Satyam case: Court stays proceedings

Hyderabad, July 29: In an important development, the metropolitan sessions judge (MSJ) on Wednesday stayed until Friday all further proceedings relating to the trial of the accused in the multi-crore Satyam accounting fraud case.

This is the first time that the trial, going on in the court of the chief metropolitan magistrate, has been halted.

Practicals claim life of student

Hyderabad, July 29: Practicals outside the college campus claimed the life of a civil engineering student at Golconda today. The student was surveying the ground levels with the help of a levelling staff when it reportedly came in contact with an overhead high-tension wire leading to his electrocution.

The deceased, Mohd Mujeebuddin (20), was a BE (civil) third-year student of the Vasavi College of Engineering at Ibrahimbagh under the Golconda police station limits. He was a resident of Basheerbagh. His father, Wahaduddin, also a civil engineer, works in Riyadh, police said.

Tintu, Mayookha shine at Asian All-Star Athletics Meet

New Delhi, July 29: India’s Tintu Luka and Mayookha Johney’s performance in the women’s 800 metres and long jump events respectively stood out on the first day of the Asian All-Star Athletics Meet, a test event for the Commonwealth Games, at the remodelled Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here Thursday.

The meet is in its third edition, but like in the past, has attracted very few top athletes of Asia.

India, Britain to augment cooperation in education

New Delhi, July 29: India and Britain Thursday decided to launch a new phase of the India-UK Education and Research Initiative, as they discussed prospects of further cooperation in the field of education.

According to a joint statement issued at the end of the visit of British Prime Minister David Cameron, the first phase of this jointly-funded initiative had helped establish over 400 collaborative ventures between Indian and British universities and schools between 2006 and 2011.

Russian girl fails to furnish bail bond, remand extended

Ropar, July 29: A Russian girl, arrested for alleged misuse of the passport of a German national and granted bail by a local court, could not be freed today as she failed to furnish personal bail bond and surety.

The judicial remand of Oliga Timoshik, who had been granted bail by Ropar Additional Sessions Judge Surinder Mohan on July 27, was then extended by the trial court to August 12.

The ASJ had ordered her to furnish personal bail bond of Rs one lakh and one surety in the like amount to the satisfaction of the trial court at Anandpur Sahib.

Doctor deposes before trial court in nun rape case

Cuttack (Orissa), July 29: A doctor, a government official and another witness today deposed before the court which is hearing the Kandhamal nun rape case.

Questioning the veracity of the report prepared by the doctor of Baliguda sub-divisional hospital, the defence lawyer asked, “How could the doctor examine a rape victim on August 25, 2008 when the requisition for it came two months later on October 1, 2008?”

India, Britain to cooperate in education

New Delhi, July 29: India and Britain Thursday discussed cooperation in education when Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal met his British counterpart, Minister of State for Universities and Science David Willets.

According to an official statement from the HRD ministry, the two sides in principle agreed to the exchange of research scholars. Sibal, however, pointed to the issue of equivalence of degrees which becomes a problem in the mobility of students.

Man posing as Punjab official held

Mohali (Punjab), July 29: A man posing as officer on special duty (OSD) to a Punjab minister has been arrested and fake identity cards of different government departments were recovered from him, police said Thursday.

According to police, Harvinder Singh was arrested Wednesday from a government school here.

He was posing as Parminder Singh, OSD to Education and Languages Minister Upinderjit Kaur. At the time of the arrest, an exam was going on in the school premises.

Goa Assembly committee for special cell to track Naxals

Panaji, July 29: Ad hoc committee of Goa Legislative Assembly today stressed the need for a special cell to monitor possible Maoist activities in the State.

The committee headed by Leader of Opposition Manohar Parrikar in its report on Home Affairs tabled before the House said there was a need to keep a check on the activities of labourers and immigrants working in the mining and tourism industries in the state.

Beauty parlour owner murdered, domestic help arrested

New Delhi, July 29: A 40-year-old beauty parlour owner was strangled to death in her south-east Delhi residence today allegedly by a domestic help whom her husband wanted to adopt as a son, police said.

The incident took place in Hari Nagar Ashram and the family’s domestic help Anil was arrested in this connection.

The woman, Meenakshi Sharma, was murdered between 3:30 am and 7:30 am, a senior police official said.

The murder came to light at around 7:30 am when her son Shivang (20) found her lying unconscious in her bedroom.

Orissa examines textbook after protest by JMM

Bhubaneswar/Ranchi, July 29: The Orissa government Wednesday said it is examining complaints over allegedly objectionable remark about the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) in a state text book, a decision that followed protests by the party.

‘It has come to our notice and we are examining it (the content in the book). We will take appropriate action soon,’ Madhu Sudan Padhi, secretary of the Orissa’s higher education department told IANS.

