Shah Rukh narrates his ‘lungi’ experience on social networking site

Mumbai, July 29: Superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who is known for his impeccable style-sense, is all set to do something off-beat now. Apart from donning the one crore superhero costume in the sci-fi thriller ‘Ra.One’, the actor will be seen wearing a lungi for the film. Shah Rukh himself revealed his ‘lungi-plans’ through his post on a micro blogging site.

The actor naughtily wrote on a micro blogging site, “Wore lungi for a scene. It kind of gets windy & cool inside after a while coupled with the fear that it may open. Tense & relaxed coexistence.”

Karnataka bans iron ore exports

Bangalore, July 29: Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa on Thursday announced a ban on export of iron ore from Karnataka , saying that it was the only way to stop illegal mining in the state.

He also clamped a ban on transport of iron to other states. Yeddyurappa told reporters here that the ban will be in force till the completion of a state Lok Ayukta (ombudsman) probe into illegal mining in the last 10 years, between 2000 and 2010.

Centre opposes Natwar’s plea in apex court

New Delhi, July 29: The Centre today opposed in the Supreme Court former External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh’s plea seeking its direction to allow him to go through all the documents relating to the United Nation’s “oil-for-food” scam allegedly involving him and his son.

Solicitor General Gopal Subramaniam, appearing in the apex court for the Centre, contended that the former union minister cannot be allowed to inspect the 83,000-page documents.

Senior citizen arrested for duping one

Mumbai, July 29: A senior citizen, who impersonated as a top Indian Air Force official, was today arrested for allegedly duping a 24-year-old man from Gujarat on the pretext of securing him job in the United Kingdom, Railway Police said.

Akbar Ibrahim Khan (73) was apprehended from suburban Andheri after a manhunt was launched for him following a complaint by Kunal Gandhi of Gujarat yesterday, they said.

During the probe, it was found that Khan had also allegedly cheated an unemployed youth in May on the pretext of securing him a job at Mumbai airport and took Rs 5,000 from the victim.

Bholakpur case: 5 Water Board officers arrested

Hyderabad, July 29: Five officials of Hyderabad Water Board were today arrested in connection with the death of 13 persons, who died after drinking contaminated water in Bholakpur area last year.

“Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board Chief General Manager Manohar Babu and four other officials were arrested after a case under Section 304A (causing death by negligence) and Section 270 (malignant act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life) of IPC was registered against them,” a senior police officer told PTI.

Cameron praises PM’s wise leadership

New Delhi, July 29: British Prime Minister David Cameron today showered praise on his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh and said he could not wait to come back and take further the relations between the two countries.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to praise your wise, essential and thoughtful leadership that you have given to us and myself in the G-20 and the great way you are leading this incredible country and this massive democracy,” he said while addressing a joint press conference with Singh.

PM calls Andhra, Maharashtra chief ministers on Babhali row

New Delhi, July 29: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has called a meeting of chief ministers of Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra Aug 2 to discuss the row over the Babhali dam project between the riverine states, official sources said.

The sources said Thursday that the meeting was aimed at addressing apprehensions among political parties in Andhra Pradesh on Maharashtra not sticking to its commitment about the project following Supreme Court directions.

Mother killed her 8 babies

Paris, July 29: A French nursing assistant today confessed to murdering EIGHT of her newborn babies because “she did not want any more children”.

Dominique Cottrez, 45, mum to two grown-up daughters, is facing life in prison for the crimes which took place over almost 20 years.

She “systematically” strangled the babies after refusing to visit a doctor for contraception and then giving birth in secret.

All of the children, who were killed between 1988 and around 2007, were wrapped up in black bin liners. Police have not ruled out finding more.

SC orders reinstatement of sacked IFS officer

New Delhi, July 29: The Supreme Court had directed the Centre to forthwith reinstate a probationary IFS officer Mahaveer Singhvi who was sacked by the Ministry of External Affairs on charges of stalking a woman and attempting to bribe officials in a case.

A Bench headed by Justice Altamas Kabir, while upholding the Delhi High Court’s August 2008 judgement which had directed reinstatment of Singhvi, also asked the government to pay him Rs 25,000 as costs for litigation.

Will encourage Pakistan to eliminate groups like LeT: Cameron

New Delhi, July 29: British Prime Minister David Cameron Thursday said Pakistan needs to do more to crackdown and eliminate terror groups like the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operating from its territory.

“It is is not acceptable as I have said that there should be within Pakistan existence of terror groups that cause terrorism not just within Pakistan, but also in other places in the world,” Cameron said at a joint press conference with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Etihad meets safety standards

Abu Dhabi, July 29: Etihad Airways has, for the third consecutive time, passed a rigorous aviation industry safety audit.

The airline met all required standards after a team from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Operational Safety Audit – IOSA – examined the airline’s safety procedures and processes in detail.

The audit seeks to ensure that airlines are compliant with safety requirements and recommended practices determined by IATA. It is the most important examination of Etihad’s business to take place.

EC to roll out guidelines to control money in politics: Quraishi

New Delhi, July 29: The Election Commission will soon come out with a set of guidelines to tighten procedures over role of money in polls as part of electoral reforms that will also include deregistration of political parties.

Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi, who would assume charge as the new Chief Election Commissioner on Friday, said the Government has indicated expediting some of the electoral reforms pending with it.

“The draft of the guidelines is ready. By end of August they will be in place,” Quraishi said in an interview.

Qureshi could have handled press conference better: PM

New Delhi, July 29: In his first reaction on the talks between India and Pakistan earlier this month, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Thursday that Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi could have “handled” the press conference in a better way.

