Karimnagar, July 26: Muslims in Telangana districts are in a dilemma about who to vote for, principally because the Telangana Rashtra Samiti, whose pro-Telangana stance most would naturally support, has joined hands with the Bharatiya Janata Party, which is seen as communal.

Muslims are a force to reckon with in half of the 12 Assembly segments going for in for a bypoll on July 27. More than 18 per cent of the population in Vemulawada, Sircilla and Korutla constituencies in Karimnagar district is Muslim and their vote can change the fortunes of candidates.

Hours after the scuffle in Arthur Road jail on Saturday morning, the underworld was abuzz with the theory that the attack could have been orchestrated by Abu Salem himself for his safe return to Portugal.

Salem was deported from a jail in Lisbon to Mumbai in 2005 only after the Government of India gave an assurance that his life would be safe in the country.

UK MP warned over burqa row‎

Yuvraj, Gambhir out of 2 Test

Colombo, July 26: India’s hopes of drawing level in the Test series against Sri Lanka were dealt a serious blow with Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh being ruled out of the second Test in Colombo. Gambhir was racing against time to recover from a troublesome knee, and the team management decided to leave him out after a final assessment on Monday morning. Yuvraj, who struck an attacking fifty in the first innings of the first Test was down with fever, leaving India without the services of their two first-choice left-hand batsmen.

Fakir drinks toddler’s blood

Madurai, July 26: In a chilling incident of child sacrifice, a fakir and his woman associate allegedly kidnapped, beheaded a one-and-a-half-year-old baby and buried the remains at two different places in southern Tamil Nadu, apparently to attain supernatural powers, the police said.

The police also suspected that the kidnapper may have drunk the child’s blood as part of occult rituals.

Bengal reeling under Rs 192,000 cr loan burden: Mamata

Kolkata, July 25: Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee today claimed that the Left Front government in West Bengal had a loan burden of Rs 192,000 crore which indicated “the sorry state of affairs of the economy”.

“The state was reeling under a loan burden of Rs 192,000 crore under the 33 years of CPI-M-led Left Front rule. This indicated the sorry state of affairs of the economy in the state under their rule. CPI-M has ruined the state,” she told reporters here.

Paid holiday on Jul 27 in Telangana region

Hyderabad, Jul: 25: The state Commissioner of Labour today declared a paid holiday to all the employees or workers employed in various shops and establishments in the areas where byelections are scheduled to be held on July 27.

The Commissioner requested all the concerned employers to allow their employees take a paid holiday on July 27, when the polling is scheduled to be held.

The bypolls to be held in 12 assembly seats, have been necessitated as the sitting MLAs had quit their posts in support of separate Telangana demand.

Govt open for more equity infusion in Air India: Patel

Mumbai, July 25: Government is open to infuse more equity in Air India provided the national carrier manages to improve its performance, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said today.

“Government is ready to look at it (further equity infusion) with an open mind. Government will look at it objectively,” Patel told reporters here.

Earlier, Patel, along with Civil Aviation Secretary Madhav Nambiar, attended the Air India board meeting which discussed the company’s proposed five-year turnaround plan.

RJD makes fresh demand for Nitish’s resignation

Patna, July 25: In the wake of a CAG report stating financial irregularities in Bihar, Opposition RJD made a fresh demand today for resignation of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his deputy Sushil Kumar Modi who, the party said, owned moral responsibility for misusing development funds.

Quoting the report, RJD national general secretary Ram Kirpal Yadav and spokesman Shakeel Ahmed Khan told reporters here that the NDA government should resign after the revelation that Rs 11,412 crore had been illegally withdrawn from different treasuries between April 1, 2002 and March 31, 2008.

Man rapes 11-year-old sister in Bharuch

Bharuch, July 25: A man in an inebriated condition allegedly raped his 11-year-old sister in Ayodhyanagar slum of the city, police said today.

The incident took place last night when one Sushil Vasava (27) was with his sister in their house, they said.

According to police, Sushil first assaulted his younger brother Sunil and threw him out of the house and then allegedly raped his minor sister.

Sunil lodged a complaint against Sushil, who is missing since the incident and police is on the lookout for him.

Nitish govt anti-minorities : Khurshid

Patna, July 25: Charging the Nitish Kumar government with being ‘anti-minorities’, Union Minister for Minority Affairs Salman Khurshid today said it had failed to take advantage of Multi-Sectoral Development Programme (MSDP).

“The Bihar government’s apathetic attitude towards implementing minority welfare schemes had caused a setback to the implementation of the minority welfare programmes in the state,” Khurshid told reporters here.

Night run of passengers trains suspended till July 29

Bhubaneswar, July 25: East Coast Railway (ECR) today suspended operation of passenger trains on Kharagpur-Rourkela and Kharagpur-Adra sections during night hours till July 29 for security reasons owing to threat from Maoists.

Some trains have been diverted and rescheduled on the route to avoid their movement from 10 pm to 5 am, an ECR release said here.

The 8477/8478 Puri-Hardwar-Puri Utkal Express would run via Jharsuguda-Sambalpur-Cuttack instead of Jharsuguda-Tata-Kharagpur-Cuttack.

Naidu outwitted by Maharashtra government

Nanded, July 25: The Maharashtra government induced Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader N. Chandrababu Naidu and his colleagues to leave the state by claiming to withdraw all cases slapped against them. It now appears only minor cases were withdrawn.

Although Naidu and company finally left – reluctantly and amid a lot of drama – for Hyderabad in a special aircraft from Aurangabad, around 450 km from here, the drama will continue to haunt them for long.

Income Tax Day celebrated

Hyderabad, July 25: For the first time in the history of Income Tax (IT) department, ‘Income Tax Day’ was celebrated today which coincides with the 150th year of the levy of Income Tax in the country.

It was on July 24, 1860 that IT was levied for the first time in the country and the IT Act was cleared by the then Governor General of India.

Double whammy for tainted school

Hyderabad, July 25: The State government on Saturday gave a major jolt to the Parkwood School International management. The School Education Department slapped showcause notices on the school asking why the No Objection Certificate issued to it should not be withdrawn and simultaneously, recommended to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) authorities to cancel its affiliation to the board.

Bayyaram decision not mine: CM

New Delhi, July 25: Chief Minister K Rosaiah on Saturday sought to distance himself from the decision taken by the Centre to keep in abeyance the controversial notification reserving 1.4 lakh acres in Khammam district for mining purposes.

“The Government of India received complaints that the reserved area comprises habitations and railway tracks. Therefore, the Centre advised the State government to take up a re-survey and until then, not allow any mining activity,” Rosaiah said in an informal chat with newsmen here.

Vishakapatnam, July 25: The identity of the five who threw a passenger out of an auto resulting in his death yesterday night is still unclear, but two people who were there in the auto when the incident occurred, one a friend of the victim and the other a relative, claimed that they were Naval personnel.

Naxal threat to AP from neighbouring states: CM

Hyderabad, July 25: Unless left wing extremism is contained in the neighbouring states too, the progress made by AP in controlling Maoist activities cannot be sustained. There will always be a possibility of Maoist violence spilling over into the state from its neighbours, chief minister K Rosaiah said at the National Development Council meet at New Delhi today.

The adjoining Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Maharashtra continued to face extremism, he noted.
