Congress downplays Pawar’s request to PM

New Delhi, July 05: Congress today downplayed the request of ICC President and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for reducing the burden on him and said his wish could be complied with.

“Whatever is his wish…. Politics should not be brought in here. It (the statement) has to be seen from a human angle about a person who recently underwent a surgery,” a senior party leader said on condition of anonymity.

12th Slam title special: Paes

New Delhi, July 05: India’s Leander Paes today described his 12th Grand Slam title triumph at the Wimbledon mixed doubles as a “wonderful” feeling which holds a “special” place in his heart.

“It is wonderful to be in my 23rd Grand Slam final. It is a lot of fun. Days like these reminds me what hard work is all about. It is really special,” Paes said.

Paes notched up his 12th Grand Slam title when he and his Zimbabwean partner Cara Black clinched the Wimbledon mixed doubles crown after defeating South African-American pair of Wesley Moodie and Lisa Raymond 6-4, 7-6 (5) late last night.

SC dismisses urea scam accused wife’s petition

New Delhi, July 05: With 63-year old Brazil-born multi-crore urea scam accused A E Pinto having died, the Supreme Court today dismissed as “infructuous” the petition earlier filed by his wife Eugenia Teles seeking adequate medical treatment for him.

A Bench of Justices Aftab Alam and R M Lodha dismissed the petition after taking on record the fact that the accused, who was facing the trial for the past 12 years, died on May 24.

Top NDA leaders among 8,000 held in Bihar

Patna, July 05: About 8,000 people, including top NDA leaders like BJP general secretary Ravishankar Prasad, Bihar BJP president C P Thakur and his JD(U) counterpart Vijay Choudhary, were arrested here while enforcing the nation-wide bandh against the hike in petroleum products.

JD(U) Rajya Sabha members Shivanand Tiwari and Upendra Kushwaha were arrested when they along with hundreds of supporters blocked the busy Dakbungalow Road crossing here, official sources said.

The leaders were whisked away in a bus to a camp jail at Gardanibagh where they would be detained till this evening.

Muslim Woman, daughter stripped, thrashed

Muzaffargarh, July 05: Fourteen people are reported to have stripped naked a woman and her daughter on Saturday and thrashed them in the presence of a large number of people in Shehr Sultan, a town near Mirwala.

Sources said the suspects got hold of 50-year-old Allah Wasai and her 14-year-old daughter Ashraf Mai when they came out of their home in Berwali to go to their fields.

They then proceeded to teach the women “a lesson for the wrongdoing of Allah Wasai’s son”.

Bulandshahar BJP leader kidnapped

Lucknow, July 05: A BJP leader of Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh was allegedly kidnapped when he went for morning walk today.

ADG (Law and Order) Brij Lal told newspersons here that Sudhir Kumar Garg, a resident of Brahmanandanpuri area of Bulandshahr who also runs a shop in the Mandi, had gone for morning walk and did not return home.

At around 8.30 am, he called from his mobile informing his family that he had been kidnapped, after which his son lodged an FIR with the Kotwali police, the ADG said.

Food inflation to fall to 5-6pc in due course: Fin Secy

New Delhi, July 05: The government today said food inflation, which is on a decline, will be in an “acceptable” range of 5-6 per cent in due course, on a day when the entire Opposition called a national strike against fuel price rise.

“Food inflation is going down. It will take some time before it really comes into a range which is acceptable to the government and which is good for the people,” Finance Secretary Ashok Chawla told reporters on the sidelines of a conference on state highways here.

Brits attack on Islamic tag

London, July 05: More than two-thirds of Islamism-related terrorism offences or suicide attacks in the UK over the last 10 years were perpetrated by British citizens, according to a report published.

Some 69% of such incidents from 1999 to 2009 were carried out by Britons, the study by think-tank The Centre for Social Cohesion found.

Almost half (46%) were committed by individuals of a south central Asian ancestry, while the second and third most frequent regions of origin were eastern Africa (16%) and northern Africa (13%).

Chandrababu among many arrested in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, July 05: Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president N Chandrababu Naidu and leaders of Left parties were arrested while holding protests against price hike here on Monday.

Naidu was taken into custody along with several TDP leaders and activists when they staged a road block in the busy Ameerpet area.

Tension prevailed as Naidu’s supporters tried to resist his arrest for sometime. The protest caused a huge traffic jam in one of the main commercial areas in the city.

Abbas: No progress in indirect talks

Gaza, July 05: The Palestinian Authority (PA) has denied a breakthrough in indirect negotiations with Israel, saying the US-brokered talks have been ineffective so far.