“I think the way the press conference was handled at the end of the visit by the foreign minister of Pakistan could I think have been avoided, because it detracts from a large element of agreements reached between the two foreign ministers,” Manmohan Singh said at a joint press conference with British Prime Minister David Cameron.

Chawla demits office as CEC

New Delhi, July 29: Navin Chawla today demitted office as the Chief Election Commissioner after a 15-month tenure at the helm at the end of a controversial tenure when he faced an unprecedented demand for his removal by his predecessor N Gopalswamy.

Chawla was given a farewell by the Election Commission staff in which Election Commissioners S Y Quraishi and V Sampath were present. Quraishi will be taking over as the new CEC tomorrow. In the afternoon, senior officials hosted him a lunch.

Food inflation down to a single digit at 9.67 per cent

New Delhi, July 29: Food inflation fell to single digit at 9.67 per cent for the first time this year at a time when the government is facing a concerted Opposition attack on rising food and fuel prices.

Inflation fell by 2.80 percentage points for the week ended July 17 from 12.47 per cent in the previous week, as prices of vegetables, especially potatoes and onions,declined.

On a yearly basis, potatoes became cheaper by over 46 per cent and onions by over 10 per cent. Overall vegetable prices fell 14.77 per cent, according to data released by the government today.

EC pulls up TRS chief for remarks against AP Minister

Hyderabad, July 29: The Election Commission today expressed strong displeasure over the alleged comments made by TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao against Andhra Pradesh Home Minister P Sabita Reddy and other leaders during the campaign for by-elections to 12 Assembly seats in Telangana.

Three youths arrested in Assamese girl gangrape case

Rewari (Haryana), July 29: Three youths were arrested today in connection with the alleged gangraped of a 15-year- old girl from Assam in Qutubpur colony here, police said.

The arrested were produced in the court of Judicial Magistrate Vikas Gupta who remanded them to 14-day judicial custody, they said.

Last month, the trio, who used to reside in the same house as tenants where the girl also lived, gangraped her when the her husband was away, police said.

Court asks DCP to explain non-appearance of child

New Delhi, July 29: A Delhi court today directed a senior police officer to appear before it tomorrow to explain failure of the department to ensure appearance of a minor boy in order to hand over his custody to the mother.

The Guardianship Judge expressed his dissatisfaction over the inability of the police to produce the 20-month-old child who has allegedly been taken away by his father.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (South west) was asked to appear before the court tomorrow.

Four Maoists held on murder charge

Keonjhar, July 29: Four suspected maoists were today arrested for allegedly killing a villager here, police said.

The rebels were arrested for the death of one Durga Devgan (50) of Khajuria Pancham village on June 22.

The arrested maoist cadres also belonged to the same village as the victim, police said.

The accused persons, also involved in other offences in the area, were taken to district police headquarters for interrogation.

Govt appoints members to new Law Commission

New Delhi, July 29: Nearly a year after the new Law Commission was constituted, the government today appointed its members to make the panel functional.

The Government had constituted the 19th Law Commission on September one last year and had appointed Justice P V Reddi as its Chairman in March this year.

The panel advises government on complex legal issues but its recommendations are not binding.

20 pistols, 44 magazines seized in Bihar

Munger, July 29: Five persons, allegedly involved in illegal trade of firearms, were arrested with 20 9mm pistols and 40 magazines during a raid at a hotel here today, police said.

Later, acting on information provided by the arrested persons, police also unearthed an illegal mini gun factory at Khanka village here, they said.

Four pistol-making machines, auto lathe machine, two grinding machines, two drilling machines and 27 unfinished pistols were seized from the factory, they said.

While the factory owner managed to flee, two gun-makers were captured from the spot, they said.

Kapil Dev bowls to British PM

New Delhi, July 29: British Prime Minister David Cameron today showed his skills with the cricket bat as he played out a few deliveries bowled to him by the legendary Kapil Dev.

Kapil Dev, India’s only world cup wining captain, sent down a few ball to the British premier when he visited the national stadium to have a look at the Coomnwealth Games venues.

National stadium, which hosted the hockey World Cup in early this year, is a venue for the CWG hockey event also.

Cameron had words of appreciation for the renovated facility and also wished the organisers success for the Games.

Inter-state gang busted, five arrested

Lakhimpur (UP), July 29: An inter-state gang of auto lifters was today busted by the special operation group (SOG) team with the arrest of five persons from the city area here, police said.

Acting on a tip off, the police team arrested the five persons and recovered seven stolen bikes from them, Circle Officer (City) Basant Lal said.

“These persons used to steal motor-bikes from various districts of the state and sold them at throwaway prices in neighbouring Nepal,” Lal said.

CBI grills Amit Shah for the second day

Ahmedabad, July 29: The CBI today grilled former Gujarat minister Amit Shah inside the Sabarmati Central Jail for the second day in connection with the fake encounter of Sohrabuddin Sheikh.

A four-member team of the Central agency is questioning Shah, CBI sources said here.

The sources said Shah was “not cooperating” with the investigation despite an assurance to this effect given by his lawyers before the court.

The BJP leader, facing murder, kidnapping and extortion charges, among others, has been lodged in the jail after his arrest on Sunday last.

K T S Tulsi to represent CBI in Sohrabuddin case

New Delhi, July 29: Senior advocate K T S Tulsi will appear for the CBI in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case, in which former Gujarat Minister Amit Shah is an accused and is being represented by eminent lawyer Ram Jethmalani.

An additional solicitor general would also appear on behalf of the Central investigating agency for which a notification will be issued shortly, official sources said.

Jethmalani recently became a member of the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan on a ticket given by BJP. His candidature was reportedly backed by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
