Bayyaram mining lease suspension temporary: CM

New Delhi, July 25: Chief Minister K Rosaiah said on Saturday clarified that the lease on the Bayyaram mines has been suspended temporarily while a re-survey is conducted on the status of mineral wealth in the mines.

Talking to media persons in the National Capital, Mr Rosaiah said that the state government has no authority to suspend any mining lease agreement.

He said that only the Central government can strike off a mining lease agreement.

KCR forcing repeated elections for personal gains: Gone

Karimnagar, July 25: Senior Congress leader Gone Prakash Rao on Saturday charged Telangana Rashtra Samithi president of trying to win the by-elections by spending the money he had earned by rousing the Telangana sentiment among people.

Addressing a public rally, Mr Gone Prakash thundered that the TRS chief is repeatedly forcing elections on the people for personal gains.

He said that the by-elections have no link with the separate Telangana statehood issue since KCR forced his party MLAs to resign for his own benefits.

Govt taking proactive steps to contain swine flu spread: JC

Hyderabad, July 25: Hyderabad Joint Collector Smitha Sabherwal on Saturday said that the district administration was taking pro-active steps to contain the spread of swine flu in the twin cities.

Talking to media persons after a review meeting on swine flu, Ms Sabherwal said that the dreaded disease is under control and there is no cause for worry.

She revealed that since January 2010, a total number of 1757 health camps were conducted, 745 persons who came in contact with H1N1 afflicted patients, and 19 children were given prophylactic fluvir medicine.

Shankar Rao urges probe into Jagan’s businesses

Hyderabad, July 25: Mentioning that he was about to write to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi seeking investigation into the alleged irregularities into the Bayyaram Mines issue, senior Congress leader Shankar Rao on Saturday said that a thorough inquiry would clear ‘misconceptions’ of the opposition.

Talking to media persons, Mr Shankar Rao said that the impartial inquiry would also quieten the opposition who are raking the issue for political benefits.

Ahmedullah reviews Haj arrangements

Hyderabad, July 25: Minister for Minorities Welfare, Mohammed Ahmadullah Syed on Saturday reviewed arrangements being made for the safe and secure departure of Haj pilgrims of the state with officials of the AP State Haj Committee.

The Minister instructed officials to make foolproof arrangements for smooth Haj operations this year, involving all departments concerned and voluntary organizations and individuals hailing from different walks of life.

He enquired the status of the applications and passports of the Haj pilgrims received so far.

New Delhi, July 25: Describing Naxalism as the biggest barrier in the way of development of tribal areas, Chief Minister K Rosaiah on Saturday said that Andhra Pradesh has set an example for other states on how to tackle the menace.

Addressing the gathering at the National Development Council meeting in New Delhi, Mr Rosaiah stated that Naxalism has become more of a law and order problem these days, whereas it was a socio-economic problem earlier.

Underage maid raped by employer

Hyderabad, July 25: Following the two cases of child molestation which shocked the city during the week, a third incident in which an under aged maid was impregnated by her employer and has become a mother at the age of 16 came to light on Saturday.

In the last shocking case, Madannapet police registered a complaint after a poor couple from Nalgonda, Muthaiah Yadav and Pullamma, filed a complaint that their 16-year-old daughter was sexually molested and impregnated by one Narsing Rao. She gave birth to a male child over a month ago.

14 killed in Saudi flash flooding

Riyadh, July 25: At least 14 people have been killed and three others injured in flash flooding in southern districts of Saudi Arabia, Saudi officials have announced.

The incident claimed the lives of Saudi people in several mountainous areas of Asir, Jazan, Najran and Taif, the country’s civil defense members said on Saturday.

Rescue teams managed to evacuate some 440 people trapped in the regions after several days of heavy rains.

Civil Defence chief Saad al-Tuwaijri told Saudi media that his department was prepared to deal with the emergency.

Now sex scandal hits weightlifting body

New Delhi, July 25: Indian Weightlifting Federation on Saturday constituted a three-member committee to probe into the charges of sexual harassment of junior lifters by an unnamed coach as alleged by Sydney Olympic bronze medallist Karnam Malleswari.

The committee, to be headed by IWF vice-president Kumbasi Subramanya, will submit the report to the federation within seven days. The other two members of the committee are veteran coach Pal Singh Sandhu and IWF joint secretary Madan Lal Salvi.

