strike aimed at a training compound belonging to Hamas security forces.

Medical sources said at least nine Palestinian police men were injured at the Hamas police training compound. They were taken by ambulances to the city’s main Hospital Shifa.

Move Sohrabuddin case outside Gujarat: CBI

Ahmedabad, July 31: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) submitted its status report on the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case to the Supreme Court.

According to television reports, CBI in its status report has asked for the case to be shifted out of Gujarat as it feels that investigation cannot be carried out in an impartial manner in the State.

The CBI is also learnt to have said that it will investigate the fake encounter of Tulsiram Prajapati, the man who allegedly witnessed the killing of Sohrabuddin.

Bangalore, July 30: In signs of more trouble for the Reddy brothers facing Opposition heat over illegal mining issue, a group of about 13 ruling BJP MLAs today met Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa and demanded action against them.

New Delhi, July 30: The Department of History and Culture at Jamia Millia Islamia has been rated as a Centre of Excellence in a survey, an official said Friday.

A survey called ‘Arts and Humanities Research Mapping, India’ was conducted by India Foundation for the Arts, Bangalore. The survey further listed 32 ‘centers of excellence’ from all over the country.

Explosives cache recovered from militant hideout

Jammu, July 30: Security forces tonight smashed a militant hideout and seized a cache of explosives and ammunition in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir.

A team of Rashtriya Rifles and Jammu and Kashmir Police seized the cache from the hideout in Kumet forest belt in Bhartund area in Ramban, army officials said.

The recoveries included two Chinese hand-grenades, 35 rounds of ammunition of AK-47 rifle, three kg of explosive powder, an IED circuit and four detonators.

Maruti to launch five CNG cars in a single day

New Delhi, July 30: In an unprecedented move to defend market share, the country’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India will launch five cars in CNG version in a single day in the second week of next month.

The company, whose market share has come down below 50 per cent in the quarter ended June for the first time in its history, will unleash factory-fitted CNG options of its best selling Alto, compact cars Estilo and WagonR, multi-purpose vehicle Eeco and mid-sized sedan SX4.

Soldier in WikiLeaks video case transferred to US

Washington, July 30: A US soldier accused of leaking military video footage from Iraq has been transferred to a US military jail, the US Defense Department said on Friday.

He is also suspected in the release of thousands of classified documents about the war in Afghanistan.

Private First Class Bradley E. Manning arrived at Quantico Marine Base in Virginia on Thursday night, the Pentagon said, after his court martial proceedings were transferred from Camp Arifjan, Kuwait.

Japanese boy drown while swimming

Chennai, July 30: A seven-year-old Japanese boy, son of a top official of a Japanese carmaker near here, drowned in a swimming pool at their bungalow today, police said.

Police said Yukinawa, son of Hideoniwa, a Director of carmaker Nissan (India) at Oragadam, drowned while swimming with his twin brother in the swimming pool at their bungalow at Panayur.

The boys were found in the deeper part of the swimming pool and were immediately taken to a private hospital where Yukiniwa was declared brought dead.