“In fact there is no progress in negotiations, and the situation is still as it was,” dpa quoted acting PA Chief Mahmoud Abbas as saying during a stopover in Amman, responding to US reports which had earlier indicated a progress in the ongoing “proximity talks.”

MGM Hospital doctors stage dharna, demand salaries

Warangal, July 05: Doctors at the MGM Hospital in Warangal stepped up the pressure on the government to release their salaries by staging a dharna outside the hospital premises on Monday.

The doctors, including house surgeons complained that they have not been paid their salaries since the last three months.
The dharna by the doctors had affected the normal routine of the hospital and only patients with serious illnesses or life threatening injuries being taken care of.

Dubai, July 05: If you are still running Microsoft Windows XP SP2 (Service Pack 2), you have until July 13 to upgrade. The venerable SP2 version reaches the end of its life on July 13, after which there will be no more updates.

Microsoft will no longer shore up security weaknesses in computers using Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Windows 2000 operating systems after July 13.

Chinese Islamic militants setting up bases in Pak: Report

Beijing, July 05: An increasing number of militants of the East Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM) fighting for separation of China’s Muslim majority Xinjiang province were “fleeing to Pakistan and settling down there for future plots”, a state-run newspaper reported on Monday.

“According to latest reports, the ETIM has been in close collaboration with the Taliban and Osama bin Laden,” the China Daily said in its lead story on the first anniversary of the bloody riots in Xinjiang capital Urumqi in which an estimated 200 people were killed.

Sanctions won’t hurt Iran: Ahmadinejad

Tehran, July 05: Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says sanctions deal no blow to the country and only serve to safeguard Western powers.

“The recent round of the UN Security Council sanctions will not hurt Iran. Such moves are aimed at safeguarding the West and defending the existence of Western powers,” said Ahmadinejad in the opening ceremony of a major steel project in the city of Bonab in the northwestern province of East Azarbaijan.

“Bullying powers know that no room will remain for them in the world if the Iranian nation mounts its efforts,” he added.

Turkey to cut ties with defiant Israel

Ankara, July 05: Turkey says it will sever diplomatic ties with Israel unless it apologizes over the attack on a Gaza aid convoy and the death of nine Turks in the deadly onslaught.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu renewed the call for a formal apology from Israeli leaders on Monday, saying his country’s airspace will be closed to all Israeli military flights, AFP reported.

Shabana recovering, will be discharged soon: Javed Akhtar

Mumbai, July 05: Actress and activist Shabana Azmi, who was admitted to Jaslok hospital after she complained of pain below her left ear, will be discharged from hospital in two days, says husband Javed Akhtar.

“She was suffering from acute pain under her left ear. Now she is all right. She is in the hospital. They have controlled the pain, but she still has fever because of the pain. I think by today or tomorrow she will be discharged,” Akhtar told IANS.

The the 54-year-old was admitted Wednesday.

US asks Japan for cash to move base

Okinawa, July 05: In the wake of a decision to relocate a controversial US airbase on the Japanese island of Okinawa, a report says Washington has asked Tokyo to shoulder millions of dollars in cost for the transfer of the base.

According to Japan’s Kyodo news agency, diplomatic sources from both sides revealed that US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates made a request for several hundred million dollars last month for the relocation.

The US demand came after officials assessed that accommodation and equipment costs were likely to exceed the first estimates.

BJP Wants Sonia To Reveal Stand On Telangana

Hyderabad, July 05: Taking serious exception to the Chief Minister, Mr K Rosaiah’s statement that the bifurcation of the State was not advisable, the BJP has demanded that the AICC president and UPA chairperson, Ms Sonia Gandhi, and the Congress State affairs in-charge, Mr Veerappa Moily, to give a clarification on Telangana issue.

It may be recalled that Mr Rosaiah, while chatting with the media on the occasion of his birthday, had observed that basically he was against bifurcation of the State and that development was the only answer to the separate Telangana movement.

She waited 30 years to see her son

Hyderabad, July 05: For 30 long years, Cherukuri Karuna, mother of slain Maoist leader Cherukuri Rajkumar alias Azad, waited to see her son.

But when the wait was over, all the septuagenarian was able to see was his lifeless body. She sat beside it for hours together receiving sympathisers, former Naxalites, writers, poets and journalists.

Azad was cremated this afternoon at the Punjagutta cremation grounds as the air was rent with slogans proclaiming that none could kill the man’s ideology.
