India, Canada to sign historic nuclear agreement

Toronto, June 23: India and Canada are set to sign a civil nuclear agreement that will allow New Delhi to secure uranium, nuclear equipment and technology to meet its energy needs during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit in Toronto for the upcoming G-20 Summit.

The four-day visit commences on June 26.

Canada will become the latest country with which India shall have civil nuclear deal since the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) allowed New Delhi to resume global nuclear trade in September 2008.

World Bank loan to help India battle natural disasters

Washington, June 23: The World Bank has approved a $255 million assistance to India to help mitigate the risks and vulnerability of people to natural disasters.

The first phase of India’s National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Programme is financed through a credit from the International Development Association (IDA), the World Bank’s concessionary lending arm, and has 35 years to maturity and a 10-year grace period. It is complemented with $64 million from the Indian government’s budget, the Bank announced Tuesday.

Man kills baby in standoff with New York troopers

New york, June 23: A man fatally shot a 3-month-old child in front of troopers during a standoff outside an upstate New York home today morning, then was shot and wounded by officers, state police said.

The man was outside the home in Blossvale, east of Syracuse and about 200 miles northwest of New York City, when troopers arrived after getting an emergency call about a domestic dispute, police said.

President asked to reject Guru’s mercy plea

New Delhi, June 23: The union home ministry has asked President Pratibha Patil’s office to reject parliament attack convict Afzal Guru’s mercy plea, informed sources said.

Guru is on the death row since 2002 for the 2001 parliament attack. His wife Tabassum filed a mercy petition with the Rashtrapati Bhavan four years ago.

The sources said the mercy petition was sent to the home ministry for its view and it returned the file last week, rejecting the plea because of the heinous nature of the crime.

Israel launches spy satellite targeting Iran

Tel Aviv, June 23: Israel launched its latest spy satellite as Tel Aviv, along with many other world governments, is wary of Iran’s nuclear programme and its “belligerence” toward the Jewish state, a newspaper said here Wednesay.

The satellite, dubbed Ofek 9, was launched on board a booster rocket Tuesday night from the Palmachim airbase, 10 km south of Tel Aviv, the Jerusalem Post said.

From its low Earth orbit at an altitude of around 600 km, the 300-kg satellite is to join its precursor Ofek 7.

Hot and humid conditions continue in Delhi

New Delhi, June 23: The city continued to sizzle under hot and humid conditions today with A maximum temperature of 44.3 degree Celsius, five notches above normal while the minimum temperature touched 32.6 degrees — the highest of the season.

The maximum was marginally higher than yesterday’s 44.1 degrees. The minimum temperature, which rose by 1.5 degrees from yesterday’s 31.1 degrees, was four degrees above normal for this time of the year.

Triplets Born to 66 Year Old Woman in India

New Delhi, June 23: A 66 year old woman in India gave birth to triplets on May 29 after 44 years of marriage to her 64 year old husband, with no children. She is most likely the oldest women to ever give birth the three babies at once.

The birth came after an in vetro fertilization process which involved a younger woman’s eggs and her husbands sperm. Bhateri Devi gave birth to two sons and a daughter thanks to the National Fertility Centre in Hisar India. The Centre has impregnated over a hundred women who were past 50 years old.

US judge lifts oil drilling moratorium

Washington, June 23: A US judge Tuesday lifted a government moratorium on offshore oil drilling that President Barack Obama put in place in response to the ongoing BP Plc spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Judge Martin Feldman of the US District Court in New Orleans granted a preliminary injunction against the moratorium, finding it overly broad and insufficiently justified.

The administration would appeal the ruling, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said.

Los Angeles, June 23: New York City, which has America’s highest population of 8,391,881, is the largest city in the US, followed by Los Angeles, latest official statistics said.

Los Angeles is the second-largest city in the US, with a population of 3,831,868, Xinhua reported citing estimates released by the US Census Bureau Tuesday.

