Kuala Lumpur, July 26: Malaysian men are hunting for brides from other countries like Vietnam and China, with many asking women to undergo virginity tests before agreeing to a wedding. Brides from India are not sought, a survey has said.

Luring them are matrimonial agencies which portray Vietnamese girls as ‘pure and innocent’ and who ‘will never divorce’. This trend of getting a foreign bride that began almost a decade back in Malaysia is catching on, The Star newspaper said in a survey on Sunday.

India successfully test-fires interceptor missile

New Delhi, July 26: India on Monday successfully test-fired its indigenously developed interceptor missile, capable of destroying any in-coming hostile ballistic missile, from the Integrated Test Range at Wheeler Island off Orissa coast.

Aimed at developing a full-fledged multi-layer Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) system, the trial was carried out from two launch sites of ITR off the Orissa coast, defence sources said. The whole exercise is to achieve the desired result with precision, said a senior defence scientist.

More US deaths forecast in Afghanistan

Washington, July 26: The top US army officer says the military would suffer more fatalities in Afghanistan over the summer as it is fighting the Taliban in the war-shattered country.

“As we continue our force levels and our operations over the summer … we will likely see further tough casualties and levels of violence,” Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen said Sunday during a news conference in Kabul.

Six Yemeni troops killed in oil area

Sanaa, July 26: Suspected al-Qaeda gunmen have attacked a military checkpoint near an oil facility in Yemen’s southeastern province of Shabwa, killing six soldiers.

The incident happened on Sunday when a group of armed militants opened fire on the soldiers at the checkpoint in the bloc S2 area of al-Oqlah oil facility — an oil exploration field operated by the Austrian company, OMV.

Security sources suggested al-Qaeda was behind the attack, saying it was the fourth such assault on state targets since June, said German news agency DPA.

Chavez threatens to cut oil sales to US

Venenzuela, July 26: Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez says his country will cease oil supplies to the United States if a military confrontation breaks out between Venezuela and Colombia.

“If there was any armed aggression against Venezuela from Colombian territory or from anywhere else, promoted by the Yankee empire, we would suspend oil shipments to the United States even if we have to eat stones here,” he said on Sunday.

“We would not send a drop more to US refineries,” he said to a roar of approval from thousands of supporters at a rally for his Socialist party.

Israeli planes pound southern Gaza

Gaza, July 26: Israel war planes have launched an airstrike on the southern Gaza Strip, targeting Palestinian tunnels across the border between the blockaded enclave and Egypt.

Missiles from Israeli aircraft destructed two tunnels early on Monday, but left no casualties, AFP quoted Palestinian security officials as saying.

Israel frequently strikes the tunnels in the Hamas-run coastal enclave while an Israeli blockade has pushed the populated territory on the verge of a humanitarian crisis with almost half of its 1.5 million residents depending on food aid handouts.

New Delhi, July 26: The CBI is not the ‘Congress bureau of investigation’, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Monday, refuting the Bharatiya Janata Party’s allegations of conspiracy behind the arrest of its leader Amit Shah.

‘CBI… is not Congress bureau of investigation. CBI is not a mouthpiece of the Congress,’ Manmohan Singh told reporters outside parliament before the beginning of the monsoon session Monday.

60,000 Child pornography Images jailed Australian

Melbourne, July 26: An Australian man has been sentenced to five years in prison for downloading nearly 60,000 ‘depraved and disgusting’ child pornography images.

Ian David Blundell, 31, downloaded 56,767 pornographic images, 1608 videos and 963 stories showing child pornography in years between 2005 and 2008.

Victorian County Court judge Sue Pullen Monday said the pornography was of ‘the most depraved and disgusting kind’. She observed that it was the worst kind of sexual exploitation of children as some of them were babies.

Woman stripped and paraded naked, 12 held

Mumbai, July 26: A 32-year-old woman was beaten, stripped and paraded naked in a village in Maharashtra for allegedly having an extramarital affair with a veterinary doctor. The veterinarian was also beaten and stripped.

The assault and humiliation, which lasted several hours, took place at Nanded village in the district of Jalgaon, 650 km from Mumbai, on July 19. So far, 12 people have been arrested for the assault, the police said on Saturday.

Over 100 workers taken hostage in Brazil

Rio de Janeiro, July 26: Equipped with homemade weapons like bows and arrows, a group of around 300 people took control of an under-construction dam in the Amazon jungle in Brazil and held over 100 workers hostage.

The protesters did not threaten the workers at the Dardanelos hydroelectric dam in Aripuana city Sunday but ordered them to move off to their barracks.

“They did not at any time threaten their lives. They calmly asked them to go to their lodgings,” said Antonio Carlos Ferreira de Aquino, regional coordinator of the Brazilian National Indian Foundation.

Maoist camp destroyed in 20-hour Jharkhand gunfight

Ranchi, July 26: A Maoist camp was destroyed in Jharkhand after a 20-hour gunfight between the security forces and the rebels, police said Monday.

The gun battle started Sunday in the jungle areas bordering Khuti, Seraikela and Kharsawa districts and continued overnight. It ended early Monday, a police officer said.

“It was a 20-hour gunfight. Some Maoists also sustained bullet injuries,” the police officer told IANS.

Around 900 security personnel comprising the Central Reserve Police Force and the Special Task Force (STF) were involved in the operation.

Speeding car kills two, injures eight

New Delhi, July 26: Two people were killed and eight injured when a speeding Honda City rammed into a group of labourers in Lodhi Colony area of Delhi last night. The incident was reported at around 11pm on Sunday when many labourers were repairing a flyover near Lodhi Colony and the Honda City (no. DL 3C BE 4414) crashed into them.

Two of the labourers were declared brought dead by doctors at the AIIMS Trauma Centre. The person who was driving the car and his co-passenger have been detained by the police and the car has also been seized. The police are investigating the case.
