Temporary permission for unrecognised schools

Hyderabad, July 01: Keeping in view the future of students, the State government on Wednesday relaxed the AP Educational Institutions Rules permitting unrecognised private schools in the state to operate for the academic year of 2010-11. The decision comes as a boon for the private schools which are operating without recognition from the state government. The unrecognised private schools will be granted temporary permission for the academic year of 2010-11.

Cop saves life by donating blood

Hyderabad, July 01: Satish Kumar, a constable at the Ramgopalpet police station, saved the life of Sudha(35) by donating a rare blood group called ‘Bombay phenotype’.It is reported that only 50-60 people in the country have this blood group.

The NTR Memorial Trust had arranged for platelets from Mumbai to save Sudha whose haemoglobin levels had dropped to dangerous levels. However, the doctors informed only single-donor platelets could save her life.

The Trust then contacted Kumar and arranged for the blood.

HC allows government to clear Maytas dues

Hyderabad, July 01: A division bench of the High Court comprising Justices G Raghuram and Reddy Kanta Rao on Wednesday vacated its earlier order and permitted the government to make payments due to Maytas. A bench presided by Justice Raghuram had stayed the clearing of bills of Maytas on the grounds of the works being awarded without calling for tenders.

Ramesh Reddy from Kadapa had challenged government action as being contrary to public policy and interest.

The government in its reply said the works were awarded to Maytas as no other company had come forward to carry out the works.

Newly wed couple hang selves

Hyderabad, July 01: A couple, who recently got married against the wishes of the girl’s parents, ended their lives at Langer Hauz on Wednesday.

The two, M Anil (22) and Leela (20), were medical representatives in different firms and fell in love at work. They were residents of Prasanth Nagar at Langer Hauz.

Police said Anil’s family agreed to their marriage but Leela’s parents, who reside at Gowlipura in the Old City, opposed the inter-caste wedding. Anil and Leela got married on May 16, 2010 at Arya Samaj and had been living with Anil’s family.

Bollywood welcomes Aamir Khan on Twitter

New Delhi, July 01: Bollywood stars welcomed actor Aamir Khan on microblogging site Twitter with a series of messages.

The 45-year-old star’s followers have already reached 59,625 on the very first day and the number is still increasing.

Russia ready to help NATO in Afghanistan

Moscow, July 01: Russia is willing to provide transport helicopters to assist the NATO-led military contingent fighting Taliban militants in Afghanistan, a defence official said Thursday.

Vyacheslav Dzirkaln, deputy head of Russia’s Federal Service for Military and Technical Cooperation, said Russian An-124 Condor cargo planes had transported over 88,000 metric tonne of cargo for NATO troops in Afghanistan under the Strategic Airlift Interim Solution (SALIS) project.

Cops threatened women with rape

Toronto, July 01: Journalists covering the G20 summit in Toronto, Canada, last weekend have accused the local police of threatening them with rape, using male officers to strip-search young women, and even inappropriately touching an underage girl.

Four reporters have filed complaints with the province of Ontario’s police oversight agency. According to the Canwest News Service, those four include Jesse Rosenfeld, a freelancer for the UK’s Guardian whose alleged beating at the hands of Toronto police was chronicled on Twitter, as well Amy Miller of the Alternative Media Center.

Four Maoists arrested in Jharkhand

Ranchi, July 01: Four Maoists were Thursday arrested in Jharkhand as a two-day strike called by the guerrillas affected life in rural areas.

According to police, three members of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) were arrested from a jungle area of Giridih district, some 190 km from Ranchi.

Police seized two rifles and live cartridges from the rebels. Another Maoist was arrested from Giddi village of Hazaribagh district.

Mukesh Ambani group tops in market cap, Anil’s logs sharpest growth

Mumbai, July 01: The Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries group has emerged as India’s largest private business house by market capitalisation as on June 30 though his younger brother Anil’s empire registered the maximum growth last quarter.

The Reliance Industries group’s market cap grew 2 percent to Rs.357,902 crore during the last quarter, while companies under the Tata group ranked second but actually registered a 3 percent decline at Rs.326,827 crore.

Abu Salem gang sharp-shooter arrested in Delhi

New Delhi, July 01: An alleged sharp-shooter of Abu Salem gang was arrested in the national capital, police said today.

Mohd Akram Siddiqui, who was declared a proclaimed offender in a case of extortion and attempt to murder in Mumbai, was apprehended by Crime Branch, Additional Commissioner (Crime) Neeraj Thakur said.

He was residing in Lado Sarai under a fake identity.

The arrest came yesterday after police received an input that he would come near Lado Sarai Bus Terminal in Mehrauli.

No politics involved in Howard’s rejection: Pawar

Singapore, July 01: Barely a few hours after taking over as ICC President, Sharad Pawar today sought to downplay the controversial rejection of former Australian Premier John Howard as a Vice President candidate, saying there was no political connotation to the issue.

Addressing his first press conference as the top official of the game’s governing body, Pawar said they have asked Australian and New Zealand Boards to find another candidate and submit it to the ICC by August 31.

US creates high-tech military court at Guantanamo

Guantanamo Bay (Cuba), Jul 01: The US, which is yet to decide the fate of Guantanamo Bay detention centre, has created one of the most high-tech military courts to try key terror suspects after taking a cue from a Canadian court which heard the Air India Kanishka bombing case.

The electronic equipment in “Courtroom No 2” is worth four million dollars, according to the US military here who put the total cost of the “multidefendant” court at 12 million dollars.

Gold trades marginally down on lower global trend

New Delhi, July 01: Gold prices traded marginally lower by Rs 10, or 0.05 per cent, to Rs 18,842 per ten gram in futures market today owing to slack demand at existing higher levels amid weakening global trend.

