‘Attacking Iran, incredibly destabilizing’

Washington, June 29: Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen warns that any military action against Iran would be “incredibly destabilizing” to the region.

The US and Israel understand that the use of force against Iran would be “incredibly destabilizing,” Mullen said addressing the Aspen Security Forum on Monday.

The top US military official, however, renewed allegations that Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons under the guise of peaceful nuclear work and said that that there is “no reason to trust” Iran.

Ban dissection in colleges, urges PETA

New Delhi, June 29: People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Tuesday urged the University Grants Commission (UGC) to ban dissection in zoology classes in universities and colleges.

The animals rights group along with some scientists and academics recommended that colleges should reduce animal dissection in zoology and life-science courses and work towards the implementation of non-animal teaching methods, according to its India campaigner Anuradha Srivastava.

Seven parties call for July 5 strike

Chennai, June 29: Seven opposition parties in Tamil Nadu led by the AIADMK Tuesday called a general strike July 5 to protest against the fuel price hike.

In a joint statement, the parties criticised the central government for not doing enough to check rising prices of food and other essential commodities.

The statement was signed by leaders of the AIADMK, MDMK, Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), AIMMK, All India Forward Bloc and INL.

Saina gets hero’s welcome

Hyderabad, June 29: India’s tennis icon Saina Nehwal was accorded a hero’s welcome Tuesday when she arrived here after winning three badminton titles in a row.

Saina’s family, friends and a large number of well-wishers and officials of the Andhra Pradesh Badminton Association (APBA) received her at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport.

As soon as the 20-year-old came out of the airport, her parents hugged her warmly. Her friends raised slogans of ‘Saina Saina’. Amid drum beats, Saina boarded an open-top flower-bedecked jeep.

All-India strike on July 5 to protest against the fuel price

New Delhi, June 29: The Left parties, AIADMK, Telugu Desam Party, Samajwadi Party, Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) and the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) Tuesday called for a countrywide dawn-to-dusk strike July 5 to protest against the fuel price hike.

The parties accused the Congress-led government of giving “another cruel blow” to the people by removing controls over petroleum pricing and rising the prices of petrol, diesel, kerosene oil and cooking gas.

US busts Russian spy ring; nabs ten

Washington, June 29: The US has arrested 10 individuals including eight “deep cover” agents on charges of spying for Russia; reminding the espionages episodes of the Cold War era.

The arrests were made on Sunday and Monday in Boston, New York, New Jersey and Virginia, the Department of Justice announced on Tuesday, alleging that the group dubbed the “Illegals” was tasked by the Russian intelligence agency SVR to enter the US, assume false identities and carry out espionage activities.

Girl set ablaze by boyfriend in UP

Pratapgarh, June 29: A Dalit girl was allegedly set ablaze by her boyfriend after she refused his marriage proposal in Jethwara area of the district, police said here on Tuesday.

Suman was set afire by Chand Babu when she was alone at her Nagaria Ramnagar village residence yesterday. The girl was admitted to a hospital, where she succumbed to injuries, they said.

The girl was having an affair with Babu. The boy yesterday asked her to marry him to which she refused. Agitated with the refusal, Babu poured kerosene oil on Suman and set her ablaze, they said.

Dehra Dun, June 29: A man, working as a bus conductor in Delhi, was arrested for allegedly attempting to rape an American national in Mussoorie near here, police today said.

Jewish flotilla to set sail for Gaza

Flotilla, June 29: A coalition of pro-Palestinian international Jewish organizations will dispatch an aid flotilla to the Gaza Strip in a fresh bid to break the inhumane Israeli-imposed blockade on the impoverished territory.

The “Jewish Boat to Gaza” is set to sail towards Gaza next month from an undisclosed location carrying humanitarian aid and passengers from Britain, Germany and the United States.

The coalition has said that at least one of passengers onboard the flotilla is a Holocaust survivor.

Militants kill Iraqi gen., bomb pipeline

Baghdad, June 29: Bomb blasts have killed three people, including a senior army officer, in Baghdad while militants have sabotaged a key oil pipeline north of the Iraqi capital.

The general, who police identified only by his first name Khodr, was killed on Tuesday in Aden Square in the shrine district of Kadhimain, also known as Kadhimiya, in northern Baghdad, AFP reported.

A second magnetic bomb killed one person and left two others wounded outside an army officers’ club in al-Hurriya in northwest Baghdad.

Hyderabad June 29 (Siasat News): An 18-year-old girl on Monday, succumbed to her injuries she suffered in a motorcycle accident at Towlichowki on June 25.

According to police, the girl Shagufta Shahwar and her boyfriend Abdul Bari were travelling on a motorcycle when the driver of an RTC bus, taking a U-turn at Towlichowki applied sudden brakes.

Violence continues in Kashmir

Srinagar, June 29: The Kashmir Valley continued to simmer Tuesday as violence spread to the southern region leaving one person injured in firing by security forces while curfew was clamped in many parts to quell angry protests over eight civilian killings.

Stone pelting mobs took to streets at many places in the summer capital Srinagar as protesters and police clashed in south Kashmir’s Anantnag and Pulwama districts.

One person identified as Arshad Ahmad was injured when security forces fired a rubber bullet to quell protests in Mattan Chowk of Anantnag, 56 km from here.

Israel evicts more Palestinian families

Jerusalem, June 29: Israeli authorities have handed eviction orders to several Palestinian families in the occupied West Bank, giving them a 24-hour deadline to evacuate their homes.

Ten families in the Jordan Valley received orders on Sunday to quit their houses, while the Palestinians say they have documents on their ownership of the land filed with Israel’s Land Registry, Ma’an news agency reported on Monday.

The families said they had received demolition orders before, but this was the first time they had been given a 24-hour notice.
