Nine swine flu deaths in a week in Kerala

New Delhi, June 22: Kerala continued to grapple with the spurt in swine flu deaths since the onset of monsoon this year with the coastal state reporting nine out of 13 deaths due to disease across the country in a week from June 15.

Maharashtra reported three deaths and Andhra Pradesh one during that time.

Kerala reported 117 swine flu cases, Maharashtra 28 and Karnataka 17, Union Health Ministry officials said.

With these cases, the swine flu death toll in Kerala since the monsoon hit the state has risen to 25.

Omar admits there’s problem in Srinagar

Srinagar, June 22: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today admitted there is law and order problem in parts of Srinagar but said the process of restoring peace is moving on.

“We are facing difficulties but the process of restoring peace and tranquility is moving on. The law and order problem in some parts of Srinagar city does not mean that the entire valley is disturbed”, Omar said speaking at a symposium on performance of legislators held here as a part of the 75th All India Presiding Officers Conference.

Tennis ace Sania’s singles campaign over at Wimbledon

London, June 22: Sania Mirza’s poor record at Grand Slams extended when she crashed out of the singles event of the Wimbledon championships with a first round defeat at the hands of Germany’ world number 55 Angelique Kerber.

The unseeded Indian lost her opening round 4-6 1-6 to her German rival, who set up a second round meeting with Israel’s 13th seed Shahar Peer.

Sania made a bright start by breaking Kerber in the first game of the match but was broken twice to surrender the first set. She was then outplayed in the second set, last night.

Dambulla, June 22: Farveez Maharoof’s five-for including a superb hat-trick helped Sri Lanka bowl India out for a below par 209 an inconsequential league match of Asia Cup on Tuesday.

New Delhi, June 22: Playing down reports that Nitish Kumar wants Narendra Modi and Varun Gandhi away from Bihar as a condition to continue with the alliance, the BJP on Tuesday claimed that no one has advised it over the issue.

Briefing reporters in the national capital, party spokesperson Shehnawaz Hussain said, “We have had no communication on the issue. BJP will decide who will campaign where. This is our issue, we have not asked for anybody’s advice.”

China floods leave 175 dead

Beijing, June 22: Chinese President Hu Jintao and Prime Minister Wen Jiabao Tuesday called for an ‘all out effort’ to combat floods which left nearly 175 people dead and thousands displaced in the country.

The heavy rain that has triggered floods and landslides have left 175 people dead and 107 missing by Monday, according to the flood control department of east China’s Jiangxi province.

Hu and Wen stressed that ensuring people’s safety was top priority and called on rescuers to work hard to control the flood.

‘British govt. can’t justify Afghan war’

London, June 22: Lindsey German from a London-based anti-war group says the rising fatalities in Afghanistan have made it difficult for Britain to justify its military’s involvement in the devastated country.

Foreign troops will not leave Afghanistan any time soon, the member of Stop the War Coalition told Media on Monday.

Britain is second to the United States in terms of war fatalities in Afghanistan. The British deaths have already hit 300.

S Korea dismisses report of N Korea’s nuclear test

Seoul, June 22: S Korea has dismissed the report that detection of radioactive xenon higher than average was related to a North Korean nuclear test last month.

“It is our position (the xenon) was not related to North Korea’s nuclear test,” foreign ministry spokesman Kim Young Sun told a press briefing yesterday.

The Chosun Ilbo cited a South Korean government source as saying there had been detection of eight times more xenon than average at a northeastern monitoring station in mid-May.

CM’s Telengana tour cancelled

Hyderabad, June 22: As the Election Commission of India has announced the schedule for the Assembly by-elections in Telangana districts to fill the casual vacancies and model code of conduct coming into force, the scheduled visit of the Chief Minister, Mr K Rosaiah, to Karimnagar and Warangal districts on June 24 and Nizamabad district on June 25 stands cancelled.

However, the Chief Minister will visit West Godavari and Srikakulam districts as per schedule on June 26 and 27, according to a pressnote from the Chief Minister’s Office.

Pak militancy nurtured due to Poor education system

Islamabad, June 22: A report by a Washington think tank has found that Pakistan’s poor public education system helps stoke militancy, while madrasas or religious schools often cited as a cause of extremism are not a major risk factor.

The Brookings Institution report to be released on Wednesday examined a raft of studies to assess links between militancy and education.

The researchers said that the public school system in Pakistan is highly corrupt with positions handed out for political favours and teachers being paid even if they don’t turn up for classes.

India’s first blood bank for dogs

Chennai, June 22: A blood bank for dogs! Yes, you read it right. Tamil Nadu University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences has opened a blood bank for dogs, the first of its kind in India.

The blood bank was opened two months ago and so far about 40 dogs have benefited from it.

Canine blood banks exist in European countries, Australia and the US, and having seen the usefulness of such blood banks in emergency, the University had been thinking on these lines for some time, says Dr Prathaban, Director of Clinics, Madras Veterinary College in Vepery.

Shahzad pleads guilty, warns of more attacks

New York, June 22: Pakistan-born American Faisal Shahzad, pleading guilty to all 10 charges in the failed Times Square bombing, has described himself as a ‘soldier’ in a war being waged by Muslims against Americans.

‘I want to plead guilty 100 times over,’ said Shahzad in a packed Manhattan federal court Monday after the 10-count indictment, including attempt to use a weapon of mass destruction and attempt to commit international terrorism, was read to him.

Four killed in Turkey blast

Istanbul, June 22: At least four people were killed when a roadside bomb hit a minibus carrying military personnel in Istanbul Tuesday, Turkish media reported.

The blast occurred as the minibus was passing a cemetery on its way from a military housing complex.

One of the victims was the 17-year-old daughter of an officer. At least nine people on the bus were injured in the blast.

Huseyin Avni Mutlu, the governor of Istanbul, said the bomb was detonated by remote control, according to the state-run Anatolian Agency.