Israeli team faces protests in Turkey

Ankara, July 25: Angry protesters in Turkey have staged a demonstration against the presence of an Israeli team at a volleyball tournament in their country.

Large numbers of people gathered near the sports hall in the capital Ankara on Saturday, calling on the government to expel the Israeli team, which is in Ankara for a women’s European Volleyball League tournament.

Chanting anti-Israeli slogans, the protesters were carrying posters of Furkan Dogan, the youngest of the pro-Palestinian activists killed in Israel’s May 31 attack on the Gaza-bound Freedom Flotilla.

Halt settlements or no talks, PA says

Gaza, July 25: The Palestinian Authority (PA) has reiterated that it will only join direct negotiations with Israel when Tel Aviv ends the expansion of West Bank settlements.

Chief PA negotiator Saeb Erekat said on Saturday that Israel must accept the borders of 1967, with approved land swaps, and end its settlement activities before the long-stalled peace talks can resume, the Ma’an news agency reported.

Mumbai, July 25: South Indian actress Trisha Krishnan has entered Bollywood following the trend of debuting with a leading man far older than her. In ‘Khatta Meetha’, she stars opposite 43-year-old Akshay Kumar.

PM takes up with Krishna his ‘unnecessary’ criticism of Pillai

New Delhi, July 25: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is understood to have taken up with External Affairs Minister S M Krishna his public criticism of Home Secretary G K Pillai’s remarks on the involvement of the ISI in the 26/11 attack.

Government sources told The Sunday Express that Krishna was told that his public statements, made on July 21, were inappropriate and unnecessary. The PM conveyed the message after the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) on Friday morning. The CCS met to discuss India’s strategy on China and Bhutan.

Mumbai, July 25: Every foreigner who visits India will soon be “tagged”, and his/her unique case file identity folder will be stored as part of a massive database being created under the Home Ministry.

A new tamper-proof, machine-readable India visa sticker, sources said, will be launched by next month as part of this larger effort to revamp the foreigners’ visa, registration and tracking system.

Once the basic system has been set up, biometrics will be introduced for all visa applicants — to be launched on an experimental basis next year.

Cow slaughter: Sena threat to gherao Chavan

Mumbai, July 25: The Shiv Sena has threatened to gherao Chief Minister Ashok Chavan on his visit here on Sunday if those behind the slaughter of cows in Malegaon on July 21 are not arrested. The carcasses of eight cows were found on roads in Malegaon on Wednesday, the auspicious Ashadi Ekadashi day.

The Sena held a rally led by MP Chandrakant Khaire. As many as 125 cows were also paraded in the rally. Khaire alleged the carcasses were thrown on roads to hurt the sentiment of Hindus who hold the cows sacred.

Kolkata, July 25: Former captain of Indian cricket team Sourav Ganguly’s security guard was severely beaten up by some people after he tried to disperse an agitating crowd at Behala on the southern outskirts of this city, police said.

The incident happened Saturday night when Ganguly was returning home in his car, they said.

Ganguly’s car got stuck near Behala crossing on Diamond Harbour Road as a group of people were agitating over an accident in the area.

Putin met with deported Russian spies

Foros, July 25: Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin Saturday said he had met with spies deported from the US following the largest spy swap since the Cold War and assured them of a bright life in the future.

The ten individuals were arrested by US law enforcement June 27 on suspicion of being part of an espionage ring spying for Russia. They were quickly tried and flown out of the US in an exchange for four people convicted of spying in Russia for the West.

Lashkar-e-Taiba has become global threat: Mullen

Islamabad, July 25: The Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) has become “a very dangerous organisation and a significant regional and global threat”, Admiral Mike Mullen, the chairman of US Joint Chiefs of Staff, has said.

Talking to reporters at the US embassy here, Mullen stressed Saturday that there was a strong need to take stern action to stop LeT’s activities. He said LeT was expanding into Afghanistan and other countries beyond the region, the Daily Times reported.

23 e-seva centres to accept passport application

Hyderabad, July 24: The online registration system for applying for passports has been modified. Instead of two different registrations (tatkaal and ordinary), now there is only one system for online registration.

No date or time stamp will appear on the application form.

Applicants may submit applications within 30 days of online registration either at the Passport Office between 10 a.m and 12 noon or at any designated e-Seva centres between 8 am and 8 p.m.
