Shiv Sena slams government’s minority policy

Mumbai, June 23: The Shiv Sena Wednesday denounced the central government’s efforts to provide more government jobs to minorities, saying it amounted to an “Islamisation” of India.

In a scathing editorial in its mouthpiece Saamna, the Sena said that there had been a large increase in the number of government jobs given to Muslims.

Basing its argument on figures released by the central government, it said that more and more Muslims were being employed in railways and public sector banks.

Economic ties with India creates jobs in US: Clinton

Washington, June 23: The US has said enhancing economic ties with India will create thousands of jobs for Americans, as against the general impression about the US jobs being outsourced to the South Asian country.

Addressing a luncheon meeting of the Indo-US CEO Forum, the US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton said, “Just last week Congressman Jim McDermott unveiled a report by the India-US World Affairs Institute showing that Indian investment in the US grew by an estimated 60 per cent in 2009, to over USD 7 billion.”

Israel’s secret prison wing sparks uproar

Jerusalem, June 23: A recent revelation about a mysterious prisoner held in total seclusion from the outside world in a top secret Israeli jail has put Tel Aviv at the center of a new round of controversy.

The issue was initially raised after a report by Israeli news website Ynet disclosed the existence of the “Mr. X” in a maximum-security detention center where the man’s identity is even being kept from his guards.

‘Hacker blackmailed women into making porn’

California, June 23: A CALIFORNIA man has been charged after he allegedly hacked into more than 100 computers to look for sexually explicit photos that he then used to blackmail his victims into handing over homemade sex tapes.

Luis Mijangos, 31, was charged with extortion after he allegedly infected more than 100 computers with a virus disguised as a popular song download, which allowed him to take over the personal computers used by about 230 people, including 44 children, myFOXla.com reports.

Hacker who got Meghna Naidu ‘pregnant’!

Mumbai, June 23: Actress Meghna Naidu complained to the Cyber Crime Investigation Cell in Mumbai this week, about a hacker who got her pregnant.

Unknown to the actress, a hacker had breached her Gmail account a few weeks ago and was chatting away with her friends, falsely claiming that Meghna was pregnant from a fling with a guy whose name she couldnt remember and that she needed advice. How imaginative!

But when this impersonator said hello to the actresses ex-publicist Dale Bhagwagar on the chat, the PR specialist sensed something fishy about the way Meghna was chatting.

BCCI to appoint new member to disciplinary committee

New Delhi, June 23: N Srinivasan, the BCCI secretary, has said a new member would be appointed to the disciplinary committee since Shashank Manohar had recused himself following Lalit Modi’s repeated requests for the same.

The original panel comprised Chirayu Amin and Arun Jaitley, both members of the IPL governing council, along with Manohar. Incidentally Manohar, in a letter marked to Srinivasan on June 19, stepped down, saying that he would like to give Modi a “fair” trial during the enquiry.

Hyderabad, June 23 (Siasat News): An incident of gang rape took place in the jurisdiction of Miyapur police station where a married woman was abducted by the miscreants and kept her in a room where they repeatedly raped her.

This incident though came in the limelight with a slight delay, created panic in Miyapur. Police Miyapur has started the investigations following the complaint of the husband of the victim.

62,000 badly veiled warned

Tehran, June 23: Iranian police have issued warnings to 62,000 women who were ‘badly veiled’ in the Shiite holy province of Qom as part of a crackdown on dress and behaviour, The Telegraph reported.

Colonel Mehdi Khorasani, the provincial police chief, said police had also confiscated around 100 cars for carrying improperly dressed women and said that “encouraging such relaxations are among the objectives of the enemy.”
The population of Qom is more than one million, with most of them concentrated in the city itself which is Shiite Iran’s clerical nerve-centre.

‘Dirty’ water makes 20 ill in Narayanguda

Hyderabad, June 23: Suspected leaks of drainage lines into pipelines supplying drinking water have landed at least 20 people, including children, from the Gandhi Kuteer locality near Narayanguda, in hospital, in the last 15 days with complaints of vomiting and loose motions.

Local residents have been complaining that a foul smell emanates from the drinking water supplied through a pipeline by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board. The health minister, Mr Danam Nagender, visited the area and gave an assurance that leaking pipelines would be replaced at the earliest.