Spanish parliament approves labour market reform

Madrid, June 23: The Spanish parliament Tuesday approved a controversial labour reform in a vote marked by the abstentions of most legislators.

The reform is meant to make Spain’s rigid labour market more flexible in an attempt to slash the country’s 20-percent unemployment rate and to restore market confidence in the sluggish economy.

The trade union confederations UGT and CCOO, however, said the reform increased the vulnerability of workers without improving productivity.

Football fans clash with police in Mexico City

Mexico City, June 23: A group of Mexican football fans who were celebrating the national team’s entry to the second round of the FIFA World Cup 2010, clashed with the police Tuesday.

Several people who caused disorder in the streets were detained, Xinhua reported.

Over 1,000 people went to the Independence Angel monument to celebrate Mexico’s entry to the second round, while some 100 policemen were guarding the monument.

Some of the fans caused disorder and robbed stores near the monument, local radio station Formato 21 said in a report.

Honduras declares emergency due to dengue

Tegucigalpa, June 23: Honduras has declared a state of national emergency due to proliferation of dengue, which has already caused 10 deaths and over 11,000 infections across the country.

An emergency cabinet meeting agreed to establish an inter-institutional commission, coordinated by the health secretariat, which will develop a plan to combat the epidemic, Prensa Latina reported.

Mexico City, June 23: Plastic bottles, dead livestock and other wastes are used to build houses for poor as part of a climate conservation campaign in Latin America.

Glass and plastic bottles mixed with honey and sand can be turned into a decent accommodation. Such dwellings are called “ecological houses” because they are made of natural elements that cause no damage to the environment, said Ingrid Vaca Diez, a Bolivian environmentalist.

India-US CEOs suggest $10 billion infrastructure fund for India

Washington, June 23: With US President Barack Obama’s India visit in November offering an opportunity to intensify their economic engagement, captains of industry have suggested creation of a $10 billion debt fund for development of infrastructure in India.

Among other “interesting and ambitious ideas” recommended by the India-US CEOs’ Forum Tuesday were “collaboration under the National Solar Mission of India, a long term initiative on diabetes research and treatment, linkages between educational institutions and joint research in clean energy, including bio-fuels.”

Boeing requests more inspections after cracks in wing pylons

New York, June 23: Boeing has said it will recommend more frequent inspections of its long-range 767 aircraft after American Airlines found cracks in the pylons holding the engines onto the wings on two airplanes.

Boeing was working with American Airlines to resolve the problems and in contact with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on the issue, the aircraft manufacturer said Tuesday in response to a query.

Boeing cannot force any airlines to inspect their aircraft more often. But recommendations from manufacturers generally are adopted into airline guidelines.

US asks India to address ‘longstanding impediments’ to trade

Washington, June 23: The United States has asked India to address what it called “longstanding impediments” like investment caps, agricultural market access barriers and high tariffs as they work on accelerating their bilateral economic relationship.

US Trade Representative Ron Kirk also listed “intellectual property rights, and the need for continuing regulatory streamlining and transparency” among the impediments at a meeting Tuesday with Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma, according to an official US readout.

Gangster gunned down in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow, June 23: A gangster wanted in over 20 criminal cases was gunned down early Wednesday in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur district even as his two aides escaped, police said.

Radhey Harijan, 34, who carried a reward of Rs.50,000 for his capture, was shot dead by the police in Bankathiya village, some 250 km from Lucknow.

“He had over 20 criminal cases, including murder, abduction and other heinous crimes, pending against him in Uttar Pradesh,” Inspector Rahul Singh told reporters in Ghazipur.

Panaji, June 23: Controversial Goa Education Minister and unattached legislator Atanasio Monserrate’s entry into the Congress has triggered sharp reactions from both within the party and the opposition.

An unattached legislator from the United Goans Democratic Party (UGDP), Monserrate faces charges ranging from extortion, assault, arson and other serious crimes, including inciting a mob to attack the Panaji police station in 2008. He also allegedly led an assault on Youth Congress members in his constituency 2007.