Trading sentiment turned weak, as gold declined in global markets after completing the best quarterly advance since the end of 2007, amid speculation investors don’t believe further gains are imminent.

At the Multi Commodity Exchange, gold for August contract lost Rs 10, or 0.05 per cent, to Rs 18,842 per ten gram, with an open interest of 22,012 lots.

Mumbai, July 01: After unsuccessfully giving Cricket Board (BCCI) secretary N Srinivasan 48 hours’ time to recuse from any disciplinary proceedings against him, suspended IPL commissioner Lalit Modi is deciding the future course of action, said his legal counsel Mehmood Abdi today.

“We gave Mr Srinivsan 48 hours to recuse himself and to alter the agenda of the July 3 Special General Body meeting.

We have not got a reply (from Srinivasan) in this regard. We are watching the developments and will take appropriate action at appropriate time,” Abdi told PTI.

Mecca Masjid blast: Gupta in CBI custody from tomorrow

Hyderabad, July 01: A local court today remanded Mecca Masjid blast case accused Devendra Gupta in CBI custody for seven days.

Gupta, also an accused in the Ajmer blast case, will be in CBI custody from tomorrow till July 8.

The court passed the orders after CBI filed a petition seeking custodial interrogation of Gupta in connection with the Mecca Masjid blast case.

Another accused in the case Lokesh Sharma, who allegedly conspired to carry out explosion in the masjid, is presently in CBI custody till July 9.

Court to hear RRB scam case tomorrow

Hyderabad, July 01: A special court here today posted to July 2 the hearing of CBI’s petition seeking police custody of S N Sharma, the suspended chairman of the Railway Recruitment Board (Mumbai), and others involved in the alleged multi-crore recruitment scam.

The court also posted the hearing of the bail applications filed by the accused to July 6.

CBI, after arresting Sharma and G Sethi, the senior divisional personnel officer at Raipur, sought 10-day custody of the duo for interrogation.

Bodies of slain CRPF jawans taken to native states

Guwahati/Bhubaneswar/Patna, July 01: Poignant scenes unfolded as the bodies of the CRPF jawans killed in Tuesday’s brutal Naxal attack in Chhattisgarh were today brought to their native states where they were given guard of honour and floral tributes were paid by senior leaders and officials.

While coffins of six jawans were taken to Guwahati, the bodies of eight others were flown to Bhubaneshwar and three to Patna.

Gold moves up on retail buying, silver eases

Mumbai, July 01: Gold prices advanced at the bullion market here today on renewed buying retailers and jewellers supported by firming trend in global markets.

On the other hand, silver eased due to weak industrial offtake.

Standard gold (99.5 purity) gained further by Rs 25 per ten grams to end at Rs 18,855 from yesterday’s closing level of Rs 18,830.

Pure gold (99.9 purity) also firmed up by Rs 30 per ten grams to settle at Rs 18,945 as against Rs 18,915 previously.

However, silver ready (.999 fineness) fell by Rs 25 per kilo to conclude at Rs 30,070 as against Rs 30,095.

Rupee ends 14 paise lower at 46.58/59 against US dollar

Mumbai, July 01: The Indian rupee ended 14 paise lower at 46.58/59 against the US dollar today on fresh dollar demand from banks, despite the weakness of the American currency overseas amid a fall in global stock markets.

At the Interbank Foreign Exchange market, the domestic currency opened lower at 46.68/69 per dollar from the overnight closing level of 46.44/45 per dollar.

It dropped further to 46.79 per dollar before ending the day at 46.58/59 per dollar. The rupee moved in a range of 46.49 to 46.79 against the dollar during the day.

Model was not in depression: her family

Mumbai, July 01: Super model Viveka Babajee was in a relationship with stock analyst Gautam Vora and the two were contemplating marriage before she committed suicide, her family claimed today trashing Vora’s claim that they were just good friends.

Breaking their silence since Babajee’s suicide on June 25, her family also rubbished suggestions that the former Miss Mauritius was suffering from depression and said they would weigh the option of pressing abetment to suicide charge against Vora if investigation pointed in that direction.

Himanshu Shukla named Ahmedabad crime branch DCP

Ahmedabad, July 01: Himanshu Shukla was today named as the Deputy Commissioner of Police Ahmedabad crime branch, a post that was lying vacant following the arrest of suspended DCP Abhay Chudasama in April in connection with the alleged fake encounter of Sohrabuddin Sheikh and killing of his wife.

Shukla, the Kheda Superintendent of Police, would be taking the new charge following a transfer order issued by the Gujarat home department, an official statement said here.

Besides Shukla, nine other IPS officers have also been transferred.

‘Kidnapped’ woman spotted in Bareilly; wanted to convert

New Delhi, July 01: A woman boutique owner from Nagpur, who was allegedly kidnapped from Dilli Haat here, was spotted in Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh and brought back to the national capital, police said today.

Varsha was reported missing from Dilli Haat from June 25 by her husband.

“Varsha was inclined towards to a particular religion and wanted to convert which was not agreed to by the husband. It was further revealed that she was constantly in touch with several people in Lucknow and Bareilly.

BJP demands fresh Assembly polls in Jharkhand

Ranchi, July 01: The BJP today demanded fresh Assembly elections to install a popular government in President’s rule-bound Jharkhand.

“President’s rule means central rule and the Congress is ruling the state. So elections are necessary for (installing) a popular government,” BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi said at a press conference here.

He, however, evaded questions whether his party was not responsible for imposition of President’s rule, saying, “You (mediapersons) know the sequence very well.”