Mumbai, June 23: His act was brave. But unfortunately, it was not fruitful. Juhu resident Mehtab Ansari made a daring effort to nab a chain snatcher on Tuesday morning. After a long bike chase, when Ansari had nearly caught the thief, the latter shot at him and fled.

Naked woman leads US officers on chase

Utah, June 23: A woman was undergoing a mental evaluation on Tuesday after police say she stole two vehicles, including a police cruiser, and led officers on a chase through two Salt Lake City suburbs – all while naked.

Police Capt. Tom McLachlan said doctors do not believe drugs or alcohol led to the woman’s erratic behavior, which also included running through sagebrush.

The chase finally ended when she was subdued with a stun gun after climbing a chain-link fence. “It appears there may be mental issues involved,” McLachlan said.

4 US-led forces killed in Afghanistan

Kabul, June 23: Four NATO soldiers including two Americans have been killed in southern Afghanistan, bringing to 14 the number to have died in two days in the war-torn country.

Two US-led soldiers were killed in bomb attacks in separate places, another foreign soldier in a firefight and the fourth in a militant attack, AFP reported quoting a NATO statement.

The latest deaths occurred on Tuesday and brought to 69 the number of US-led troops to have been killed so far this month, with 43 of them American.

Dutch national found dead in hostel

New Delhi, June 23: A 51-year-old Dutch national was found dead in a tourist hostel in the city this morning, police said. The deceased identified as Albertis Gritargan had checked into the YMCA hostel on June 11.

After taking his breakfast on Monday, he had locked the door from inside, putting a ”do not disturb” board. He did not open the door for next two days.

His naked body was discovered this morning after staff of the hostel informed police that a foul smell was emanating from the room. When police broke open the door, Gritargan was found dead in the room.

Faisal Shahzad received USD 5K from a co- conspirator

Boston, June 23: Pakistani-American terror suspect Faisal Shahzad, who has pleaded guilty to planting a bomb in Times Square, had received USD 5,000 in Massachusetts from a co-conspirator who he believed worked with the Pakistani Taliban, prosecutors said.

“On or about February 25, 2010, Shahzad received approximately USD 5,000 in cash in Massachusetts sent from a co-conspirator not named as a defendant herein who Shahzad understood worked for Tehrik-e-Taliban,” according to an indictment filed last week.

Literary works find new space on small screen

New Delhi, June 23: Remember “Wagle Ki Duniya”, “Bharat Ek Khoj”, “Hasratein” and other such fascinating television serials. All these were based on literary works and, after a long gap, Indian television is again witnessing serials based on stories by noted Hindi as well as regional writers.

Sensex opens 120 points lower on weak global cues

Mumbai, June 23: The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex opened lower by 120 points today as investors sold stocks amid a weakening global trend.

The 30-share index, which lost 126.86 points in the previous session, fell further by 120.50 points, or 0.67 per cent, to 17,629.19 points in the first five minutes of trading.

Similarly, the wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty declined by 11.65 points, or 0.22 per cent, to 5,304.90 points at the same time.

Rupee opens flat against dollar

Mumbai, June 23: The rupee today strengthened marginally to 46.21 against the U.S. currency in early trade as the dollar remained steady in overseas markets.

At the Interbank Foreign Exchange market, the domestic unit gained 3 paise to 46.21 a dollar. The rupee had closed 49 paise lower at 46.24\25 a dollar in the previous trading session.

Dealers said the rupee moved in a thin range as local equities fell in early trade, while the US dollar traded steady against the major world currencies.

Some month-end dollar demand from importers also restricted the rupee movement, they said.

BJP fails to decide on alliance with JD(U) in Bihar

New Delhi, June 23: “The party president heard the views of the Bihar unit leaders seriously and has taken the decision that he will present their views to the Central leaders,” spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said.

BJP tonight failed to reach a decision on the fate of its troubled alliance with JD(U) in Bihar but indicated it favoured continuance of ties with its old ally without compromising on self-respect.

‘Angry’ Obama recalls Afghan commander to Washington

Washington, June 23: The top NATO commander in Afghanistan was immediately summoned to Washington Tuesday after a magazine article portrayed him as dismissive of senior US officials for their concerns about the ongoing war effort.

General Stanley McChrystal will meet US President Barack Obama Wednesday to explain “what in the world he was thinking”, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said, leaving open whether the commander might be relieved of his duties after that meeting.