Lecturer attack case: 2 declared as proclaimed offenders

Kochi, July 29: A local court today declared as proclaimed offenders two accused in a case relating to an attack on a lecturer whose right hand was chopped off allegedly by activists of radical outfit Popular Front of India (PFI).

The two accused — K K Ali and Nazar — are absconding since the attack on T J Joseph, police said.

They were declared proclaimed offenders on the report of SIT probing the case.

Police had earlier issued lookout notice against Ali, Nazar and another accused Younus, who had already been arrested.

Toyota recalls 400,000 cars in US

New York, July 29: Japanese carmaker Toyota is recalling more than 400,000 cars in the US over fears of defects in the steering system, the company said Thursday.

The recall involves 373,000 Toyota Avalons sold between 2000 and 2004, and 39,000 2003-07 LX 470s from its luxury Lexus brand.

For the Avalons, there was a “possibility that the vehicle’s steering lock bar could break under certain conditions,” Toyota said in a statement. The Lexus defect involved the steering shaft, which Toyota said could disengage after a severe hit to the front wheels.

Government model schools still distant reality

New Delhi, July 29: The 6,000 Model schools to be set up by the Human Resource Development ministry is still a distant reality as data from the ministry shows that only two states have so far utilised the funds allocated for the project.

In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, HRD minister Kapil Sibal informed that 434 Model schools have been sanctioned for 12 states so far in the economically backward blocks.

According to the information given to the lower House, Punjab and Tamil Nadu are the only two states which have submitted the amount utilisation certificates to the centre.

Cameron did not get a meeting with Sonia

New Delhi, July 29: Despite making a specific request, British Prime Minister David Cameron did not get to have a meeting with United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi, who is said to be “out of station”.

Officials said that Britain had specifically asked India to schedule meetings with Sonia Gandhi, as well as her son and Member of Parliament, Rahul Gandhi.

But, party sources said that no meeting was scheduled as Sonia Gandhi “was out of station.” There was also no scheduled meeting with Rahul Gandhi.

One more dies of swine flu in Bengal, toll three

Kolkata, July 29: West Bengal recorded its third swine flu death this year with a 66-year-old man succumbing to the Influenza A HINI virus in a private hospital, health officials said Thursday.

Meanwhile, nine more people tested positive for the flu, taking the number of cases in the state this year to 91.

Six new cases of dengue in Delhi

New Delhi, July 29: Delhi has reported six new cases of dengue, taking the total number of people affected by the mosquito-borne disease to 41, an official said Thursday.

‘Six people have tested positive for dengue in Delhi. But there have been no deaths Thursday,’ N.K. Yadav, chief medical officer of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), told IANS.

The patients have been admitted to various hospitals of the city like Lady Hardinge, Batra and some hospitals under the MCD.

Delhi has so far reported one dengue death this year.

Opposition grills government over Israeli firm building hospital

Panaji, July 29: Opposition parties in Goa Thursday questioned the state government’s logic of allowing an Israeli defence equipment manufacturer to build a super specialty hospital under the public-private-partnership (PPP) model.

Speaking during question hour in the assembly, leader of opposition Manohar Parrikar said the Israel-based holding company, M/s Elbit India Hospitals Limited (EIHL), only had a marginal stake in health care.

Around 2,150 cases of mobile cloning reported in 2009-2010

New Delhi, July 29: Telecom service providers reported around 2,150 cases of misuse of mobile cloning in different parts of the country during 2009-2010, Telecom Minister A. Raja said in the Rajya Sabha Thursday.

‘The government has come to know through telecom service providers that approximately 2,150 cases of misuse of mobile cloning through duplication of subscriber identity in different parts of country have come to their notice during 2009-10,’ said Raja in the statement.

Mobile cloning refers to the act of copying the identity of one mobile telephone to another.

Sikhs protest harassment of youth in Kashmir

Jammu, July 29: Members of the Sikh community staged demonstrations across the Jammu region Thursday to protest the harassment of a Sikh youth in the Kashmir Valley who allegedly had his hair cut forcibly.

Sikh leaders led protests in Digiana, Miran Sahib, R.S. Pura and other parts of Jammu, raising slogans against the state government for its failure to ‘protect the community’ in the Valley following the incident in Malangpora area of Pulwama town.

The protesters also burnt tyres and staged sit-ins on the roads.

Kerala poll panel asks for report on bishop council letter

Thiruvananthapuram, July 29: Kerala’s state election commissioner has asked for a report on a letter by the Kerala Catholic Bishops Council (KCBC) asking people not to vote for independent candidates who are atheists in the upcoming local bodies poll.

State Election Commissioner (SEC) P. Kamalkutty has asked the Ernakulam district collector for a report on the KCBC letter read out in all churches after Sunday mass on July 18.

The letter asked the faithful not to vote for independent candidates who are atheists in the local bodies poll due to be held in September.
