Housewives, prostitutes, beggars clubbed in Census

New Delhi, July 24: The Supreme Court has slammed the Government for clubbing housewives with prostitutes, beggars and prisoners in the Census and describing them as economically non-productive workers.

The court described as “totally insensitive” and “callous” the approach of the statutory authorities in equating women, who are homemakers, with such segments, saying it was indicative of a strong gender bias against women.

London, July 24: Many may not mind it, but a new study has found that parents lose out on six months’ sleep in the first two years after a baby’s birth.

According to the study, on average parents get just four uninterrupted hours a night — an hour less than the minimum they need to be able to function and avoid rows and mood swings, a newspaper reported.

The study is based on a survey of 1,000 parents.

Principal sexually abused many girls: Investigators

Hyderabad, July 24: Mohammed Salahuddin Ayub, director and principal of Parkwood International School, had sexually abused more than one girl student, according to Central Crime Station (CCS) sleuths investigating one of the most heinous sexual crime cases in the city.

The 55-year-old-director, who has three sons in the same age group as his victims, was produced before the additional chief metropolitan court on Friday and was remanded in judicial custody till August 5. He was taken to Cherlapally jail.

Veiled Women denied bus ride in UK

London, July 24: London bus company Metroline said in a statement on Friday that it was investigating claims by two Muslim women that they were not allowed to get on a bus in the capital because one of them was wearing a face veil.

The company confirmed an incident involving two 22-year-old students from Slough, Berkshire took place on a
No 7 bus at Russell Square on Tuesday.

The firm said the women had made a complaint to Transport for London (TfL) and that Metroline was following it up, but stressed it was still merely an allegation at this stage.

Minor raped, three held

Chandigarh, July 24: One person was arrested on charges of raping a minor girl while two others, including a woman, were arrested for assisting in the crime. The police have booked Surinder Singh, a resident of Sector 56; Sarabjit Kaur and Gurwinder Singh were arrested for abetting rape. They were produced in court on Friday and remanded in 14-day judicial custody.

BMC approves dead woman’s signature

Mumbai, July 24: While ordinary people usually have to run from pillar to post for days on end to get gumasta (establishment) licences issued from the BMC, an RTI has revealed that with the right connections, one can get civic officers to issue licences even on Sundays and on August 15.

The BMC also approved the signature of a woman, thereby confirming that she was alive in 2006, who had died in 2002.

Sene, objects to girl meeting boy

Mumbai, July 24: After lying low for some months, right wing group Sri Rama Sene has indulged in moral policing again, this time by objecting to a Hindu girl visiting the house of her college mate from another community here.

About eight boys of the college had rented out a building in Bijay area and four of them were away when the girl came to their house, police said today.

After knowing about the incident, Sene activists reported the matter to the police, who took the duo to the police station for questioning.

Bangalore, July 24: Professor Ramzan Darga, a Muslim, teaches Basava Philosophy and Veerashaivism at Karnataka’s Gulbarga University. He was the keynote speaker at the Veerashaiva Samaja of North America 2010 Convention held on July 3 and 4 in Toronto. It was attended by over 450 people from Canada, the United States and India.

Veerashaivism, founded by Vishwa Guru Basava in the 12th century, has around 30 million followers in India, largely in Karnataka. About 1,500 families that follow this philosophy live in North America.

Pak, India should withdraw their troops from Siachen: Zardari

Islambad, July 24: Pakistan president Asif Ali Zardari today said Pakistan and India should withdraw their troops from Siachen as the military deployment on the glacier has become a burden on the national exchequers of the two countries.

Zardari made the remarks while addressing members of the media during a gathering at the chief minister’s house in the southern city of Karachi.

The time has come to demilitarise the Siachen glacier because of the high cost of the troop deployments, he said.

TC threatens to move court against Yechuri

Kolkata, July 23: Trinamool Congress today said it will move a court against CPI(M) Politburo member Sitaram Yechuri for a forthcoming editorial in the party organ ‘People’s Democracy’ for allegedly defaming the party.

Trinamool Congress general secretary Mukul Roy told newsmen that in the editorial, Yechuri had quoted an SMS received from a person which said Trinamool Congress stood for ‘Train Mishap Congress.’

Roy claimed copies of the editorial was circulated by email to a section of the media.

Supreme Court speaks up for wives, mothers

New Delhi, July 23: The personal care and attention rendered by a wife and mother to her family is immeasurable, and to compare it to that of a housekeeper or servant is “highly unfair, unjust and inappropriate”, the Supreme Court observed while asking for proper compensation to be given to dependents of women killed in road accidents.

In a judgment of far reaching consequences, the Supreme Court has said that it was high time that the Motor Vehicles Act and related laws are amended to give compensation to dependents of women road accident victims.

Four members of family drugged, robbed in Delhi

New Delhi, July 23: Four members of a family were drugged and robbed by their domestic help in their house in north Delhi, police said Friday.

The incident came to light at around 11 a.m. when a maid of the family knocked at the door of their three bedroom flat at the posh Ganpati Apartments of Civil Lines.

Cop booked for raping girl

Pathankot, July 23: A police constable was booked today on charges of raping a girl and extorting money from her.

The constable, posted at Gurdaspur, is absconding and a hunt is on trace him, police said.

Sardari Lal was booked on the complaint of the girl who alleged he had repeatedly raped her and extorted money from her.

VHP to organise campaign on the Ram mandir issue

Mumbai, July 23: VHP president Ashok Singhal today said his party will organise a public awareness campaign, covering two lakh villages in the country, from August 16 to November 15, on the Ram temple issue.

The decision was taken at VHP executive committee meeting at Ayodhya earlier this month, the Hanumant Shakti Jagran Samiti convenor, Vyanktesh Aabdeo, said.

Singhal also demanded for a legislation for early construction of the temple.

Banks can open mobile branches sans RBI nod

Mumbai, July 23: In a major step toward bringing about financial inclusion of the unbanked sections of the society, the Reserve Bank today allowed commercial banks to open mobile branches without its approval in areas with less than 50,000 population.

It has been decided to further liberalise the branch authorisation policy and grant general permission to domestic scheduled commercial banks (other than RRBs) to operationalise mobile branches in tier 3 to tier 6 centres (with population up to 49,999 as per Census 2001) subject to reporting,” the central bank said in a notification.

Govt set to introduce Women’s Bill in Lok Sabha

New Delhi, July 23:Government on Friday said the controversial Women’s Reservation Bill would be brought for consideration in the Lok Sabha in the Monsoon Session of Parliament — a move apparently aimed at dividing opposition unity.

”We hope to bring it in the Lok Sabha. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has announced on the floor of the Lok Sabha that we will bring it after consultation with all concerned. We will carry out some consultations,” Parliamentary Affairs Minister P K Bansal told reporters.

India develops world’s cheapest ‘laptop’ at $35

New Delhi, July 23: India has come up with the world’s cheapest laptop, a touch-screen computing device that will cost just $35.

Human resource development minister, Kapil Sibal, this week unveiled the low-cost computing device that is designed for students, saying his department had started talks with global manufacturers to start mass production.

“We have reached a (developmental) stage, that today the motherboard, its chip, its processing, connectivity, all of them cumulatively cost around $35, including memory, display, everything,” he told a news conference.
