Secundrabad, July 10: More women cops will stand guard for the upcoming Mahankali Bonalu Jatara. “The decision has been taken as security of women and children needs special attention,” city police commissioner AK Khan has said. The Secunderabad Bonalu is on August 1 and 2.

Cops make no progress in US woman’s rape case

Hyderabad, July 10: The alleged rape of an American woman in Banjara Hills is giving sleepless nights to the police brass who have so far failed to crack the case even as pressure is building on them from the US Consulate.

Be that as it may, police commissioner A K Khan said giving “undue publicity” to this particular case was not proper as it was an `international’ issue and may affect the city’s reputation.

According to sources in the investigation, nearly 30 suspects have been questioned so far but no progress has been made.

Nigerian police arrests man carrying 70 dead babies

Abuja, July 10: A man carrying bags containing more than 70 dead babies has been arrested in Nigeria’s economic capital Lagos.

“We have started questioning the man and we have also invited the people he claimed were his accomplices but it appears to be a corruption case not human trafficking nor ritual, nor murder,” Lagos State Police Spokesman Frank Mba told PTI.

According to police, the man has told them that he was employed by the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) to take the corpses to a cemetery. Police have asked some LUTH staff to appear for questioning.

Sunita Williams headed for the stars again

Japan, July 10: Indian American astronaut Sunita Williams, who holds the record of the longest spaceflight (195 days) for female space travellers, will head for the stars once again in June 2012.

Williams, 44, would take over as station commander at the International Space Station that was her home in the sky from Dec 9, 2006 to June 22, 2007.

She will be joined on the Soyuz 31 flight to the space station by flight engineers Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko and Japanese astronaut Akihiko Hoshide, the space agencies of the three nations announced Friday.

Girls suspended for abusive words on facebook

New Delhi, July 10: A city-based convent school has suspended six girl students of class X and XII for a week for allegedly using ‘abusive’ language on the social networking site Facebook.

After learning about the incident, the district education officer has ordered an enquiry into the incident.

However, it was not clear when the students were suspended.

713 candidates in fray for Andhra by-election

Hyderabad, July 10: A total of 713 candidates are in fray for the July 27-bypoll to the 12 Assembly seats in Andhra Pradesh.

After scrutiny today, there were 713 candidates whose nomination papers were found valid, state Chief Electoral Officer I B Subba Rao told reporters here.

The last date for withdrawal of nominations is July 12.

Among the political bigwigs contesting the polls is Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President D Srinivas.

He is contesting from Nizamabad Urban Assembly constituency.

Homeopathic drug may prevent swine flu

New Delhi, July 10: Homeopathic medicines have been suggested to prevent swine flu by the The Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy.

At a meeting called by the department of AYUSH (Ayur Department of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy), methods for prevention of flu like illness was taken up by the members.

“The experts suggested that homeopathic medicine ‘Arsenicum album’ could be taken as preventive medicine against flu like illnesses including swine flu,” a health ministry official said.

Army on standby till next week: Omar

New Delhi, July 10: Pointing out that the army has not been deployed in violence-hit Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said Saturday he hoped to pull out the armed forces from “standby duties” next week.

“There has been no major incident since Friday” when the curfew was lifted to allow people to offer prayers at night on the occasion of Shab-e-Mehraj, Omar said in an interview to NDTV news channel in Srinagar.

Maharashtra to get six new CBI courts

Mumbai, July 10: Six new special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) courts are likely to become functional in Maharashtra by the end of 2010, taking their total number in the state to 11, a top official said here Saturday.

“The CBI had sent a proposal for creation of additional courts of special judges to the government of India. The government has accepted the proposal,” said CBI Director Ashwani Kumar, while speaking at a three-day conference here.

New Delhi, July 10: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K. Rosaiah Saturday said Congress MP Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy can dream and aspire for the chief minister’s post and that there is a method to it.

Dharamsala, July 10: A week after National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon visited Beijing, Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao held closed-door talks with the Dalai Lama here Saturday, with a Tibetan official saying “issues of common interest” were discussed.

The talks at the official palace of the Tibetan spiritual leader lasted about 90 minutes, said an official.

“At the closed-door meeting, high-ranking officials of the government-in-exile including its prime minister Samdhong Rinpoche participated,” added the official.

Army may be withdrawn early next week: Omar

Sumir Kaul Srinagar, July 10: The army, which was deployed in certain parts of Srinagar four days ago to assist the civil administration, may be withdrawn from the streets early next week, according to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

He told PTI the state government was using the army in the “extreme periphery” and not not more than six or eight columns of the army were used so far.
