Zaheer to fly to Johannesburg to heal injured shoulder

New Delhi, July 10: India paceman Zaheer Khan is leaving for South Africa today to get his injured shoulder treated and, if possible, watch tomorrow’s FIFA World Cup final in Johannesburg.

“Leaving for Joburg today, visiting Rosebank sports injury rehab clinic, the place where I did my shoulder rehab last year after surgery,” he wrote on his twitter page.

“Trying to catch the World Cup final as well in Joburg , very last minute though,” tweeted the left-arm seamer who would be rooting for Spain in tomorrow’s final against the Netherlands.

Gehlot meets steel tycoon Mittal

Jaipur, July 10: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot during his 10-day foreign tour met steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal who expressed his desire to invest in the state.

Gehlot, accompanied by a high-level delegation, visited New York and London and returned to the state capital today.

The delegation during its 10-day tour took part in a meeting of the Rajasthan Association of North America in New York and met NRIs from the state in London, a state government official said.

Turkey wants handover of 250 militants

Turkey, July 10: Turkish daily Hurriyet reported on Saturday that Ankara gave out a list of 248 PKK rebels to officials in Baghdad and Washington, demanding the immediate handover of the militants.

The list included senior PKK chiefs such as Murat Karayilan, Cemil Bayik, and Duran Kalkan.

The call was made shortly after military and civilian leaders in Turkey voiced growing frustration with Baghdad and the Iraq-based US military over their inaction in confronting the PKK.

Cong conspiring against RJD-LJP: Lalu

Patna, July 10: RJD president Lalu Yadav today alleged that Congress is conspiring to harm the prospect of RJD-LJP alliance in the coming Bihar Assembly elections by planting reports about possible inclusion of LJP chief Ramvilas Paswan in the Manmohan Singh ministry.

Fresh warrants against Kasab, Ansari in 26/11 trial

Islamabad, July 10: A Pakistani anti-terrorism court conducting the trial of seven Mumbai attack suspects today issued fresh arrest warrants for Ajmal Kasab and Fahim Ansari even as prime accused LeT commander Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi submitted an application for bail.

Judge Malik Muhammad Akram Awan, who is conducting the trial behind closed doors at the Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi for security reasons, heard arguments by the prosecution and defence including on Kasab and Ansari, who are currently in custody in India.

Pacheco seeks bail, claims he is unwell

Panaji, July 10: Embattled former Goa minister Fransisco Pacheco today sought bail saying further stay in police custody will affect his health and cited medical reports to vouch for the veracity of his claim that he was unwell.

“The applicant (Pacheco) is sick. He is tense and is unable to bear the tension that he is in police custody,” the bail plea said.

The petition by the NCP MLA, who was arrested by Crime Branch in connection with death of his female friend Nadia Tarrado, on July 8 would be heard by the court on Monday.

Keep industry off cultivable farm land: Pawar

Kolkata July 10: Food and agriculture minister Sharad Pawar today said while his ministry is not against industry, it is against acquisition of agricultural land with assured crop yields and irrigation facilities.

Addressing the media here on the sidelines of a workshop on ‘Bringing the Green Revolution to the Eastern Region,’ Pawar pointed out that as much as 82 percent of the farmers own less than an acre and 60 percent of such land have no assured water supply.

“Therefore, the land which gives a good crop and the land which has good water supply will have to be preserved.

Garib Rath blast suspect arrested

Guwahati, July 10: A NDFB militant suspected to have been involved in the July 8 blast which caused the derailing of the Kolkata-bound Garib Rath Express was arrested in Assam’s Chirang district today.

Official sources said here patrolling troops of the 15 Dogra Regiment acting on a tip off apprehended the militant identified as Edward Shrampani.

Suspected NDFB militants planted the powerful bomb on the railway tracks at Gossaigaon killing a child and injuring 13 other passengers of the Garib Rath Express, the sources said.

Terrorists’ arms cache recovered in Assam

Assam, July 10: A large cache of arms and ammunition, including 28 AK-47 rifles belonging to separatist outfit Dima Halam Daogah’s Jewel Gorolsa faction (DHD-J), has been recovered by security personnel in southern Assam, police officials said here Saturday.

“Acting on a tip off, a joint team of army and local police raided a DHD-J rebels’ hideout at Thana Lambra in North Cachar Hills district and unearthed the sophisticated weapons Friday night,” a police official told reporters. The district is 300 km south of Assam’s main city Guwahati.

Mediapersons stage protest march

Srinagar, July 10: Journalists today staged a demonstration here to protest what they said curbs imposed by the government on media in Kashmir.

Before staging the protest at Pratap Park, the mediapersons decided to suspend publications of newspapers in Kashmir unless steps were taken to lift the restrictions.

