KCR’s reply leaves EC unconvinced

Hyderabad, July 24: Giving a shock to Telangana Rashtra Samithi president K Chandrasekhar Rao, the Election Commission today voiced displeasure over his explanation on his remarks during the byelection campaign recently.

The poll panel had issued a showcause notice to Chandrasekhar Rao for stating that Telangana would become an inferno after December 31 this year if bifurcation of the State did not happen.

In its statement, the commission said the explanation given by Chandrasekhar Rao was not satisfactory.

129 Million tourists visited AP last year

Hyderabad, July 24: Andhra Pradesh tops the country in attracting tourists from across the country for the last 14 years, Andhra Pradesh tourism secretary Jayesh Ranjan has said.

“Tourism industry in the state has developed by 16 per cent last year, with 129 million tourists (including 88 million to Tirupati) visiting the state whereas Madhya Pradesh stood second with 114 million tourists,’’ he added.

Coming soon: A water tariff hike

Hyderabad, July 24: Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) is caught between the devil and the deep blue sea. The state government has decided to increase the power tariff from August 1. This would hit the Water Board badly, as it would have to bear an additional burden of Rs 3 to 3.5 crore per month for power consumption. Already, the Water Board is in a severe financial crisis and is not in a position to bear the additional expenditure.

Centre puts Rakshana Steels deal on hold

Hyderabad, July 24: The multi-crore mining project in Khammam district, in which family members of the late chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy allegedly have a vested interest, has been halted.

The Government of India has kept in abeyance a notification issued earlier reserving 1.40 lakh acres in Bayyaram, Garla and Nelakondapalli mandals in Khammam district in favour of the AP Mineral Development Corporation (APMDC) for mining.

Hyderabad, July 24: Election Commission today expressed strong displeasure over the “provocative” statements made by TRS President K Chandrasekhara Rao during the campaign for the July 27 by-elections to 12 Assembly seats in Telangana.

“The EC was not satisfied with his explanation regarding these statements and is of the view that he, as a responsible political leader, should not have made such statements in public, which can aggravate existing differences between different sections of the society,” Andhra Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer I V Subba Rao told reporters here.

PFI wants Kerala to be Muslim-majority state: VS

New Delhi, July 24: Radical Islamic outfit Popular Front of India (PFI) is aiming to convert Kerala into a Muslim majority state in the next 20 years, Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said here Saturday.

“For achieving that goal, the outfit is pumping money to attract youth and give them weapons. They also try to convert youth from other communities and persuade them to marry Muslim girls,” Achuthanandan told reporters here.

AP Election panel to monitor bypolls through 3-G phones

Hyderabad, July 24: Election authorities in Andhra Pradesh would provide 3G mobile phones to polling officers to obtain quick video footage on polling pattern during the July 27 by-elections of 12 Assembly constituencies in Telangana region.

“For providing us information on poll percentage, and whether polling is going on smoothly or not, we are appointing 320 zonal officers and 320 route officers. We will do video surveillance in Warangal and Nizamabad and for that 3G cell phones would be provided to zonal officers,” State Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) I V Subba Rao told reporters.

AP parties seek PM intervention to resolve water sharing row

Hyderabad, July 24: Political parties in Andhra Pradesh on Friday unanimously resolved to request Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to find an “appropriate, quick and permanent” solution to river water sharing dispute with upper riparian states Karnataka and Maharashtra.

“As a lower riparian state Andhra Pradesh is being deprived of its rightful share of river waters, as the upper riparian states Karnataka and Maharashtra have been constructing illegal irrigation projects on rivers Krishna and Godavari respectively,” they said.

Minor molested in AP, auto-driver arrested

Hyderabad, July 24: In yet another case of sexual abuse of a minor girl student, an auto driver who allegedly molested a five-year-old girl was picked up here today, police said.

The girl, a student of UKG at a local school in Falaknuma area here was allegedly molested by her auto-rickshaw driver while she was being dropped back to her house from school, they said.

Andhra school Director accused of raping minor sent to JC till Aug 5

Hyderabad, July 24: The Director-cum-principal of a school, who was arrested by city police for allegedly raping a teenaged student, was today sent to judicial custody till August 5 by a local court.

Mohd Salahuddin Ayub, arrested yesterday by the Central Crime Station (CCS), a wing of Hyderabad City Police, was produced before the XII ACMM court which sent him to 14-day judicial remand, a senior police officer said.

Detective Department DCP J Satyanarayana said that they had collected enough evidence, including scientific proof, against the school director to prove the allegations.

CWG stadiums to be ready by July 31: Delhi Lt Governor

New Delhi, July 24: All the stadiums for the 2010 Commomwealth Games will be ready before 31 July and the National Capital will hold successful Games, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna said on Saturday.

If the CWG fails to hand over the venue on August 1, the Olympic Committee will take over all the projects from there on and try to complete it on time.

Emaar Properties posts $451 mn profit

Dubai, July 24: Dubai-based real estate firm Emaar Properties has posted a net operating profit of 1,656 million dirhams ($451 million) in the first half of 2010.

The gains mark a 122 percent growth compared to the corresponding period last year. The firm released the figures Thursday.

The revenue for the first six months was 5.538 billion dirhams, recording a 59 percent growth compared to 3.481 billion dirhams in the corresponding period last year.