This decision was unanimously taken at a joint meeting of various representative bodies of the media in Kashmir, a statement issued by the mediapersons said.

The meeting also condemned what they said the curbs imposed on cable TV networks in Kashmir.

Lightning kills nine in Bihar

Purnia/Nawada (Bihar), July 10: Nine persons were killed and five others sustained burn injuries after being struck by lightning in Bihar’s Purnia, Nawada, Madhepura and Araria districts which experienced heavy monsoon rains today.

Purnia District Magistrate N Shravan Kumar said while one person each was killed in Rupaouli and Jamgarh, lightning claimed two other lives in Dhamdaha in the district.

In Nawada, three persons were killed and another was injured when they were struck by lightning in a field near Pakribarawa village in the district, officials said.

Ban agri futures, set up market infra: Chouhan to Pawar

Bhopal, July 10: Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has urged Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar to either prohibit or control futures trading in agriculture commodities till efficient physical markets are set up across the country.

“The role of futures trading in agriculture commodities need a re-look as price rise of food items persist,” Chouhan, in a letter told Pawar.

Food inflation stood at 12.92 percent for the week ended June 19, due to higher prices of essential commoties. As a result, the middle class and poor are suffering, he said.

US got a good deal in spy swap: Biden

Washington, July 10: US Vice President Joe Biden has said America definitely got a “good deal” in the US-Russia spy swap. The swap saw 10 spies working for Russia in the US returned to Moscow and four alleged agents were sent to the US in exchange.

Biden told chat show host Jay Leno Friday night that the US “didn’t get a raw deal from Russia” in the biggest spy swap since the Cold War, the Telegraph reported.

Leno asked Biden during “The Tonight Show” why the US was sending 10 accused spies back to Russia while getting only four in return.

Brazilian footballer’s girlfriend ‘fed to dogs’

London, July 10: A missing former girlfriend of a Brazilian footballer was strangled to death and her body was cut up and then fed to dogs, police said.

Eliza Samudio, 25, was the former girlfriend of Bruno Fernandes, 25, goalkeeper for Brazilian club Flamengo. She went missing nearly a month ago.

Samudio was taken by force from a hotel in Rio de Janeiro on the day of her disappearance and was strangled in Belo Horizonte city, police said, adding that her body was cut up and parts were fed to dogs, while the rest was buried in concrete.

Taliban massacre 11 Pakistani Shias

Taliban, July 10: Suspected Taliban militants have killed at least 11 Pakistani Shia Muslim tribesmen and injured several others in Afghanistan’s eastern border province of Paktia.

According to a local official, three others were injured in the attack which took place in the border town of Chamkani on Saturday.

The official said the assailants then opened fire on a bus carrying the bodies of the victims of an earlier raid.

Afghan police officials have launched an investigation into the incident.

Congress terms bandh by RJD, LJP a political gimmick

New Delhi, July 10: New and Renewable Energy Minister Farooq Abdullah Saturday separately met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Home Minister P.Chidambaram and requested assistance so that his son and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah could tide over the volatile situation in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.

Officials at the Jammu and Kashmir House, the official state guest house here, told IANS that Abdullah assured the prime minister and the home minister that he would assist Omar in restoring normalcy in the Valley.

Women give birth twin of 10 pounds each

Cincinnati, July 10: A family in Cincinnati is welcoming two bundles of joy, and they’re no featherweights. A mother recently delivered a set of twins, weighing nearly 20 pounds combined.

“They seem to look more and more alike each time we look at them,” said Tamara Kankowski.

It’s too early to tell if they are identical. Tests will be complete in a couple of weeks. But it is tough telling them apart.

“This is baby A. This is Lucas Benjamin. He was 10 pounds, two ounces. This is Dillon Matthew and he was nine pounds, nine ounces,” said Tamara.

One killed, 24 injured as bus collides with truck

Firozabad, July 10: One person was killed and 24 others were injured, four of them critically, when the bus in which they were travelling collided with a truck near Kanaita under Rasoolpur police station area here this afternoon. The bus carrying pilgrims from a Mazar in Jalesar area was returning when it met with the accident on the national highway, police said.

Four of the seriously injured were referred to the Agra SN medical college hospital while the others were being treated at the district hospital here, police added.

Thinking of setting up commercial courts: CJI

New Delhi, July 10: Chief Justice of India S H Kapadia Saturday said setting up of commercial courts to achieve quick disposal of cases is being considered as other judges of the apex court favoured promotion of alternative dispute resolution mechanism to reduce the burden on courts.

Speaking at a seminar on mediation, Justice Kapadia blamed lack of settlement culture in the country for the rise in pendency of cases and people not preferring out-of-court resolution of disputes.

“We are thinking of setting up commercial courts,” he said.
